1160 A.D

The Muslim, Christian, and Pagan realms of Europe, North Africa, and the Near East are about to plunge into a series of bloody conflicts. A grand story that will write history… in blood.

=+= In The Near East

The position of Sunni Caliph is weakening in power, he lost control over the vast Abbasid Caliphate after it was shattered by decadence revolts following the formation of the crusader state of Jerusalem. Each Muslim (Sunni) is on high tensions, waiting for their chance to grab the title of Caliph and crown themselves leader of the Faith of Islam.

=+= The Byzantine Empire and Anatolia

The Greeks, or true Romans by their own account, have lost a large swath of land to the Seljuk Horde. Many of these conquering horse lords have settled into the Sultanate of Rum, swearing allegiance to one ruler. Will the newly solidified nation turn its sights south to expansion into the Muslim World? Or will it attempt to forge a new Muslim Empire in the West and push forth against the Byzantines? Will the Greeks form an offensive to retake their lost lands? Or will they forge a steadfast defense in the east and turn their sights to their slavic neighbors?

=+= The Holy Roman Empire

Neither holy, nor roman, nor an empire, the Holy Roman Empire is made up of a loose confederation of feudal German and Italian lords. In the center of Germany, Fredrick Barbarossa claims the title of Holy Roman Emperor. However his claim is weak and many lords reject his rule or have plots to claim the throne for themselves? Can the confederation join under one true liege as a Empire? Or will the states forge a massive alliance to expand the sphere of German influence and divide land amongst themselves?

=+= The Lands of France

The western lords of France have been stolen by England, in an uneasy deal, the feudal lords of the West now owe their allegiance to the King of England. The French Monarchy has made a joke of itself in the past years, but will it be able to turn around its decline and reunify France?

=+= The Melting Pot of the Western World: Iberia

A bloody conflict has erupted as the Kingdom of Asturias shatters. Four Kings; Léon, Castille, Portugal, and Aragon will inevitably clash to unify the Christian states of Iberia. The large Almohad Sultanate shows no notion of northward advance, instead it is focused on the turmoil of the former Abbasid Caliphate. However, there is a state ready to enter the conflict. The Mardanisid Sheik looks to the feuding Christian states and sees opportunity. Will he rally his armies for a frontal assault? Perhaps he will use diplomacy and gain an ally with one of the kings and support their claim?

=+= The British Isles

Scotland has been freed from Nordic influence, but there are still outlying holdouts for the Kingdom of Norge's british invasion. While the Scottish finish throwing the Norse from their homeland, they also brew a jealousy for England's power and its interference with continental politics. In Ireland, four tribal kings fight for control of the hills, the king of Meath claims High Kingship over all of Ireland... and this has caused some tension. England's native  lords are becoming angry that their King is focusing much of their resources and soldiers on holding French lands, but the crown seems focused on expanding the nation's influence. Will the King of England be able to convince his lords to his nationalistic view? Will the four kings of Ireland topple this 5th 'High King' or will they try to grab the throne for themselves? Is Scotland finally at peace... or will it turn its sights to the rest of the Isles?

=+= The Republics

Three major Italian city states wage a war of gold and ships, trying to gain control of the waves. Genoa has founded a new trading port in Crimea, opening the Black Sea to their coffers. In the far north the Boyars of Novogrod have forged a republic, will they turn their own sights to the ocean and form a republic to rival the Italians?

=+= Italian Peninsula

The northern Italian lords have sworn into the massive pact of the HRE, however to their south an ambitious Sicily has unified a piece of the peninsula. Will the northern lords turn their attention South? To swear under Sicily and make a unified Italy... or to forge their own alliance and defend against this new ambitious King.

=+= Scandinavia and the Baltic

The kingdoms of Sweden and Norge have become bitter rivals. Dispute over the lands of the mountain borders and over trade rights have caused the nations to close trade routes with each other. While the two superpowers fume, the Finnish and norse tribes mobilize for war with each other. Kola and Kemi have entered an alliance known as the Fino-Pact, in defense from the merchants of Novgorod and the hostile norse tribes. Will the two Kingdoms of Sweden and Norge clash in a bloody conflict? Will the Finnish tribes hold off the pagan norse raiders?

1160, Summer

The fields are all empty, the harvest having been taken in. Peasants across the land are content. For almost every nation, the harvest has been bountiful. Sadly that is not the case everywhere. In English held France for instance, the harvest has gone rather poor. It was saved, but villages will still starve. Norway is also experiencing a poor harvest. In Norway, the nobility calls for expansion. If purely for resources, they know they must fight for survival in the north.

In the Byzantine Empire, Muslim rebels primarily in the Anatolia province are clamoring for secession. They have already occupied several government buildings in the cities itself. In the countryside it is more hostile, but loyalties are highly mixed. It'll be up to the Romans to see what they can do.

In Swabia, the Roman Emperor holds a precarious grip. Sure their best ally, Lombardy, will staunchly support them. But it may not be enough, as both north and south Bavaria are looking on Swabia with greed. Things in Germany are turing into an armed camp fast......

Genoa's colony in Crimea is a lucrative business indeed. However they are under a constant threat of expulsion. Hordes of nomads are happy to trade for now, but one wrong move and it can turn to war.

Sweden is the rising power in the Baltic. They move at an even pace, forming strong alliances with several Nordic tribes, ensuring the north is secure.

Norégveldi - THE KINGDOM OF NORWAY

den-norske-love-3.png

Nidaros, Norway.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwWwFAO1new

A grand feast is held by King Haakon Herdebrei in Nidaros. Jarls, hersirs and chieftains try to speak about the poor harvest, but are resorting to shouting as the loud singing soldiers and kinsmen are having the time of their lives.
The lords of Norway all agree, the fishermen are to be gifted bigger and better ships in an attempt to feed as many as possible. ((MOD needed for the effiency of the fishery investment))

"So be it, I want you all to lend a fourth of your fleet to your smallfolk, those of you without access to the sea may very well prepare the wagons to transport mackerels and trouts to your villages."
-King Håkon "Herdebrei" Sigurdson of Norway's command.

Interest in the tribes of Northern Sweden is also discussed amongst the dukes afterwards...

Þingvellir, Iceland.

During the Thing, a foolhardy man wanders into the circle, informing the lords and smallfolk of Iceland about his biggest adventure yet.

"Så vær hilset, my friends! I am sorry to say that I have grown tired of the boring old Island and that I long for the sea. I have saved up enough penings to buy a ship in Reykjavik, but I need a crew to join me! You may wonder where I am headed... Well.. Seat yourselves, lads! We will be journeying to Vinland to meet Leif Eriksson's sons and daughters! Who is with me?"
 -Ask "The Mad" Sturlasson

((MOD needed for the outcome of the madman's recruitment drive))

The rest of the realm is doing fine as per usual with no events of note.

The Most Serene Republic of Venice

A time of great prosperity was upon the Republic of Venice, controlling much of the trade throughout the Eastern Mediterranean Ocean. Newly elected Doge Orsino Orsini whom was elected unexpectedly with the Orsini family only recently setting up a cadet branch of their House in the Serene Republic.

sensa-05.jpg

After a recent meeting with an ambassador of the Roman Empire it was agreed that five thousand soldiers of the Venetian Army would travel to Constantinople to then be placed under the command of the Romans, while one hundred ships of the Venetian Navy (Not trade fleet) would travel to the City of Sinope and engage a blockade on behalf of the Romans whom are paying the Venetians a considerable amount of coin to assist.

%7Boption%7Dhttp://media-1.web.britannica.com/eb-media/22/94822-004-E6EF83B3.jpg

The Doge could see that the Republic required more land on the Italian Mainland, they would look to sow dissent amongst the HRE Vassals in Italy, spread thoughts of Independence from the Germans to the Italian Lords underneath the boot of the HRE. They would do so with discretion through the use of many Italian courtiers that had little to no connection to the main Venetian Government using promises and intrigue to convince them to do so. (( Mod approval ))

The Orsini Family of Venice with their new found power decide to split off from the main Italian Branch, using much of their wealth to invest in existing Venetian Banks and buy shares in their ownership. Orsino begins plans to take over at least one of the major banks in Venice. (( Mod approval ))

The Reign of the last Doge saw the Venetian Arsenal out of use for a long period of time leading to the decline of the Venetian Navy to just four hundred military vessels. Doge Orsino Orsini commanded immediately that the shipwrights get to work building Galleys and looking into making new designs for heavier ships so the Navy could become well balanced. (( Mod approval ))

Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων - The Roman Empire

Viking_ByzantineThroneRoom_01_LR.jpg

Manuel sat amidst the Chrysotriklinos, dozens of advisers and key military advisers gathered as two Varangians flanked the throne. "Autokrator," rasped out John Vatatzes, cladden in the regal murex purple donned by the Imperial Komnenoi and the trademark klivanion lamellar worn by officers and kataphraktoi alike. "An insurrection has taken hold in our easternmost themata of Paphalagonia, Boukellarion and what remains of Anatolikon - namely within Gangra, Ancyra and Amorion. Mousoulmánoi, from what reports our strategoi have dispatched."

The Emperor drew in a sharp breath, before he lofted a hand to cup his chin. "We are truly cursed, if we have Toúrkoi rising from the earth. My father, and my grandfather - in their reconquest of Anatólia, did they not drive the non-believers - those unfaithful to Christ; the Toúrkoi, from our lands? From where has this revolt arisen, Domestikos? I recognize not these Mousoulmánoi as my subjects."

"Seltzoúko̱i, my Autokrator. It is my firm belief that they sent these heathens to undermine our efforts towards the restoration of our blessed Basileía Rhōmaíōn." The Megas Domestikos bowed from the waist, prompting Emperor Manuel to rise from his throne. "Domestikos, I entrust you with raising armies from the Themata Optimatoi, Opsikion, Boukellarion, Thrakesion and Samos. Mandatōr, send word to Ambassador Maheras. We will require Venetian support for the upcoming campaigns. And also, dispatch an envoy to Armenian Cicillia. It is due time they pay homage."

He offered a wave in dismissal to his chief general, before he turned to address both his Prōtostratōr and the megas doux. "Kamytzes, you shall ensure that two units of kataphraktoi are deployed with my Varangian Guard when we depart from Konstantinoúpolis - and in addition, the Vardariotai. Kontostephanos, you shall prepare the fleet at Krete and sail to Kypros to ensure that naval superiority is maintained within the Levant. You are dismissed."  He waved a hand, promptly before he sank back onto the throne. The advisers dispersed, and so plans were set in motion.

Summary:

- Matters of the rebellion in Anatolia are addressed.

- The Megas Domestikos sends word to the Straegoi of Optimatoi, Opsikion, Boukellarion, Thrakesion and Samos to raise their respective forces and march north to Nikomedeia. (Mod Approval)

- Word is sent to the Ambassador in Venice, who in turn meets with the Serene Doge to reaffirm treaties and come to agreement.

The doors adorning the far end of the Serene Doge's hall creak open, pulled asunder by a duo of guards cladden in plate-mail. Anastasios Maheras curtly made his entrance, garbed in rich silks and velvet. The Roman ambassador was known within the Republic for his grandiose style, renowned and hated for both his excessive vanity and pride. He came to stand before the throne of the Serene Doge, bowing his head in a slight gesture of respect.

The Serene Doge of the Republic of Venice would nod his head to the Roman Ambassador, gesturing to his scribe to pen down the minutes of the meeting between Venice and Rome. He’d begin to speak “Benvignuo, Ambassador of Rome. What can I, the Serene Doge of Venice do for the Roman Empire’s Ambassador today?”

Anastasios lilted his chin skyward, clasping his hands before him. “My Basileus has sent me in order to reaffirm the treaties that stand between Venetía and Basileía Rhōmaíōn. The easternmost themata of the Basileía have come under the threat of mousoulmánoi rebels endorsed by the Seltzoúko̱i which linger ever present upon our borders. My Basileus wishes to ensure that the Most Serene Republic upholds her promises prior to patrol our waters, but also now also to fight alongside us so that we may stave off the menace of Idolatry that holds Kappadokia and Mesopotamia in a vice grip.”

Orsino Orsini would shift on his throne, leaning forward “The Most Serene Republic of Venice has vested interest in keeping those waters safe from Saracen forces. Much of Christendom is under threat. The Moors in Hispania threaten the Christian Kingdoms, the Sultanate of Rum threaten the Romans and of course Jerusalem could be taken if proper action is not taken. We Venetians do like our coin, but the Muslims and their leaders would see that taken away. We will uphold our pledge.”

“My Basileus will expect to see Venetian forces within Anatolia following the season. My final request, also, is that Venetian galleys are dispatched to blockade Sinope and Amisos.” He drawls out, before offering another light incline of his head.

“How many would he see in Anatolia? The Venetian Army is well rested, we’ve a few battalions of our renown heavy infantry and archers ready.” the Doge would inquire

“As many as may be spared, and God help us when the steel of Christians and Toúrkoi clash upon the field of battle. With luck, we will drive them from our lands and see the west firmly in the hands of Christendom once again.”

“We’ll spare two thousand, seven hundred and fifty of which will be archers, the rest are infantry. I will send one of our finest Captains to lead them. We lack cavalry however, we will rely on your own army to support them with Cavalry. We will want to be paid of course for the use of our forces.” the Doge would add

“Then we are in agreeance. Dispatch your forces to Nikomedeia, and we shall ensure they are grouped alongside our forces when the campaign begins. My Basileus will expect Sinope to be blockaded by the turn of the month. Antío, and may Christ lead us all to victory over the menace out of the east.” Maheras would turn sharp upon his heel, meandering out of the hall to report the dealings to Constantinople.

“Scribe, pen orders for two thousand soldiers of the Venetian Army to be prepared to travel to Constantinople, they will be accompanied by two hundred ships from the Venetian Navy, ensure the Admiral knows to move the fleet onwards past the great city to place blockade on Sinope. There will be no resistance in the Black Sea.” the Scribe would nod

- An envoy is dispatched to Cicillia, requesting that the fledgling Kingdom pledge their banners in vassalage to the Roman Empire and assist in upcoming campaigns. (Mod Approval)

- The Megas Doux is sent back to Krete to prepare the Imperial Navy

-The mobilization of two units of kataphraktoi are issued, as well as the Varangian guard and the Magyar Vardariotai, in preparation for the march from Constantinople and to the war front. (Mod Approval)

The Sultanate of Rum

The Sultan, Giyath, paces the grounds of his palace quietly in thought. He nods to himself, looking as Ghanem, one of his closest advisors, approaches him with labored steps. Ghanem stands before the Sultan a moment in silence, before opening his mouth just slightly. The Sultan raises his hand to silence the man.

"I know what must be done," he mutters. " Send spies into the cities of Anatolia they hold, seek for weaknesses or movements of their soldiery, and anything else of interest. If they find opportunity, sow dissent as best they can. Send an emissary unto Jerusalem, as well as Mosul. Seek to establish trade agreements with the nations, so that we may pour the wealth of the Far East into Europe, and reap the rewards. If Jerusalem deflects our offers, make it known to them that our muslim brothers are prepared to descend on them, and we shall assist in culling their advances diplomatically if they agree. Inform our emissarries to Mosul and Abbasid of this plan.

Ghanem nods, rushing off to do the Sultan's bidding, only for the Sultan's other advisor, Suleiman to approach him from the other side.

(Mod needed for trade agreements with NPC nations/Spy success)

"Sultan, the ambassadors from Almohad and the Caliphate have agreed to our trade proposals, though Almohad is far and we can not expect it to be easy to trade with them till we have ports on the mediterranean."

The Sultan nods, and responds with his command.

"Begin to rally the levies here in Konya. Send word 'cross Rum, we will take Cicillia."
(Mod approval)

"Additionally, begin trade with the Genoan outposts 'cross the Black  Sea post-haste, and with the trade ships send an emissary to establish a trade agreement. Additionally, in exchange for defending the Genoans from the hordes they trade with should they grow malcontent, request that they focus any of their piracy upon the Byzantines, lest the Empire seek to claim Anatolia wholly for their own."

Kingdom of Jerusalem

King Baldwin III had ruled over the Crusader State of Jerusalem for 17 years now. He had seen his way through the Second Holy Crusade, as well as a civil war to see Jerusalem where it is now. He had defeated Nur ad-Din and conquered Harim from Antioch.

He impatiently tapped his fingers on the armrest of his throne, protected by Knights Templar and professional soldiers of the Kingdom. Before him were seated his Marshal, Seneschal, Chamberlain, Butler, and Chancellor. His Constable however, was running late. Just then, a guard opened the doors to the throne room, and in walked the Constable, Lord Humphrey II of Toron.

“A thousand pardons, your grace.” He’d say, bowing low before Baldwin.

A wave of his hand would send the lord to his seat, where he quickly situated himself, and nodded to the other officers and lords in the room.

With everyone in attendance, Baldwin would begin;

“My lords, as most of you know, our recent victory over Nur ad-Din has expanded our borders, and earned us a temporary peace with the Muslims.” He’d turn to his Marshal now, his face carrying a blank expression. “Ensure that the people of Harim know that I am a kind, and benevolent ruler. Furthermore, ensure that careful watches are held at the Eastern and Southern borders of the Kingdom. I want to know if the Seljuks try anything.” ((Mod needed to see if Marshal successfully improves relations with the people of Harim))

“Now,” he’d start, turning to face the Constable, “Lord Humphrey, you will travel to Byzantium. I charge you to request a royal marriage as well as a military alliance between our two nations. You are dismissed.” ((Mod needed to see if Humphrey reaches successfully))

In a swift motion, the Constable would rise, bow, and exit the throne room. Rising from his throne, Baldwin would address his remaining officers. “Conduct a feast, hold a mass, do whatever, spend however much is necessary, make certain that the people of the Kingdom are happy.”

Summary/Important Events:

- Careful watches ordered on the borders.

- Emissary sent to Byzantines for military alliance as well as royal marriage between King Baldwin and Theodora Komnene, niece of Emperor Manuel.

THE ABBASIDS

36338f78292037c8207ef763c7c0f0eb.png

Adorned in an immaculate white garb, Caliph Al-Mustanjid sat tall among his council. Not a season ago it had been his fortieth birthday, and whilst the weight of age burdened the Caliph, his countenance was abound with vigor. Six years of fighting and insurrection had commenced with Baghdad's independence and the shattering of the Seljuk polities. It was only three years ago when the Siege of Baghdad had ended in the Caliph's favor; a meager seven-thousand Bedouin swords against a horde of thirty-thousand Turkish screamers. Whilst outnumbered heavily, the ingenuity of the Naffatun, masters of fire, in the defense of the city was invaluable and all lauded the Caliph's choice in their deployment. But the Caliph could not relish nor lounge in his victories for he was neither a cruel nor idle man.

5fd271585298ac4aaefb84ad05981ad9.png

What was known of the Caliph was of his tenacity in battle and diplomatic nature. He was arrogant and blunt, but backed his words with action; few could dispute Al-Mustanjid's ability as a skilled commander, especially after his victory over the Turks. Well-loved by the people and gifted of tongues, the Caliph had few vices of note aside from the most base, lust, a longing for many wives and slaves of all castes and creeds within his harem. The decades of war against rival Muslim polities denied the Caliph a chance to wed again after his first wife, and in his war camps, he oft forgot the call of Shaytan as he looked upon the washerwomen and camp followers. His understanding of the Quran was also noticeably lacking, for he did not enjoy the time nor peace to study it rigorously as befit a Caliph. While noble in intent and largely in virtue, the Caliph was oft bested in matters of Islamic learning and law, a fact that would infuriate his proud nature upon reminder.

But among the councils, he was the Caliph and Emir of Baghdad, the wealthiest city in the Muslim world. His lands prospered under the loving cares of the Tigris and Euphrates and the recent peace had insured a prosperous state ready to expand his influence. He had summon his council at the crack of dawn and all were in attendance aside the Grand Vizier.

30a65e7834be3f6f83b98ac8573f6932.png

Sitting to the Caliph's right was Amir Zahir of Al-Nadjaf, the virulent zealot whose ability in combat was bested by none among the Caliphate and renowned soldier of Islam. A native Berber, he was compelled to fight for Baghdad in defending the Sayidi Caliph after a religious epiphany and whose valor was recognized with a chief office as commander of the armies of Baghdad. Aside him, Wali Idris managed the court's finances, timorous and even effeminate in manners, but a wizard with gold and matters monetary. To the Caliph's left was the leader of the Naffatun, the ominous Ali whose dealings with the underbelly of Baghdad enabled him to provide excellent intelligence and defense of the Caliph against internal threats. And aside Ali was Imam Hafiz, a product of Baghdad's circles of learning. A master of Greek medicine and Islamic studies, he counterbalanced the Caliph's weak knowledge on matters faith and law and was regarded as the favorite among the council. And the Vizier himself, who would sit opposite to Al-Mustanjid...

"Where is the Vizier?" barked Al-Mustanjid.

"From what I saw last, my Caliph, he was resting amongst the gardens. I shook him awake and reminded him of our council, but he  said he would come his own time." replied Ali.

"Wallahi,   I must speak to our prince;  he does not follow the Sunnah with this idle actions." muttered Imam Hifaz.

"No matter.  He will hear of our plan later to restore what is our Caliphs then.  The tribes of Atef have suffered of drought whilst Baghdad has been kept fertile by her mother rivers.  They are weak, and the key to restoring Mecca and Medina in the hands of their rightful protectors."

A silence stilled the council. The prospects of war were expected, but this soon? It was Ali who broke it with question.

"A war with the Atef? Amir Zahir, we may best them in battle, but the Bedouin tribes know the desert better than us. We cannot hold to keep them our fealty, not with our current strength."

"We won't. Imam Hifaz has learned where your fire-flingers have not. The tribes respect Baghdad after her defense against the Turk, and they will always respect Baghdad for his Sayiddi Caliph. If we show them strength in the field, they will bend their banners to us as their tradition. From there, we  may proceed to Mecca and Med-"

"Sabahul Kahiyr!"

9046b4c8e88e9e190b037810e32d83bb.png

The doors of the council swung forward as the Grand Vizier, Al-Mustadi ibn Mustanjid swaggered in. Lax, lazy, quick to anger and bearing a penchant of cruelty, it was a miracle that Al-Mustadi bore any love among the denizens of Baghdad. He was the Caliph's only son, spoiled as a youth, rearing the child to be obnoxious and contemptible. Yet his confident and uncaring nature gave him an aura of confidence that made him loved among the Iraqi nobility. Al-Mustadi was quick in wit and able in matters diplomacy. His understanding of Quran was well enough to appease the religious whilst his ability as a skilled statesmen won over the less zealous. He fulfilled the duty of Vizier well, though with little respect for the office, and this had been the third time that the Vizier had arrived late to council, a first in Baghdad's history.

The Caliph's eyes bulged out of his head as he could not manager to temper his wrath. "You will leave at once."

"What? Where? I've just arrived?" retorted the Prince.

"To Hajj. If you cannot be prompt to my council, you will be prompt to Allah's own, and mayhaps do some good for your peoples instead of lounging about all day spinning lies." spat out the Caliph.

"What would have you me do?" muttered the Prince, an etch of shame awash over his face.

"The Hashimids of Mecca and Medina have toiled under the Shia yolk for long. You shall go there, and tell them of the Caliphate's rise to power, and their obligations to the Sunni faith. "

49b27f3a32eaaf00ff5a4ac4a35bf731.png

"I'll sweeten those words father, for you'll find few friends with that rhetoric. As you will, Subhanallah."

The Caliph grunted in response before turning to his Council.

"Amir, raise the armies of Baghdad to meet the Atef tribes; Idris, you will be trusted to lord over Baghdad in my departure, as  Ali and Hafiz come with me to act diplomat and bodyguard. Give ledgers of our finances by nightfall, so we may plan our campaign accordingly."

With that, the Caliph rose "We shan't chatter any longer, we've all our duties. Ma'a as-salaam."

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Thusly, emissaries were sent from Baghdad across the Muslim world, alerting them of the vitality of the Caliphate and a religious message of the Caliph himself; that any acts of aggression by the Greeks against a Muslim state will be met with armed struggle, Jihad. Whether Turk or Bedouin, Berber or Andalusian, the ummah would defend another. The rhetoric was rife in Arabic scholarship, and any man who knew the Caliph would know that this was not by his own hand, but of the wizened Imam Hafiz. All the same, it was the Caliph's intention, and an ominous notice to the Byzantines.

A personal missive is sent to the Almohads and Sultanate of Rum. To the former, it dictated a readiness to establish a navy given the Christian dominance of the Mediterranean and request for a marriage. To Rum, it forbade them from striking Byzantium, ushering them to let the Christians come first as so the Caliph had the moral authority to declare all of Islam in Rum's defense.

The black banners stood tall, but not from the battlements of Baghdad, but by camps south by the land of Atef. The Caliph himself rode out, displaying his grand army to the tribes of Atef. His terms were simple; heeding the Caliphate as their suzerain lord, and abiding by its law. Aside him were the Imam Hafiz and Naffaten Ali, whilst Zahir stood aside the grand armies of Baghdad. The parley was to begin.

OOC:

The Abbasids send their Grand Vizier to the Sunni Hashimid Emirate to coax them to rebel from the Shia overlords after Atef is conquered, to establish a Caliphate state from Mecca to the Persian gulf. They also request a bride for either the Caliph or the prince. [MOD needed]

The Abbasids raise their armies and march south in a show of force to establish the Atef as a tributary vassal. [MOD needed]

The Abbasids receive a count of their finances. [MOD needed]

The Abbasids send a missive to all Muslim nations that any acts of aggression by Christians will be met with a universal defense. News of this will trickle to Mediterranean Christian states.

The Abbasids send a missive to the Almohads, giving them instruction of the importance of a naval presence and a marriage between the Caliph and one of the Berber Sultan's daughters.

The Abbasids send a missive to Rum, forbidding them from aggression against the Byzantines.

The Almohad Sultanate

Marrakech, North Africa, The Realm of the Almohads

_________________

The Sultan Muhammad flexed his wrists, before him was his massive city, sprawling out for great lengths. Students crossed the streets into universities while music and chatter drifted from the square. As the shouts of haggling merchants mingled with the sounds of prayer, Muhammad nodded to himself. "Yes, the time is almost upon us." He murmured to his advisors, "Our great Caliph is in need of our backing. His dynasty was thrown back by the blade of the infidels and shattered upon the shield of his own realm. It will be my, our, chance to bring this great realm to its peak. There are others who seek power however, the Fatimids are solidifying their Sultanate on the Nile and the Seljuks of Rum are under threat of Byzantine invasion. We will have to act quickly, for soon our Faith will fall to the bickering that is seen across the sea in the realms of the crucified god." His Court Imam nodded eagerly, "You are he who will restore our Faith to power and unite it against Christendom and the pagan hordes. You are the second Mahdi, the redeemer." All nodded in agreement, "Subhan Allah," he spoke. "Subhan Allah," they echoed.  Outside, far from the balcony of the palace, a large retinue made its way through the gates. As the grand doors slammed shut, a courier ran inside. "An emissary from the Caliph has arrived."

______________________________

Muhummad stroked his chin, "The Caliph wishes for my daughter to join him in marriage." He thought for a few moments, "I will consent."

d1133fdb619dc5bbce8de3e67c1e27c0.png

The emisary nodded, "There are other things..." he explained. The council leaned in closer and murmured their disagreements and consent to the plans of the Caliph. As the messenger finished speaking, the council erupted into anarchy. "Silence!" The Sultan shouted, "We will rally the armies in Tunis and prepare to move out from there. With our armies in position to meet up with the armies of the Abbasids, we can be prepared for any threat upon the Sunni realm."

______________________________

In the dark of night, in the lands of the Algiers, a massive camp has been erected. Grand flames shoot into the sky and the chatter of soldiers float into the desert air. The Sultan threw the flaps of his tent open, a horn sounded in the distance and the banner of the Emir of Algeria flew high as his army thundered into the camp. His realm was rallying, soon the entire army would be assembled. However, the Emirs of Iberia are charged with the defense of Andalusia, to be sure no Christian armies strayed across the borders.

On the docks of Gibraltar the son of the Sultan sits with merchants from Genoa. They are talking of opening more trade as well as possible conscription of the Genoese navy for future conflicts. Meanwhile the stewards of the realm order the construction of shipyards in every major port in an attempt to prepare a strong naval force for the realm.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE

2000px-Arms_of_the_Kingdom_of_France_(An

France had been experiencing great turbulence over the past few years with the English gains in the west. Over half the country had been taken by the invaders, and things looked dismal.

As representatives of the remaining nobility in Paris tried to advise the King on what to do, things began to look even more dismal as permanent peace treaty negotiations went poorly with the English. King Louis the VII had been content to entertain the notion of marrying his daughter off to Henry the Younger, and had even betrothed her to him 2 years before, but he was not content with the prospect of forking over the Duchy of Toulouse to the English King. This was unacceptable for the French loyalists, and for the King himself.

Unless the English extended a far better offer of peace to the French monarchy, the treaty that had been in the works for almost two years now would not be signed. And the worst would have to be expected...

Heralds meanwhile deliver messages to the peasants all across France, spreading wild rumors of severe barbarism committed by English soldiers in the past. They warn of unchristianly methods of torture, the bodily mutilation of men, women, and children alike, agricultural ruin following them in their wake, and extreme bloodlust! They also warn of the complete and utter destruction of the Franks and of France itself should the English catch them off guard. The heralds then urge male peasants of fighting age to enlist in their local levies, and to help defend France and their King should the English attack.

The King and his lords begin the process of preparing to rally their levies and their knights, fearing the worst as they prepare to defend France from a possible English invasion of Toulouse.

Meanwhile, as per their previous marital bonds, the strong alliance between Castile and France is reaffirmed, even as the funeral of Constance of Castile, Queen of France, is underway. Much of France mourns the passing of Constance, who was much loved within the land... News of the Almohad Sultanate's raising of an army also slowly spreads to France, and although not of immediate threat to France, the monarchy intends to keep a close eye on the situation in the south.

Ambassadors are also sent to the court of the Holy Roman Emperor, intending to discuss a possible alliance between the two realms (Or possibly even between France and Swabia itself), and to the merchant republic of Genoa to discuss the signing of a trade agreement. ((Discussions shall take place in RP PMs.))

An observing ambassador is also sent to the court of the Irish King of Leinster.

The abundant harvest is well-celebrated in Eastern France, and many praises to God are sung. It was no coincidence that Western France had done so poorly, and Eastern France had done so well! The House of Capet was truly ordained by God to rule the realm! A number of churches are refurbished to celebrate this great blessing.

((If I forgot anything, I'll address it tomorrow in a new post, since editing is unreliable. :/))

The Kingdom of Connacht

http://www.williammarshalstore.com/751-large_default/connaught-coat-of-arms-shirt.jpg

The Gaelic spirit was no stronger anywhere than in Connacht. A region of rolling hills, rocky coasts and lush, green plains. It was a sparsely populated region.

Saxon influence had never truly reached this far west. Gaelige as a mother tongue was still dominant, and most of Connacht's residents lived in small hamlets of fishing and farming. The exception being Galway, a bustling town built along the river Corrib, where merchants laid their wares and farmers came to sell their harvest.

Galway was a town that only existed by the effort and dedication of Tairrdelbach Ua Conchobair, King of Connacht. It was from here the aging king ruled.

Conchobair sat in court with a procession peasant and noble folk alike in front of him. His son Ruardri standing at his side, an imposing man with a mane of red hair, a true warrior. Fearsome in contrast to his father.

"We've grain to last us the winter, harvests are bountiful, my liege."

"Clans across the Gaeltacht pay tribute to their king."

Connacht was stable, but Tairrdelbach had his sights set on expansion.

[Mod Approval Required]: Tairrdelbach whispered to his son. The younger celtic warrior rose up and addressed the procession of nobles in Galway's court.

"Fertile lands an' plenty game lie south. Galway grows an' our harvests reap well, it is time to expand. Send riders 'round to all the villages and clans. Tell them that a silver piece, two goats an' ten bushels of wheat await any who wish to settle the southern plains o' Dal Cais an' Limerick.

Tell them what they pay back to the crown in tribute will nay be but a fraction of the bounty that awaits them."

The nobles nodded and soon word spread across Connacht. The king urged his people to begin migrating south, to spread his influence.

Malcolm looked onto his lands, great pastures laid ahead, great for sheep herding. A royal decree is passed through the lands, the sigil of Clan Dùn Chailleann is stamped in every paper. Landowners are rewarded to raise good quality wool, be the reward monetary or more lands. A scottish emissary is sent to Venice to start to sell the Scottish wool.

Bells rang across the city of Stirling as a royal wedding ensued, King Malcolm had wed the Sassenach King’s sister. A 3 day feast ensued where even the peasantry feasted. But while the feast ensued the King sent messages to the Ulster counties, Uli Neil, Oriel and Ulidia, saying that if they payed vassalage to the King as Clans, they get all the benefits of Scottish Clans, and utmost protection from any foreign aggression. Frederick I "Barbarossa" Hohenstaufen, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Germany, Italy, and Burgundy, and Duke of Swabia

LzUV9Wm.jpg?1

The situation, both long-term and short-term, in the Empire troubled Frederick I greatly. Only 40 years earlier one of his predecessors, Henry IV, had come to blows with Pope Gregory VII in the Investiture Controversy, and had damaged the status and power of the Holy Roman Emperor over his church, and by extension as a whole. Frederick had to resolve this, and so he set about doing so.

Only a few months prior, the Roland of Siena had been chosen as the successor to Adrian IV as Pope and had taken the name Alexander III. However, many of the Cardinals, and Frederick himself, had been backing the priest Octavian. Frederick had installed Octavian as Antipope, who promptly took the name Victor IV, and had so far enjoyed the support of almost every one of the catholic kings of Europe, excluding the Iberian Kingdoms and Sicily. However, the situation was going nowhere and already support for the Antipope was beginning to wane. It was likely that the Antipope would not succeed, but that did not mean that Frederick could not still play the situation to his advantage.

A diplomat is dispatched to Rome, carrying a letter for Alexander III.

"To His Holiness Alexander III, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop of Rome, Sovereign of the Papal States, and Servant of the Servants of God,

It is to His Imperial Majesty's great dismay that there has been conflict between the Emperor and the Papacy. Back in the times of His Imperial Majesty Charles I The Great and His Holiness Pope Leo III these two offices were seen as inseparable, intertwined by the grace of God Himself. It is deeply saddening to see that over the centuries this relationship has deteriorated into what is often a bitter and cold stand-off. The Emperor of the Romans and the Bishop of Rome should not be enemies, it is not the way of true way of things.

Not five years ago did His Imperial Majesty subdue the traitorous forces of the Commune of Rome who attempted to wrest control of the seat of the Papacy from His Holiness Adrian IV, and then go onto to further subdue a riot in Rome. His Imperial Majesty fully wishes for the institution of the Papacy to prosper and maintain its status within Christendom, sees no reason why the same assistance He gave to His Holiness Adrian IV should not be offered to his most esteemed predecessor.

It is therefore the goal of His Imperial Majesty to set about repairing these relations, and moving towards making the relationship between Pope and Emperor co-operative for the good of Christendom, rather than competitive for the good of either's power and ego. In order to attempt to do this, His Imperial Majesty Frederick I will personally come to Rome and declare His recognition of His Holiness Alexander III as the one true Vicar of God and Bishop of Rome, and to denounce the Cardinal-Priest Octavian as an impostor and a danger to the Ecclesiarchy, and will do all in His power to see to it that the other Catholic rulers of Europe do the same, especially in the instance of His imperial subjects.

In exchange for this, His Imperial Majesty hopes that His Holiness will return unto Him A) the prerogative of presence, B) the prerogative of resolution of disputes, and C) the prerogative of investiture by the sceptre in episcopal elections in His Kingdoms of Burgundy and Italy. These were vital rights afforded to the Emperor in the past, and have been taken away as a result of a massive misunderstanding between our predecessors many decades ago, a misunderstanding that no longer exists between ourselves and will hopefully be forgotten in the name of the future of Christendom in Europe, and a long-lasting partnership between His Holiness and His Imperial Majesty.

Yours in Faith and forever,

His Imperial Majesty Frederick I Hohenstaufen, First of His name, Emperor of the Romans, King of Germany, King of Italy, and King of Burgundy, and Duke of Swabia"

((MOD REQUIRED))

Frederick did dearly hope that the Pope would see the sense in his words. With matters of the church addressed, Frederick sought to solve matters of the Empire. The two main threats to his rule were Southern Bavaria, or the Duchy of Austria and Northern Bavaria, or the Duchy of Saxony, and so they were to be the main considerations when deciding upon allies.

An offer of alliance is submitted to the Kingdom of Denmark's King, Valdemar I, who had stabilised and rebuilt the country after a series of brutal civil wars. They would prove useful against the Saxons, and were quickly becoming an emergent trade and military power in northern Europe. ((MOD REQUIRED))

Another offer of alliance is also sent to the Duke Henry of Laach of Lower Lorraine. They were both an elector and a relatively powerful prince within the Empire, and it was important to maintain good relations with them in order to keep a hold over the Empire and to defend against any internal threats. ((MOD REQUIRED))

The French ambassadors are accepted with open arms, and talks begin between them and Frederick.

The-Envoy-Of-Pope-Alexander-III-1105-81-

In a somewhat more aggressive manoeuvre, a letter is sent to Genoa and given to Doge Fortuanto:

"To the Serene Doge Ezio Fortuanto of Genova and Liguria,

His Imperial Majesty sees the prosperity and proliferation of Genova, and is truly taken aback. To go from a single merchant port to an influential trade power that spans the Mediterranean in a mere 100 years is a truly astounding achievement, and does credit the Doges of the fair city of Genova, including yourself.

It is for this reason that His Imperial Majesty would like to extend His protection over the Serene Republic. There are many out there who would seek to put an end to the beauty of Genova out of envy or greed. To name a few, the Almohands, the Sicilians, the Venetians and Pisans, and even the Aragonese. Almost all of them look across the seas of the Mediterranean and behold the majesty of Genova, and wish to have it for themselves.

Therefore, His Imperial Majesty formally offers an invitation of induction into the Holy Roman Empire, with the Serene Doge being offered the special title of Erhabenprinz, or Illustrious Prince, and Genova and Liguria being an Imperial State, affording it special rights and privileges that most do not have. Most importantly, however, is the protection of the Emperor, the Empire and His Imperial Majesty's allies both within and without the Empire.

In exchange for this, His Imperial Majesty would require a tax on the Genoese trade and production profits of 25%, and also to be allowed the use of Genoese shipwrights and drydocks should He require such a service. The former is of course negotiable, but as He sees it, this is a generous offer for the things He offers in return, which is an effective immunity to any foreign aggression and threat, and more, which will allow your Serene Republic to concentrate on prosperity rather than protection.

Yours most sincerely,

His Imperial Majesty Frederick I Hohenstaufen, First of His name, Emperor of the Romans, King of Germany, King of Italy, and King of Burgundy, and Duke of Swabia"

A similar letter is sent to the Pisan Doge, though with terminology replaced to suit Pisan interests rather than Genoan. ((MOD REQUIRED))

A great many missionaries are dispatched to the north-east of the Empire to try and consolidate Catholicism's presence in the region. Some elements of paganism remain, and a show of religious force from the Emperor could help build relations with the local ecclesiarchy and the Pope. ((MOD REQUIRED))

The Duchy of Swabia

%7Boption%7Dhttp://i.imgur.com/XyPdA8F.png?1

Within Frederick's own realm, there were a few matters he wanted addressed.

Firstly, a greater number of vineyards are ordered to be constructed. The vineyards of Blaubeuren Abbey that had been gifted to them had so far been quite successful in producing quality vintage, and more importantly, generating revenue. They seemed like a good investment to Frederick, and could put a bit more coin in his coffers.

mediterranean-vineyard.jpg

Frederick had also noted the building of the so-called "Universities" in Bologna and Oxford. They were places where learned and famed scholars could both share ideas, and pass them onto to the youth, propagating learning, research and culture. Though Bologna was in the Holy Roman Empire, Frederick's own realm did not possess one. Seeking to build Swabia up as a centre for German culture that would increase his influence and prestige, the construction of a university in Stuttgart, chosen as it was one of the largest cities in Swabia, is begun. Scholars, theologians, and natural philosophers from across the Empire are invited to come and be a part of the University.

Norway

King Haakon's plan was indeed met with a great round of applause. However some nobles did not wish to lend their ships for no profit. Some did not want to feed the small folk from their pockets as it's soon put. Discontent began to rise, some lords mumbling. They are a minority and not a threat however as most Norwegian lords on the coast try to help. Soon fishing fleets are pulling in decent catches, feeding the coastal lands. Another problem presents itself however, transporting the fish. The road and logistic situation makes it hard to feed the inner provinces. Fishing is a beginning however....

People are skeptical to follow Sturluasson on his mad expedition. Small folk are not eager to leave their land for an uncertain horizon. Many youths, mercenaries, vagabonds, and criminals soon however make their presence known. These men could be recruited if chosen. If so work would begin to plan and prepare the expedition.

Venice

The various Italian states tied to the Holy Roman Empire did agree with the various courtiers. They valued independence, and for the most part had it. They however enjoyed the protection it could potentially provide. The states are content to stay in their present station, as long as it proves lucrative. More radical lords however beg to differ. Some trouble begins to brew, for now mutters in the dark.

Though things seem to be bearing fruit in Italy, Venice itself faces a domestic problem. The rich merchants of the Republic enjoy a degree of power. Their Doge trying to infringe on a business ill suit them. They did not want him and his family controlling too much of the wealth of power.  For now taking a bank would ferment trouble. More ships begin to be produced.

Byzantines

Two thousand levies are raised from each of the provinces called upon. It will take time to form, but they are doing so in at a good pace. The rebellion is known to be small, a minority stirring trouble up. Cicillia is not willing to pledge to the Byzantines under vassalage. However they agree something must be done and offer to raise their own contingent. Determined to defend hearth and home, five thousand troops begin to muster. The elite troops are mustered efficiently in Constantinople. They are almost ready to move, but it will require a costly bill.

Rum

Spies begin to slip into Byzantine cities. However they find it hard to establish a reliable information network. It's hard to get word out and back across the border. However the reports that get through indicate hints of Byzantine troops being raised but nothing more. The spies intending to sow dissent find little to do. The rebel minorities are in the country and still small. Mosul accepts a trade agreement. Levies directly raised in Konya begin, and word will spread to all parts to muster. Almost twenty thousand levies could be expected.

Jerusalem

The people of Harim are discontent but not rebellious, so far. They are willing to listen to these promises of benevolence. Words speak louder then deeds however, as muslims wait to see what will come of it. Humphrey successfully reaches Byzantium.

Abbasids

The Sunni's respect that the Caliph's own son came to inspire them. They however dislike his character, though he charms them. A grand movement however is unobtainable, as anything would start in patch works. Most would not wish to break the peace with blood. Not without good cause, or proof. Proof such as if the Abbasids could take Atef.

The Abbasids begin to raise ten thousand levies. They cannot march yet however as it will take time to gather them. They could chose to keep raising their levies, to further increase their numbers. The wealth of the kingdom is well put. However large amounts of levies or a war could hurt the coffers.

Alba

The Irish chiefs barely accept the title of an Irish king, let alone a high king. Unless a large threat presented itself, Vassalage wouldn't be considered.

Holy Roman Empire

Kingdom of Aragon

Queen Petronilla sat on her throne. The crown on her head would proudly stand resolute upon her brown locks for the last time, and as she stood, her hands went for the adornment, where her son, grown and a man if ever there was, stood awaiting his inheritance. The ceremony was finished, and by the end, a new King named; Alfonso II of the House of Barcelona. The first monarch of his house.

However, the heir, Ramon - who had been renamed to Alfonso in favour of his Aragonese lineage - is too young to rule. Petronilla's husband and Alfonso's father, Ramon, the Duke of Barcelona, ascends to Lord-Regent.

The future of Aragon is rife with uncertainty. However, to seal their future and protection, as well as their attendance in any future crusades, the Duke of Barcelona extends an offer of betrothal between Prince Alfonso and Princess Sancha to Castille, the King's infant daughter.

And with that, the Old Duke had yet a conqueror's mind. He would be the first to take the initiative against the Moors, and would prepare for another crusade against the Mardasanids. Sending word to the Lords of the land, the levies would be raised and ordered to gather at Barcelona, the Kingdom's new Capital. (DM Attention)

Deus Vult!

Actions;

  • Declare war on the Mardasanids.
  • Send betrothal offer to Castille. Prince Alfonso to Princess Sancha.
  • Abdication of Queen Petronilla. Duke of Barcelona becomes Lord-Regent, and the Prince Alfonso Heir-Apparent.
