Annabelle sat under the shade of the swaying branches of a tree in the cool autumn air. The sun shone just bright enough to break through the branches, kissing her cheeks with a hint of warmth. A small wooden table and two chairs were set up, and a delicate lace tablecloth had been carefully placed. Atop the table sat a gorgeous tea set, intricately decorated with bright flowers and gilded edges. The teapot sat with warm, sweet, fragrant rose tea, accompanied by a small carafe of cream and a tiny pot of sugar. A small tray of sweet delicacies lay untouched to the side.

Across from Annabelle sat her dearest friend, her sole confidant, and her sister in law, the widow to her late father, and mother to her half brother. Emelie’s golden blonde hair framed a face of delicate features, a stark contrast to Annabelle’s raven haired, sharp eyed expression. The two young women sat with odd smiles on their faces, each with a teacup in their fingers. They were enjoying the conversation, the breeze, and the view. Sided all around by fields of golden wheat, backdropped by clear blue waters and verdant green trees, their day in the countryside of Lorraine couldn’t be more peaceful.

Annabelle’s small, gentle hands set her cup down gently into the porcelain saucer. Nimble fingers found their way to a tiny glass vial, tucked between the tea set. Within it, a liquid of pale blue color, only a few drops in the bottle. Her hand would move to grip the tiny stopper, plucking it gently out. Gracefully, she would tip it over her cup of rose tea, allowing two quick drops to fall into the warm drink. She would move her hand over Emelie’s cup, within full view of her friend. Wordlessly, she would repeat her actions, the vial emptying into her friend’s cup with the last two drops.

Setting the vial down softly onto the table, Annabelle would take her cup up once more, bringing it close to her lips. Looking over to her, Emelie would mimic her actions. The two young noblewomen would stare across the table at each other for a long moment, before bringing their cups to their lips, taking a long sip in unison. They set the cups back down onto the table, a soft clink as they touch down onto their saucers echoing through the fields around them. Gentle, somber smiles would reflect back at each other. After a few passing moments, Annabelle’s eyes would close, losing sight of her friend.

Falling backwards.. no.. falling upwards? Her body was moving, she thought. Her world was black, there was no light, no moon, no stars. She felt no wind on her face, but she knew she was moving. How did she know? She wasn’t sure of that part. Suddenly there was a rush, of wind and light and water and everything that made up the universe as she knew it. She opened her eyes then, not having realized they were closed, and she could see everything she needed to see.

It was with somber thoughts that the former queen of Oren sat with her dearest friend for tea. It had been only a day since she had said goodbye to her darling little boy. She set him on a ship with the two nurses still loyal to her, showering his little face with kisses - nose, eyelids, lips, cheeks, forehead, ears, chin, brows, and the crown of his head, where his raven-colored curls tickled her face. She whispered over and over as his pudgy hands reached for her, “Mama loves you, Ferdinand… Mama loves you…” Tearfully, she let him go and walked away, his wails reaching her ears as he was carried on board, never to be seen again. She did not - could not - look back. If she had she would have gone with him. Instead, her heart went with him - but she knew deep down it was for the best.

She would have been a terrible mother. She was an even worse queen.

A day later, she had her golden curls piled on her head, and she donned her finest gown - the last remnant from her brief reign as queen. She sat across from Annabelle, not a word passing between them. They had discussed earlier what they wished to do. Perhaps it was selfish, but living with the holes they had in their hearts was unbearable. They made sure their remaining families would be able to carry on without them, and that was all they could do.

Emelie de Bar lifted her teacup to her lips and drank deep of the draught of death.

She sat and she stared at Annabelle across the table, lids fluttering every now and again. In her mind’s eye, she thought of all those whom she had touched in life - every face seemed to flash by in an instant - her father Titus, William Bradfyre, her uncle Xavier, her son Ferdinand, her brother Augustus, and last but not least, Guy.

The golden-haired lady born of House de Sola and matron of House de Bar looked one last time upon her friend, whose eyes had closed forever to the world, before laying her head back in her chair to look at the sky one last time, her long ivory neck exposed. The breeze brushed against her cheeks, and she smiled as the sky grew dark and her own eyes closed to the world.

Although not witnessing the death of her mother herself, it's not long until Adelaide stumbles upon the whispering of the maids. At the sight of her, they quickly hush, but it was too late. Running as fast as her little feet can take her, Adelaide escapes to a hidden nook somewhere in the keep, mind numb and eyes dull.
