The Marvels of "Redstone"

Red-stone, a common substance utilized to power appliances and machines, is a dusty mineral found within the deeper depths of the earth in the form of compacted, ore-like chunks. Once broken from it's stone prison, the shattered pieces of the red-stone ore are able to be collected and then later smashed up into a fine dust to properly utilize it's capabilities. Dwarves commonly use the substance for their in-numerous creations and the mineral has proven useful in Alchemy and the progression of Science in the realms of Aegis and beyond.

While the mineral is common, knowledge of why it holds it's properties is not. There has been little to no explanation on why it is capable of conducting energy, once shaped into stable wire; and this is purely because of the fact that the wrong people have been studying it's intricacies for the time it's existed as one of man's many useful tools.

Contrary to popular belief, Red-stone and it's mineralistic structure are purely based on arcane origins. Much like the 'Golden Pools' that had been created by collections of Mages' Gold around subterranean pools of water, Red-stones are minerals that have been warped by the effects of magical energy over a large period of time. Being so close to the "floor" of the earth, the Void had expelled energy up and into the softer stone above the Bedrock, tainting the lower-layers of the earth with pockets of sporadic mana, which, overtime, had developed into the peculiar crimson-hued substance that is commonly found to this very day.

Because of the diverse nature of Red-stone, it is able to be shifted into several forms and still retain it's conductive properties. Many examples include Red-stone wiring, blocks of hardened Red-stone (which acts as a continuous power-source once properly "fueled") and appliances and extensions to the Red-stone "tool-set" that allow the capabilities of the mineral to expand even moreso; a prime example being devices called "retrievers."

Properties of Redstone

Due to redstone’s origins as compressed mana it has. First off, Not only does redstone need to be digested or directly injected into the bloodstream to take effect but it takes a much higher dosage than thanhium to be fatal. Redstone also does not emit the same consistent draining of heat as thanhium does.

redstone dust is a very strong oxidizing agent. This trait stems from redstone dust being a compressed form of mana and so when put into a fire it will erupt into flames breaking the tight bonds between the mana, releasing an immense amount of energy. Throwing about a handful of redstone dust into a fire will see it gain ~100 degrees Fahrenheit in a matter of seconds.

Thirdly, redstone dust interacts strangely with water. When water comes into contact with redstone dust the dust will clump up into a thick gel. When in this gel form the redstone dust becomes about two times more potent of an oxidizing agent than its dry form. Turning redstone dust from this gel back into its base dust form can prove to be quite a difficult task as one must boil the water off it.

Lastly, redstone dust has the ability to be hardened into a solid form and be used in smithing.

Hardened Redstone

To make hardened redstone requires the melting of the dust and then rapid cooling of the dust. The melting point of redstone dust is roughly 5500 degrees Fahrenheit, roughly the same temperature as it takes to melt carbarum. Once melted the liquid must be poured into its mold and then rapidly cooled through some means. If not cooled quickly enough the liquid redstone will not harden properly and revert back to its dust form.

Hardened redstone is similar to ferrum in its strength and durability, but lacks the ability to refine an edge capable of piercing even leather armour. Hardened redstone is also much lighter than ferrum while also emitting a constant and dull glow around it. If it were to come into contact with redstone dust it would be observed that it emits a constant source of energy to it.

If one were to succeed in creating hardened redstone they would find its properties quite different than the dust form. First off, it not longer is a strong oxidizing agent, being able to be present near fire without even a significant increase in temperature. Hardened redstone also behaves differently than dust when in the presence of water, mostly for the worse. If hardened redstone were to come into contact with water it would experience a violent reaction, combusting into flames and releasing a very large amount of heat into its surrounding area.

Uses of Redstone

Redstone serves three main purposes being: tattoos, wiring and smithing.

Redstone Wiring

There is a wide array of things that Red-stone, in it's base form or not, can achieve. There have been advances in Alchemy with it's powdered, raw form, innovations in technology involving energy-based lighting and piston-control and many other things that a common technician would recall upon a whim.

First of all, it's prime utilization is the ability to conduct electricity via wired form. Once properly compressed and adjusted into metal wiring, there is a large variety of things able to be created; things like lamps to darker inventions such as electric-chairs. Pistons are powered by Red-stone, and even a dim light-source can be made with Red-stone. There are many things to create with this substance, but like everything else that is useful, it also has it's dangers.

Redstone Smithing

As stated earlier, redstone dust has the ability to be melted and then cooled into a hardened form. If the melted redstone is poured into a mold and then cooled quickly it will take the shape of the mold. However, unlike ferrum, hardened redstone is quite brittle and lacks the ability to be refined a great deal once hardened. For this reason it is impossible to create blades  or sharp edges out of hardened redstone. However, hardened redstone still has the ability to be made into blunt weaponry such as warhammers or clubs.

Redlines of Redstone

Redstone cannot be crafted into make-shift bombs. The event of attempting this is more prone to causing the substance to explode on the tinkerer than after anything had been somehow crafted together.

Redstone is not a source of mana for Mages. Redstone had become Redstone because the pockets of mana compressed overtime, and thus, developed into a mineral with special properties. Essentially -- Redstone is solidified mana.

Redstone cannot be utilized for the base of any healing concoctions. It is (understandably) poisonous and only through alchemy can it's hazards be diluted.

Redstone, Redstone wiring or any devices concocted via Redstone origins cannot be utilized to create anything advanced. Common examples of "advanced" are weapons, robots and futuristic-esque machinery like boats, automobiles and flying ships. (especially boats -- the boats would probably explode if they had wiring).

If redstone is being used in roleplaying circumstances the properties and its unique interactions with certain substance MUST be taken into account.

Hardened redstone CANNOT be made into any form of sharp edges or points. This includes but is not limited to: swords, pickaxes, daggers, knives, etc.

If hardened redstone armour is worn its effects and interactions with water MUST be taken into account accordingly. This means that if your character is wearing hardened redstone armour in the rain the armour will spontaneously combust and release A LOT of energy in a very short time period and will cause at least 3rd degree burns to skin in contact with the hardened redstone if only a very small portion is on your person. If you are wearing full hardened redstone armour and it comes into contact with even a few drops of water, you will die.

Placing a cloth over hardened redstone will NOT stop it from experiencing the reaction with water as if even a damp cloth comes into contact with hardened redstone it will experience the violent reaction.

Despite redstone releasing a very large amount of energy in a short period of time when burned it CANNOT be made into a makeshift bomb. The energy released is heat and therefore does not cause an explosion.
