Web Update Log - February

Recommended Posts

Introduction

Hi! I’m back and am once more slaving away on our community’s home, this wonderfu – er, mediocre website of ours. I’ve got a lot of things planned, but this month I largely worked on cosmetic changes, establishing a unified nomenclature for titulage, and ensuring that a singular style is in use across the entire site, such as in the redesigned voting widget or the new statistics widget.

Key

+ Added  * Changed  - Removed  ^ Planned

Changelog

+ Set up the Google Drive embed. To embed Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, click File > Publish to the web, copy that link, and paste it into the Editor. An embed should automatically populate.

+ Added a Statistics widget which combines a number of software generated statistics in one central location to notate total topics, total posts, total uses, most users on at once, and the newest registered user [F.1]

- Deleted the arbitrary Search button from the menu drop down as there is a search bar right at the top of every page on this website, as well as the Online Users button, since there is a widget for that on the index
- Removed Iblees, deus vult.

* Redesigned the Vote widget on the forum index, using established widget styles. There are 3 forum views: index, forum, and thread. Since there is the Vote redirect forum on the index, the Vote widget is not displayed there. It is however present on the forum and thread views, so that no matter where you are on the forum, you’re reminded to vote. [F.2]

* Renamed and reorganized various forums to promote a unified nomenclature, remove clutter, and improve the overall aesthetic of the index. A full list of changes is contained below. This was the bulk of my work this month, and feedback is greatly appreciated.

* Increased the width between objects in the news slider.
^ My real goal this month is to make a responsive, hypertext version of the current home page. This would adapt to whatever devious you’re on, obviously, but there would be other new features, such as animated icons, perhaps moving GIFs, and other rich media to make it far more inviting.
^ Beyond this, expect more changes to forum names, additions of new forums, and other changes to continue to promote a unified style.

Forum Changes
Renamed News & Announcements to Official Forums
Reordered the top level categories
Renamed Server Information to Rules
Moved Forum Roleplay out of Creative Writing
Renamed any instance of and to &, ie Screenshots & Videos
Renamed Off Topic to Community Central
Moved Event Proposals under Lore
Created a dedicated AMA subforum under Off Topic
Renamed the Applications & Tutorials top level category to Applications & Guides
Reorganized the Applications & Guides subforums
Reorganized Reports, Support & Feedback so that it is in the order of Reports, Support, & Feedback as well as added an Oxford comma
Moved Oren and other defunct nations into the Defunct Nations archive

Conclusion

Expect more upgrades, adjustments, and general improvements done to the website. My goal as a web developer is to promote the absolute best user experience possible, ensuring that ease of access and usability are the most considered factors when making design or development decisions. If you have feedback, please do not hesitate to hit me up on Discord, private message me here, or otherwise get in contact with me. I started working late in this month, so I'm sorry for my lackluster work, but neverthless, I'm looking forward to helping fix and upgrade more stuff!

Can the forums have a mobile version set up.

The software we run is entirely responsive and most pages should work well on phones. An app, on the other hand, would be nigh impossible. As said, we run forum software – themes, plugins, and other changes are plastered atop this software, which we did not create, and which we have bought a license to. If you have any issues with, or notice any bugs on the mobile version of the site, let me know.

Lotc is the only website that crashes my mobile browser when I'm using mobile data. If I navigate to the forum section of the website, my browser times out and crahses. I use an android 4s
