A Casualty Of War

Cantonus had many faults. He was paranoid, cruel, and deeply ambitious. But he did have his merits -- that's undeniable. He had been a loyal servant of the Crown, never sharing his family's aspirations for a 'free' Kaedrin. Starting his service to King Olivier as a mere baron, Cantonus worked quietly and diligently for numerous years. Over time, he proved himself worthy of a County under the newly formed Kaedrin, eventually acquiring the position of Magnate and getting to work rebuilding his family's legacy. Yet, such efforts were short lasted as mutiny sprung up among the ranks of the Order of the Hallowed Flame. The betrayal of those whom he once considered close confidants had driven him to madness. Those who remained loyal to him quickly found that Cantonus had lost any touch of reality, remaining hidden away within the inner recesses of Castle Wett.

The recent days had been long and deadly quiet since the recent insurrection. A cool breeze emitted through the crevices of the keep walls, making its way to the men within. Speculation swarmed the minds of his order-men, the general consensus being that Cantonus appeared to be awaiting something, some sort of opportunity. Whatever their Lord's thoughts were, they would be lost to the world. Despite the steadfast soldiers that stood by him, a blade had found itself to Cantonus' heart. His grand plans for the future of Kaedrin were something that very few could genuinely envision. None of this rescued him from a quick death at the hands of an assassin within the walls of his own keep.

Cantonus Chivay, Magnate of Kaedrin and loyalist to the Orenic Crown, had been killed.

"WHAT?" Darius exclaims upon hearing the news...

"Damn! The Adrian dog has more to grasp onto...." He'd trace a lorraine cross upon his chest, lowering his head in respect.

Kochek falls to his knees upon hearing the news "Yet another lord lost to the wind..." He mumbles, before gathering his bag, wrapping himself up in a warm cloak and heading for a colder, lonelier place away from grief.

Richard soon hears of the chatter among the death of Cantonus Chivay. He would kick his feet up on his desk before talking to Danis, "What a sad and mournful day for the Savoyards who would of thought his death would come so soon." Gives off a slight chuckle and grin before returning back to his workspace

Franz slightly frowns at the event. "Quite an interesting turn of events to say the least.."

Many miles away, high on a tower jutting from keep of Raethcrown, a Harrenite stands. The wind is violent on the tower, a flag flaps like a trout fighting for its life. Snowflakes leave stinging impressions on his skin, biting at his cheeks. His face is lit by a torch in his hands, its flame clinging on for dear life in the treacherous wind.

After a particularly violent gust passes by, the flame is extinguished. The Harrenite stands in the darkness. "All flames die down eventually, all flames diminish. All flames fail." The Adunians of Hiraeth rest better each night after hearing of the death of Cantonus Chivay of the Order of the Hallowed Flame.

"Oh ****!" says Guile de Sola.
