“Virtue and Vice”
Annabelle Kelmenour

The morals and values of a person are what makes them unique and what makes the person, a person.   The idea of what is morally ‘good’ or ‘evil’ to one person, may not hold true to another.  Regardless, one is never more true than the other in a complete and total absolute.

Morality
“To be virtuous is to live by your morals and to allow a well-ordered mind to direct you”

Virtue.  A belief that one’s ideologies are what is moral, fair, and true.

There are many standards of life that can be seen as universal truths of sorts.  Morals that anyone can agree is right or wrong, good or bad.  Most can agree that murder is bad.  Lying is wrong.  Punishments must be fair and just.

Our morals and beliefs are what begin a foundation to who we are; without them, you have no true motivation for doing what you believe is right or wrong.  You’d go about life having no goals or dreams, no wants for things to change.  Our morals ground us.

Immorality
“Why do we kill people who kill people? To teach them that killing people is wrong?”

Vice.  Immoral, evil, or unfair beliefs or practices.

Some vices can be as simple as smoking, drinking, gambling.  Others can have worse consequences on your relationship with others like lust, cheating, vengeful thoughts.  Most can agree that you could add traits like greed, self-serving, and pride or stubbornness as well.

Whether they’d like to admit it or not, everyone has their own vices and virtues.  A bit of evil and a bit of goodness.  The morals we are grounded in are what motivates us, and most often they are locked and formed around things or those we love.  If you truly love something, you’d do anything to protect and keep it, even if it means doing things that others may see as immoral.  Just like our morals, our vices center our actions.  Without a compass of what is right and wrong, our views of what is ‘good’ become skewed and are no longer validated.

The Hypocrisy of Right and Wrong

“No punishment of the unrighteous has ever been too severe in the eyes of the righteous”

As people, we have flaws.  We all find a way to excuse our mistakes and actions.  We even tell ourselves one thing is bad, yet we do it anyway.  Some say lying is wrong, but a white lie here and there is helpful and just.  We justify our vices with our virtues.

Justice must be served one way or another, but the punishment one receives can be seen as equal to one, and more or less to another.  ‘An eye for an eye’ some say, but is equal punishment as honorable as mercy?  It’s difficult to forgive and forget, but in some cases that is the best course of action.  If you kill the killer, does that make you any better?  One’s virtues and vices are what make them humane, whether right, or wrong, or not.

Audry Sanguine would be reading over the paper that had been placed upon a table within the brotherhood guildhall, a mug of hot cocoa in her hand. She takes a small sip from the cocoa, burning herself a tad with a little cringe, setting the mug down before picking up the paper in her left hand as she sits for a closer read. Her right hand, tracing her thumb over the band of her wedding ring, "An interesting read... Honestly I can't say I expected this from Anna, but she seems to be full of surprises." She chuckles in memory of Anna's previously perfect aim in darts, setting the paper back upon the table to return to her cocoa.

Ambient

On a colder Orenian morning, humming to herself, Mayilun Dering would be seated in the brotherhood guildhall eating breakfast!

The young girl's gaze would wander a bit. Bouncing from chair, to table, to chair, to table as she played with her food... until eventually falling upon the missive!

"What's that, Mr. Lu?" Whispers the small mali to her ginger kitten snug in her lap, only getting a meow in return.

Hoping from her seat, May inches closer to the missive. The young Dering's eyes squinting as her hues scanned the page.

Due to her low reading level, she doesn't quite understand the meaning behind the words. However, May's eyes lit up upon reading her mother's name.

"Is Momma throwin' a party?!" Exclaims the child with newfound excitement. "Mr. Lu! Tha' means we gotta get ye' a suit!"

Late into an Orenian evening, with a grayed smog periodically clouding the moon, Anduin's figure leaned against the balcony that overlooked Pompourelia Street. Silence lingered over the straightened, orderly street save for a soft crinkling of parchment. Within Anduin's loose hold was an article titled Virtue and Vice.

He had already read over the missive, though he now engrossed himself with reflection. Yet, he wouldn't dare announce his thoughts to the barren alley in the Orenian Capital. There was nobody to hear them, after all.

The 'ame raised the cracking clay mug at his side and drew a quick sip from it. Thereafter the cup was returned to the wooden beam as Anduin continued to brood over the tellings of Virtue and Vice.
