What is communication?

 

That's certainly one question that's been circulating the minds of many over the past twenty-four hours. Well, by pure definition we’ve got the following; “the imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium”. However this purest definition hardly describes the need for it, nor the time is needs to be used.. Where it is relevant? Well, obviously everywhere.. or, is it?

 

Let’s look at the recent situation for example and clarify a few things that happened, and haven’t been explained to their full potential. Around twelve hours before the event ensued with the YouTuber in question we were told about this opportunity. Twelve hours. That isn’t a lot of time and we needed a decision, at the time I wasn’t present personally (infact I wouldn’t really be made aware till around six hours beforehand) but those present at the time decided to act on this cost-free opportunity to bring some attention to our server. Was this ideal? No, not in any sense. Ideally we’d like to have done further research and had a strategic plan before going forward. However unfortunately that luxury of time just wasn’t available to us. So there we had it, a significant YouTuber turning up within twelve hours. Freema stayed up all night, wrote a script and pulled off an event so perfectly it makes me proud to call him a member of the GM team. 

 

Yet, how does this fit into the greater theme of ‘communication’? Well, going full disclosure communication is poor. It has been for a while. This isn’t just relevant  between the community/staff barrier but even the internal workings of the many teams we have, up to the level of admin itself. Even now facts are becoming revealed we were not aware of, made by the decision of others. Fixing this crucial element to an online community is a much more momentous task than you’d think; it’s so much more than just making posts and is reliant upon the openness of a vast and expansive staff team that just often fails to be. Is it possible to fix? Most certainly, however veteran players will know this isn’t a new issue. It's a recurring one that even those labelled as the best admins, or GM’s have been unable to fix entirely.

 

Nevertheless. We can make a start, or.. another start. However many times this is a start for. I’ve lost count. Money. The cursed substance that threatens the balance of just about everything in life, including that of LotC. I mean.. at the end of the day, we require money to run do we not? Before you throw up within arms about how LotC is struggling to keep running costs up. That isn’t the case. However what also isn’t the case about Tythus only being money hoarding owner who cares little for this community, because quite simply it isn’t true. Without him the community wouldn’t exist within the first place and even to this date excess funds go straight back into the server. Before any of this kicked off we planned on storing away the excess for a much larger investment to buy a physical server and rack space on top of such, even this ‘minor’ project would take us till November at the very least on current rates. It isn’t as dire as you may think, and from my perspective and knowledge this is how it is. 

 

I just felt at this time, that was the impression and I needed to offer my opinion which for the most part is reinforced by evidence. But going back to the original point, when does something gather the need to become public knowledge? Its an often complicated situation due to the complexity and unusualness of how our community operates. In an ideal world we’d be free to inform you of everything and anything, however that simply isn’t the case. Sometimes things have to be withheld for all sorts of reasons, or perhaps simply because we’re under strict time constraints and simply don't have it to give. Nevertheless this does not excuse certain actions of the past in any sense, and I’m certainly not looking for forgiveness due to them.. because half the time, we’re in the wrong anyways.

 

So this is just sort of a rather oddly formatted conglomerate of a post to explain.. something, to the members of our community. 

At the very least, it's an apology.

PS: I’m aware of the needed explanation regarding a certain figure as of late, however at this time I don’t believe myself informed enough to come to any sort of conclusion. It will require much further discussion and I shall get a post to you with an answer as soon as possible.

Nothing is worse than silence. This simple post goes a long way.

 

Honestly; the most important part of communication with the player base is to build trust and keep people from freaking out. When people feel like they aren't being listened or responded to, they get afraid and feel the need to take drastic action so that their voice can be heard.

Yknow if you need money for buying **** it's possible to inform the server.

 

And ask us.

 

Rather than go crazy and jump at the chance for money from a mad crazy suspicious guy. But I know thay isn't your fault: this is more for the people who still have not really commented yet.

 

While this doesn't explain much, it's a start. Honestly the youtube thing isn't anyone's concern anymore.
