Vere standing outside of Corwinsburg

Dear Brennus,

Haló, I know it’s been a long time and we haven’t talked much but I want you to know that I am happy and safe. I’ve landed myself a place to stay in Corwinsburg and have befriended a lot of the family too.

I decided to wear clothes that fit their group and it seems to have worked, though I’ve kept my traditional warpaint as a symbol of our culture. I’ve also picked up politics and at a time like this (especially the part where Aaun is now a kingdom) I consider it a useful skill.

The family allows me to go with them to meetings and votes and such and I’ve learnt a lot about this part of Almaris. It’s really interesting once you get into it but I suppose that’s in the eye of the perceiver.

Do you know they are all fancy here? They talk in posh accents and drink pure whiskey (that they made!) It was a shock to the system when I first arrived, but I quickly got used to it, they are all polite so it’s easy to bare. When I was given a room, I offered to help work around the keep but they denied me! They said I’m a guest and a guest deserve more than being a worker, I wonder how a person can be so polite, but they’ve offered me nothing but kindness.

How are you, Brennus? I hope you are well in the new troich settlement. (I also hope the weather is treating you well, it’s cold there.)

Please pen me as soon as you get this!

Brennus held the letter in his lap as he laid beneath the largest of the three runestones, newly turned upright, that towered over the entrance to Khron'Hundmar. I fear my judgment in our first gathering in the halls of the Undercity had been wrong and she may have been made to feel apprehensive by my decision. He flattened the parchment and read each line closer, repeating the word Corwinsburg and Aaun to himself as if committing it to memory. I fault naught but my own self that she may be apart, my father was a much better gatherer of people than I. He casted a jovial glance towards Caitlin O'Lenaghan and Kargarn Doomforged, the two resting on their haunches braced against opposite runestones. It gives me good joy to know she keeps the tradition despite our separation. He would stand himself up and jog downhill from the plateau upon which the runestone circle stood.

He reached for a parchment and quill at a small outpost. He drafted and revised a letter that reads:

"Dear Guinevere,

It warms my heart knowing your safety is secure, your health is good, and your fortunes blessed. I want you to know that you will always have a hearth and home here in what I believe we may call Brigwindosdur, in our tribe's tongue conveys the meaning of 'The Village of the White Hill' above Khron'Hundmar.

I, as your elder, admit the onus of my mistake when you and I first visited Khron'Hundmar and I failed to recognize your consternation. Know that I am truly happy you have found a residence you are more comfortable with and know that I am honored beyond measure that you keep to the Cingedoz tradition. Let no one dissociate you from your origins, permit no axe teeth against your roots.

If you can forgive my blunder, I would like to stay in correspondence. I'd also like to have you visit us and I shall pay Corwinsburg a visit as well. I am not the best at leading a people like my father Gaisorix, but I can make up for it in imparting knowledge to keep your sense of tradition strong and your center secure against what natural forces of assimilation exist in the world. Do good by those in Corwinsburg for one of the pillars of our tradition is to bring boon and benefit to those denizens we live amongst. My father did so in raising the earthenwork dun wall outside Dunrath when the Cingedoz used to reside among the Rathonians and I know you will do good whether in politics or other matters.

Langosidos swesorek Guinevere [1],

Brennus hal'Cingedoz"

A painting of Louis

Dear Brennus,

I got a puppy! I also met quite a few more people, it’s mad how many people the family I live with know. Ottomar, the man who offered me the place to stay, practically knows everyone in Haense and around Aaun. He’s the one who’s guided me to all these different places and has been a great help.

The one thing I’m annoyed about is the lack of cigars! It’s dreadful not being able to smoke whilst I watch the view, but I have been able to have plenty of tea whilst I write. Due to the lack of cigars I decided to buy a puppy instead and my friend Ottomar recommended I call him ‘Louis’ after his new friend, Louis Joseph.

Next, I’m going to buy a pug and name it after Ottomar, it’ll be funny to watch and it seems the family likes the new addition to the house seeing as he brings joy, especially when playing.

We bet on a snowball fight in Haense and obviously, I won the ten-mina bet simply because I know by looking at the folk who’s got the best team. Haense was an exciting place, cold as anything considering how much of a difference it is to Vistulia. I don’t know how you can stay in the dwarven place when it’s much the same.

You should undoubtedly visit sometime; they are lovely people, and I can also show you their Walrus along with their church. You may enjoy the view of the place too. I often stand on the bridge at night and watch the stars over the hills and houses, so peaceful.

Of course, I miss home and our people but that’s only natural, so I’ll be sure to bundle up and visit this new village someday, I’m glad you’ve all progressed and adapted so quickly, but of course, that’s in our nature so it was only natural.

I am also adapting well to my environment here and even considering it home, I will make sure to offer the same amount of kindness they have given me, it’s the least I can do.

"Dear Guinevere,

I am happy to see such a happy and hardy animal taken under your care. Reminds me of the hounds that cousins Bodbmakos and Cormack would keep in old Vistulia. They are loyal animals, giving life and limb to aid you. You will come to witness its companionship the older the good animal gets.

The landmarks and, particularly, the beast you have described has given me confidence that I did happen upon Corwinsburg a few stone's days ago. I believe I passed the fair town upon the mountains during my travels to old Dobrov of which I will explain more when we see each other in person. I shall pay another visit in hopes of a rendezvous with you and to meet this good Ottomar and his family.

In fact, with the prospect of visiting you, an idea crossed my mind. Would your denizens of Corwinsburg be interested in a runestone raised on their grounds? You and I can mine the limestone or I can bring it loaded on a wain bound to my horse and we can lift it upright and inscribe upon it whatever you wish. I might be able to, if the folk of Corwinsburg are comfortable, animate the reliefs we engrave or leave a poem tied to the runestone that would read out loud for those near enough to it. Do let good Ottomar know that our runestones have no religious significance as I do not want him cross with the impression that we evangelize against their Canonist faith. I intend nothing of the sort.

Much obliged good Guinevere, Langosidos Ambactosnemetoi,

Brennus hal'Cingedoz"
