Sign language confusion

I want to make a character with their tongue cut off. How would I use sign language?

Use emotes! A mute character can still express himself with body language and his ability to write.

I'm not even sure Sign language is established in role play. You could go through the pain staking process of emoting each fingers position to a bunch of people who don't understand but I wouldn't recommend it.

Sign language should be acceptable - but of course only between those, who actually know sign language.

But making mute character only so that you can easily speak in just another way (i.e. writing as fast, as others talk) is kinda lame...
