Reflections on the Everwar and on Humanity

Spoiler

As we enter our eleventh year of war, I have become increasingly prone to reflection. A close friend of mine recently coined the term ‘everwar’ to describe not only this conflict without end. But also the large seemingly endless conflict between my own people and the Imperial Court of the day. Mine is an ancient house, of the Great Houses of modernity only the various remnant cadets of what was once Horen can claim our history. One venturing back centuries, even predating the vaunted prestige of the Barbanovs of the Ruskan middle kingdom. Chronicled of course by the esteemed archivists of Renatus. We have had our grand triumphs, we have had our brutal tragedies. But always we have persevered. Where our detractors faltered, where our erstwhile conquerors fell we persevered. Stoically marching towards tomorrow, no matter the ails brought to bear against us.

It seems that my house has long been destined to stand in opposition to the grandiose mission of ‘human unity’. Always set apart by our pride, by our faith, by our stubborn refusal to yield principle even in the face of death. Increasingly I am of the belief that human unity is an untenable project. While and good in and of itself for the purposes of peace, of stability, of prosperity. It is a task beyond the capacity of the modern monarch. A decrepit institution increasingly secularized and democratized. Each successive generation more bohemian, less dynamic than their predecessor.

I intend this critique not one of will but more of a reflection upon the cycle or perhaps the decline of humanity. In my eyes the age of heroes has passed. Who amongst the ranks of mankind now can be held as an exemplar. The great scions of Renatus increasingly pass into memory, that glorious empire a brief resurgence of the old glories of mankind. Our race is glorious, or perhaps was glorious not because of our capacity for lofty ideals, for words, for debate. Our legacy, our foundation was built by conquerors. Forging the steel bonds of Empire with the blood and the soil of humanity, and the bones of its foes. Those who would not yield to our ancient forebears, be they man or subhuman were swiftly subdued.

Perhaps this is merely my lamentations as an ardent student of history. My rose tinted spectacles reflecting the past better than it truly was. I have lost count of which incarnation of the ‘Empire’ we are currently coexisting with. But the principle of the matter lies therein. Modern Empires, if they can be called that are pathetically fragile. Falling apart at the slightest of pressures. I would posit that this is the result of the declining character of man, and the declining character of the aristocrat. Among modern humanity there are none capable of uniting humanity. Amongst the lesser houses and common soldier the terms ‘honour’ and ‘loyalty’ have almost entirely left the vocabulary of our race.

When the Merentels of Curon debased themselves in the most repulsive manner, all whilst acting outside of their legal authority there was no repercussion. In fact I was actively vilified for barring their foul craven presence from my lands. Amongst humanity it seems to have become a matter of course to break one’s oaths, to so easily engage in sedition, to turn one's coat for mere materiel promised by a silk laden tongue. Perhaps a phenomenon springing forth from the increased secularization of our race as a whole, a disconnect with the divine, with the spiritual. Perhaps a decline in human stock by way of constant pruning of our greatest bloodlines. I cannot truly say. Even the supposedly ‘great’ house of Devereux is infamous for turning it’s coat twice if not thrice per war. A house so lacking in valour that when its titles and stolen, like a whipped dog it rolls over and displays its stomach.

Of the Great Houses of humanity it is difficult to properly communicate my disappointment. The King of Helena, head of this southern federation has been made to kneel, not once but thrice with his nose in the dirt. My boot resting upon his head. The King of Ruska hiding behind his gate like an ashamed rodent. Too fearful to speak to proper men of the human race. The Queen of Curon, prior to her successor’s pathetic surrender of their admittedly prestigeless titles was made to bow her head before it rolled from her shoulders. Where then I ask are the great Heroes? Has the greatness of Horen flown with the fall of the Unconquered Renatus. Where gone the greatness of Carrion? Of Chivay? Of Hanseti proper, not this masquerade of Raevir playing at Marian roots.

Even the High Lords of Suffonia have disappointed me of late. While honourable and competent warriors in their own right, perhaps being the only human realm with an army outnumbering my own. They refuse to acknowledge the puppeted nature of the southern church. Merely a marionette on strings. Failing to condemn the race mixing, the exercise of non-human faith, the breaking of oaths, the partisan divorces, the sacramentless coronation. Just further evidence in the hollow nature of the church as an institution of moral authority. Yet despite all of this my Suffonian friends still seek the approval of an institution that actively reviles and insults them at every turn. I can only pray that they will see the light.

---

The greatest realms of man have been those founded upon strength and conquest. But perhaps the age of man is setting. The age of heroes long past. The stock of mankind going to weed.

Godric,

A Waldenian knight of ancient stock allowed himself a single tear, letting it drop upon the essay’s parchment as his thoughts wandered towards the countless fallen heroes of old, knights of Renatia Invicta fearless in both life and death. “Their name,” he whispered, “lives forevermore.”

The thick-bearded Lucian Renault would give a low humm at the thesis that lay before him.
“When my father, a Knight and honorable- told me of the greatest houses of Man, and the history of all before it – heroes and leaders alike, the church was all but absent from these accomplishments, merely taking responsibility for the accomplishments of better men. These better men were made into saints, as if the title gained afterward justified the men they were before the fact. Godfrey’s return was nothing short of holy, aye- but the church had nothing to do with his return, nor his actions. The Empire was the greatest that will ever grace these lands, even in it’s sheer power it could not contain itself, yet it did- but as soon as the black-and-purple tower stop casting its shadow, so did the sheep and snakes that spewed into where it once was attempt to compare the shadow they cast, to it. It is disappointing that this war is fought by men who want to see it end, and men so fanatical about parchment and whatever their mother taught them to write upon them, that it still continues.”

“Something that I am indeed investigating however thwarted and insulted by the imperials in the process.” commented the Auditor of the Tribunal, he would however send a two copies of his published works to Godric!

“Wordsmith detailing stories of their enemies despite never actually mingling with the populations they debase – while this does ring true for both sides, God knows how many propaganda leaflets I receive, these Morsgradians are the ones who keep this up the most in a vain attempt to wh0re themselves out for attention. They remind me of a child that throws a fit, wailing with words or preying on the weak and unfortunate on the roads, rendering their arguments as unworthy of my dedicated attention or any others with a mind. The endless spew of this particular rhetoric has been uncovering the hypocrisy and the lack of sense they portray in their attempts to look righteous.” Mikael Kovachev says aloud, during the morning gathering in his family castle. A few murmurs of agreeance are said, but soon his relatives turn to frowning as he continues on.

“But as this war continues to rage on, people do not bother to comprehend the information being tossed around, they simply nod their heads and agree with whatever is said by their peers, forever destined to act like sheep. Is it not these Morsgradian People and their ancestors that are the cause of much unrest in the centuries before this time? Like rabid dogs they bite at everything around them. They are clouded in so much pessimism that they believe the world is out to put them to ruin. Furthermore, this ‘Godric’ fellow seemingly fashions himself as a scholarly man, but his impulsiveness is apparent, and his strings are clear as day, a puppet of the Great Deceiver.” he spoke with much emphasis on the last words as he sticks a finger up, hushing one of his brothers that attempt to interrupt him. Mikael’s family clearly concerned by his sudden rant.

“Oren unites, and Morsgrad destroys, history proves this. This conflict will truly never end until one side is annihilated by the other. This view that the strong create secure environments from which weak men are bred is entirely moronic, and depicts the attitude of an mentally unstable fellow. Regardless, I suppose these documents I keep finding on my desk are always a good source of reading material for myself to rummage through and pick apart.” the Kovachev continues on, flipping through another page of the book. He takes another sip from his cup. The Kovafamily now accepting their fate.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion that Morsgrad should be destroyed, so that a new era of Pan-Orenist ideals may be revived.” he finishes, concluding his thoughts upon the matter. He takes one final sip of his cocoa, placing aside the cup as he continues to read through his history books. A few sparse claps echoing off of the Kovawalls.

Simon’s outbursts in the court of Helena at Duke Godric’s missives had long become a source of caricature within the empire. Younger officials had even begun to emulate and parody his critiques, both in respect and in jest at the aging Archchancellor’s rhetoric. That said, there was no ire heard from the fiery Rhenyari in reading the most recent missive – as he took time aside the Duke of Helena, the only words he had of the account soon sifted among court and country.

“If our Nordling has given up on man, then he is truly lost.”

”Young Edlyn has never known a world without this war, I hope my future children do not suffer the same fate.” Edyth would say to Anya, feeling quite dejected in the tavern. Her thoughts and prayers would be with the young girl who she hadn’t seen in quite sometime. ”I just hope she’s safe, given Lorraine’s history. We’re not family now but...I care for her safety all the same.”
