The Sleeping Arentanian Giant

Written by,

Caius Godwin ‘The Bastard Prince’ Jrent

Long ago, in the beginning of the migration to Almaris, there was a gigantic giant who wandered the lands of Aaun. This giant was so big that even the tallest tower in all of Almaris was no match for him. Many people were curious, for they discovered massive footprints in the woods and beyond - and so many went on excursions to discover this giant.

The man who led this excursion named Alfred said to his four companions “How can it be that there is such a gigantic creature walking this land, and no one has seen it?”

“I have no clue sir, all I know is that we better find a solution for this grotesque mystery.” Said Egbert, a close friend of Alfred, concerningly looking about in the gigantic forest where they found themselves in. “People must think of us as delusional for finding this so-called giant.. What if there is none to be found?”

Alfred burst in laughter, amused at the thought of Egbert - giving him a supportive pat on his shoulder. “Do not worry too much Egbert, we are sure to find it; besides, why else would we have found those gigantic footprints in the forests and outside of it?”

Egbert slowly bobbed his head, though in quite some doubt “Alright, a good point.” With that he began to follow Alfred along in following the footsteps to an open field of grass. Egbert halted and pointed to the open field. “Let us set up camp here, we are sure to see the giant himself  in such an obvious spot.”

Alfred nodded to Egbert and the other four companions. “Let us set up camp here, and be on guard for the night, we surely can not miss this giant.” And so they were seated around the campfire, cooking their collected meats from various hunts.

Alfred and Egbert at their camp, awaiting the giant to appear one way or another.

Then, as luck would have it; they heard a loud beating that would come from the forest where they had come from, shaking the earth beneath them. Alfred and Egbert rose up, running towards the forest. And there it was, a gigantic man, covered in many stones which seemed to be the giant’s own made armor. It gazed down upon Alfred and Egbert and their companions, they simply looked back, for the giant was too big to be slain. Nonetheless, they withdrew their swords and laid them on the ground; a sign of surrender to be given to the giant, should it understand reason.

The Giant and his brothers.

It was when the steel touched the ground, that three other giants rose from the land, supposedly brothers or few of the giants left.

Alfred shouted towards the giant. “We are here to make peace, and not enemies!” He said, not too sure whether the giant was able to understand him.

Then, the giant leant forth, gripping upon the edge of the cliff the companions found themselves on - looking them all in their eyes and stating in a loud voice. “You have awoken me and my brothers..”

Chaos erupted in the group of discoverers of Alfred and Egbert, all of them dispersing except them two - continuing to try and converse with the giants that were standing in front of them. Although a heroic act, yet they were shaken to their core.

Egbert said “I will swear on the life of myself, we will let you all rest for all eternity - and should either one of our descendants be waking you again, then we will let it be your decision as to what happens to Man. Go and rest!”

Then, miraculously, the giants listened - they all laid down and went to sleep for eternity, rocks - piling up on them as in their sleep, they died a few years after the discoverers had ended their expedition. The skin of the giants turned into rock-like objects and they began to form the shape of mountains alongside each other, and the hairs began to turn into the many trees and grass that cover them.

It was then realized, in this age, that the peaks we now know as the Arentian Alps, are in fact shaped by the corpses of giants who came long before us. Where now the vassals of Aaun have settled on.

Kazimierz Pulaski remembers the old tales of a secret guardian of the Arentanian Alps, the Great Grod, and wonders to himself if that old fairy tale may have held some truth to it after all.
