Introduction

 

The people of Raev have a very distinctive accent that can often make them hard to understand, some words are most important however. This text will approach the Raevir language in a way any speaker of the ‘common tongue’ may understand.

 

On the Raevir tongue

 

While Classical Raevir dwindles as a language spoken, it lives on through a pidgin dialect known as “botched Raevir” or “botch”. A mingling of the Renati common tongue with the complex Classical Raevir grammatic structure and lexicon, botch Raevir is mutually intelligible with Common but classified as a dialect by Oren, and by some an entirely different language.

 

Generally, the more educated someone is, the lighter the Raevir is in their speech. For example, a peasant may follow each and every rule, while a highborn born in Oren may only say his Da’s and Niet’s. (( It is up to you and your characters backstory of how much of the language you wish to take in, and very few Raevirs actually use all of the grammar rules and all of the vocabulary. Unlike Orcish or Kha dialects, it is up to the player to pick and use words as he sees fit. ))

Grammar rules

 

• There is no articles in bastard Raevir, meaning the words a, an, and the are dropped from speech.

(Ex: “I would like apple please”)

• The verb “make” is sporadically preceded before verbs. It is variable, and up to your preference, often occurring before verbs that end in -ing.

(Ex: “I will make killing of you!”; “You should make dance with her.”)

• The word “it” is sometimes dropped from speech.

(Ex: “Is good time to run!”)

• Generally grammar inconsistencies are throughout bastard Raevir. The original tongue’s grammar is so complex that constant errors arise when translating to common.

(Ex: “Borikdan cannot into water…”; “Something of wrong, friend?”)

 

(( Aside from these changes, your character would generally speak common english. This varies on the character though, but avoid the generic medieval slang of ye” or thou which doesn’t fit the Slavic pidgin dialect/accent. ))

I really like it, but I wish that it was just a tiny bit less Russian, as in not using direct translated Russian words (Da, niet, tsar, etc). Out is fantastic, though
