New Theme - Feedback Thread

Hello everyone!

I've received a lot of feedback and suggestions from various people across different platforms. To make it easier for everyone to share their thoughts and for me to track them, I've created this centralized thread where you can post any feedback you might have. Some people didn't think that an entire topic was warranted for their feedback, so I created this thread. Whether it's a small tweak or a larger suggestion, this is the place to share it! (I can't read every status update)

As you all know, the new theme is a work in progress, meaning that the theme that you see currently might not be the final theme in the end. Like everything else on the server, it is constantly developing and changing depending on different needs. So feel free to share what things you would like to have or things that you would like to change.

Good Feedback
Good feedback is specific, constructive, and actionable. It helps me understand exactly what you're experiencing and gives me a clear direction on how we can improve the website. Here are some examples:

Specific: "The new forum theme is too bright, which strains my eyes. A darker or adjustable theme option would be great."

Constructive: "The new theme's color scheme is hard on the eyes after long use. A darker palette or dark mode could help."

Actionable: "It would be really helpful if the new forum theme included a dark mode option or allowed users to customize the brightness levels."

(This is the most common feedback, and I am aware of this)

Bad Feedback
Feedback that is vague, non-constructive, or lacks detail can be difficult to act upon. Here are examples of feedback that isn't as useful:

Vague: "The website is not good."

Non-constructive: "This feature is terrible."

Lacks Detail: "I don't like this."

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

Thank you!

List of Fixed Things:

- Rounded corners on dropdown boxes in menu.
- Member Titles.
- Homepage Slider buttons responsive scales.
- Turned down brightness of orange section banner.
- Transparent background on Whitelist Applications.
- Added red dot for unread content to "Recent Topics" and "Popular Topics" sidebar.
- Added the top breadcrumb back in Topics

I believe the style of the theme is quite fun and great, by style I mean the shapes. However, it does feel like you've attempted to stick with the same colours from the last theme, and they conflict eachother greatly. I also believe that the back of posts should not be transparent, or atleast, more blurred out than the rest of the background

Personal preference, but I prefer the directory at the top of the page instead of only at the bottom, which is how it is in the new theme. It makes navigating a lot easier.

Thanks for the feedback!

The reason it was removed in the first place, was because it was very cluttered in the old design, so in order to keep the clean aesthetic in the new theme I decided to remove it.

I have reintroduced it back, however only in topics as I have gathered feedback and heard that this is the most common use scenario (people want to go back one step fast from a topic, so they don't have to scroll to the bottom everytime). If the problem remains, I will have a look at other options for possible solutions.

Once again, thanks for the feedback :)

Sort of related?

Please get rid of the 10,000 random google ads on the forums!

Does this make any money for the server? Enough for how ugly and unusable it makes the forums?

It looks like something left over from 12 years ago and might be time to reevaluate if they are worth the harm they are causing to the forum experience. Everyone hates ads.

They are so ugly and make the forum really hard to use on mobile devices.

Alright, let me go through each of these:

This is a bug with Ajax and rich media like youtube videos or images. When those things are loaded in the status updates and you go back to the previous page, it stunlocks the status update widget, because it attempts to load media that has already been loaded. Thanks for the feedback, the bug is noted.

also i am on /forums, I cannot create a thread, just remove the section, it's useless, it's a forum, yes everyone knows LOL

1. The reason for the padding of the button, is that the way that invision community handles HTML is by packaging each section in a different HTML file, and then by referencing that HTML file for functionality. It happens to be the case, that the "Start new topic" button is in a different file than the header, and so is just referenced with a {template="create_thread"} in the forums HTML page, meaning it would be more trouble than it is worth to edit the padding on this so that it is on the same line.

2. The discord widget is likely uneven because you are not logged in + you are using an adblocker. The uneven part is likely where an ad would be.. It is even if you have the VIP tier without ads.
Xptto8h.png

3. This button acts the same as the "+ Create" at the top of the page. And as any designer will tell you, then it is good to have a consistent layout across each section of the forums, as to not introduce new elements depending on where you are.

How can you take a screenshot of text used in 3 different places and say that it is not unified? All sidebar widgets are unified, all forum sections are unified and the bottom "members online" are unified. Either way, Feedback noted.

It's not visible because you have read everything in that section... If something is unread it will be visible... This is a feature/functionality

It is both at the bottom and the top of the page.. It can be both.. The reason why you would have it at the bottom, is to make it easy for people who scrolled to the bottom of the forum, to go back one section, without scrolling to the top.

Yeah, I don't think the discord widget have been updated since 2018. Unfortunately, this is more a functionality issue, and less of a theme issue and I will force @Llir to fix it, but for now, the feedback is noted.

I don't get what is wrong here? If you are talking about the layout of the slider buttons, then it is defined by the plugin, and will likely be fixed when I fix the issue with the Ajax loading (But even if it not fixed, is it that big of an issue?).

The reason we removed the slider, is because it was using an outdated depreciated plugin to work, and since we updated we have disabled it. We are already working on a new homepage, as you can read on our latest web update here:

Yeah, this is problematic, I was actually considering removing this from anyone who wasn't a staff/mod, or move it to your profile instead. The reason is because if you are a mod etc. you have ALOT of submenus, and it was just so hidden away that I didn't bother updating the look to fit. Feedback noted.

These pages are horrible in every way, because they are created separately from the theme itself, so unfortunately to change anything there, I have to go through the admin team/mod team/story team/community team, because this is pages that they control (I would personally completely remake these pages, but I can't). Feedback noted either way.

This is the menu defined by the admins, we could rearrange the menus, but this has nothing to do with the theme, and more to do with functionality. Recaptcha v3 is an invision community thing, not likely to be updated. The lore redirecting to forums is an oversight, and I will get that fixed.

Because sometimes people want to upload their own media by drag and dropping, unfortunately invision community has been very clear, that they won't support that large amount of storage for hosting images. So the best option was to have people understand that they can't upload images (unless very small images) to their topics, and instead have to paste URLs.

the finale would be that having transparent main ui components is not a good design for people with sight problems and others, we would have to scrap the whole thing

Hello, I am the designer. Although I am not "hired" and do not get paid, I spend my spare time improving both the frontend and backend of the website. We have come a long way from where we were just a year ago, but there are still problems to solve and issues to fix.

I understand the frustration, but constructive feedback is far more useful than being snarky. I am always open to hearing specific, actionable suggestions. If there are areas where the UI is unclear, I want to know so I can make it better.

Regarding the transparency of UI components, accessibility is a priority, and I will review the design to ensure it is usable for people with vision impairments. If you have specific examples of where the transparency causes problems, please share them.

But please remember that continuous improvement takes time, and this is a voluntary effort on my part.

Thank you.

1. The reason for the padding of the button, is that the way that invision community handles HTML is by packaging each section in a different HTML file, and then by referencing that HTML file for functionality. It happens to be the case, that the "Start new topic" button is in a different file than the

header, and so is just referenced with a {template="create_thread"} in the forums HTML page, meaning it would be more trouble than it is worth to edit the padding on this so that it is on the same line.

This is a big yikes, in the end, yes, you can template files but at the end of the day, everything is packaged together in a single html page. You can apply a CSS to the whole page, there's no "templating" beside separating css files, it takes a second to add a display:flex to a place and just improve the layout and combine it with the layout it has inside subforums.

This is a bug with Ajax and rich media like youtube videos or images. When those things are loaded in the status updates and you go back to the previous page, it stunlocks the status update widget, because it attempts to load media that has already been loaded. Thanks for the feedback, the bug is noted.

I don't need you to explain to me the bug, I need you to create the javascript code to fix it.

2. The discord widget is likely uneven because you are not logged in + you are using an adblocker. The uneven part is likely where an ad would be.. It is even if you have the VIP tier without ads.

So anyone who's not logged in discord on his browser cannot see anything about the widget. You're also arguing against addons that's used by now what, 60-70%++ of the web. You need to think your design for everything, mobile, tablets, the different browsers from apple to firefox, and these days that includes browsers with ad blockers.

It takes a minute to remove the fanthom padding when there's no div over itself, takes a minute on chatgpt.

Quote

It's not visible because you have read everything in that section... If something is unread it will be visible... This is a feature/functionality

It's still too dark for absolutely no reason, you need to discern it. For users not logged in to lotc, it looks like shit because they haven't read any post.

Quote

I don't get what is wrong here? If you are talking about the layout of the slider buttons, then it is defined by the plugin, and will likely be fixed when I fix the issue with the Ajax loading (But even if it not fixed, is it that big of an issue?).

image.png.3df31534e2e9c49607f228b87bd825d7.png Are you really our web guy when you cannot see that the X should be completely on the right ?

Quote

The reason we removed the slider, is because it was using an outdated depreciated plugin to work, and since we updated we have disabled it. We are already working on a new homepage, as you can read on our latest web update here:

Sliders should be easily managed with any modern javascript library like swiper.js, those are used everywhere even in websites because they make your life easier.

Recaptcha is created by Google, there should be a way for you to code it for the stuff or use a community invision plugin on github like I have found.

So you see you have two <centers> </center> that are apart from each other which means your title is not centered with your bottom one. anyways, should be done via css.

Just like there was in the old text editor, can we just switch to tinymce ? After you write 300 words that stuff is gone, anyways, it's 100% done automatically these days, just remove the useless button or add it to the text editor, like it should be.

These pages are horrible in every way, because they are created separately from the theme itself, so unfortunately to change anything there, I have to go through the admin team/mod team/story team/community team, because this is pages that they control (I would personally completely remake these pages, but I can't). Feedback noted either way.

You can still harass llir to add css to the page and fix the childish overflow.

This is purely in the realm of the tech team, you can add a javascript .js to the page itself or use the general one and create the code to automatically clear the form on the apply page when the user first focuses on it.

It takes 4-5 hours max to make a webpage in day, just get the designs out and have them coded out. It doesn't have to take 15 years for the forums to improve.

If it's your passion to make websites, well then it should show up on the website itself, if it's not, it shows up. I would spend my whole weekends improving every little bit of the experience here, again different stroke for different people.

Also, you're going to receive a harsher review on your first client review or even colleague review, so don't take it that personally and just move on to improve things. You're bucking off childish things and things that could actually improve the experience, stop acting like a teenager.

Thank you and have a nice day @xDK

After reading your comment, it's clear to me that you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how Invision Community works.

Invision Community is a closed, PHP-based system. You keep suggesting "just add JavaScript" or "just change the CSS," as if it's a blank HTML page you can directly manipulate. It’s not. The HTML is split across multiple templates, loaded dynamically, and often controlled by server-side logic. So no, I can't just "add display: flex" wherever you want.

Your suggestion about the "Start New Topic" button is a perfect example. It's loaded via a separate template, not directly accessible in the main HTML structure. So your magical "fix" isn’t even possible without rewriting the template itself, which could break the theme.

The AJAX media bug isn’t something I can "fix with JavaScript" because it’s tied to how Invision Community loads and reloads media elements. This is basic knowledge for anyone who has worked with AJAX.

Your thoughts on the Discord widget are also completely off. The issue you mentioned is tied to the ads that dynamically load above it in Invision Community. This has nothing to do with CSS or even our code, it’s just a structural limitation caused by how the platform loads and positions ads.

Saying "just swap the slider with swiper.js" is another gem. We aren't working with a static website. Each plugin must be compatible with Invision Community's structure, and any change has to be tested to avoid breaking the site.

Your ideas on reCAPTCHA are another misunderstanding. Google’s reCAPTCHA works through their API, which is managed by Invision Community’s core code. We can’t just swap it out because you think there’s a better version.

This isn't a blank HTML page where you can click "Inspect" and make everything perfect. It's a system with complex server-side code, dynamic templates, and various permissions. I’m not "bucking off" your suggestions. I’m just telling you, you’re wrong.

But hey, feel free to join the web team, if you think you have some magical fix: Tech Applications

Sincerely, xDK

Hello gentlemen,

Before you ask yourself why I am not participating in the tech team, well you are the reason why, I do not have to time to argue with someone who's just afraid to learn how things work and get dirty, it's how you actually learn to develop and make cool things. Alright, now, let's begin.

The first rule of tech is that anything is possible and you are failing to respect it. That's where you will be able to discern yourself from the others in an interview. It was a great attempt at it but you went full redditor mode and just wrote a bunch of half-truths. It's alright to be wrong, it's even more wrong to defend yourself while you are wrong and not accepting that I am right, it's alright I understand that I've been a memer and dirty troll, but I am a competent programmer and that's comments from people with 15++ years of experience that are my colleagues that tell me that.

I don't think you understand how development works, even if hosted by invision, it does seem to be able to add custom css and js to pages, it's clear as day in the developer docs. If it's self-hosted by lotc, then we have free reign to understand how the software works and make changes to it, just make sure to never update it.

If you want to remove an item but you are so scared to change the invision core files, you just pass a css rule, like any competent developer. It doesn't matter that there's multiple html files, at the end of the day for a .css file, it reads the computed html file so, yes, you pass a rule, easy.

https://invisioncommunity.com/4guides/pages/recreating-the-release-notes-section/using-custom-css-js-r107/

https://invisioncommunity.com/developers/docs/development/applications/creating-a-simple-hello-world-application-r184/

https://invisioncommunity.com/developers/docs/development/plugins/overview-of-plugins-in-ips4-r41/

https://invisioncommunity.com/forums/topic/457017-where-to-add-javascript-snippet-on-homepage/

The fact is you don't understand how plug to play packages like swiper work, you replicate the html structure and instantiate it using the self-instantiated classes they have or do it yourself in a custom javascript. There's no need to have a custom plugin.

And yes, in my thoughts, upgrading to recaptcha v3 would be making a custom application or plugin and including recaptcha takes an hour max for any competent dev, it's easy.

I am in fact not wrong, you can learn any system and how they work, I've messed with phpBB and these types of stuff, they're built the same way. I don''t really get why you are arguing against someone who has developed multiple full stack php web apps to businesses, I understand how it works, you can even do it from the control panel.

Hopefully we can agree that I am right and that we can forward ourselves in a better area in the future by learning custom invision community software development and create cool plugins for this community !

Thank you very much,

Have a great day.

Hey Charles,

I’ll be honest. I agree with a lot of what you said. You’re clearly more experienced than me, and I have no doubt that you’re a solid developer. I’ve only been working with PHP and Invision Community for a couple of months. I picked it up just to help the community. No one asked me to, I just wanted to contribute.

That said, your way of giving feedback doesn’t help. You say I’m the reason you won’t join the tech team, but the irony is that people talking like you nearly kept me from joining too. I stuck around because I care about the website, even if I’m still learning.

I respect your background. If your coworkers say you’re a strong developer, I believe it. But it’s frustrating to see someone with your skillset write feedback that sounds like it was drafted in a fit of impatience.

Yes, almost anything is possible with enough time and access. But this isn’t just about what’s possible. It’s about what fits the platform, what we can maintain, and what’s realistic for a volunteer effort. You’re right that some of these fixes could be handled with smarter use of CSS or JS, and I’ve noted that.

We’re not the same. You’ve been doing this for years. I’ve been doing it for months. But I’m here, putting in the time, trying to improve things. If you actually care about making the community better, I’d welcome your help. If you just want to sit comfortably and throw insults, then there’s not much more to say.

Thanks for pointing out what’s broken. I'll keep working on it.

Hello xDk !

It’s alright, we’re all learning in life and this was a learning occasion for both of us. I learned a lot about the invision community forum and I will be honest, it looks like an enterprise solution that doesn’t really give out information for developers and usually the admin panels of those software are a confusing sack of shite.

Hopefully you learn to do cool things from it, saying that you created a theme, custom plugins and integrated outside solutions into a framework like that will certainly make you better than most.

Let’s keep developing,

Have a great week my friend,

Charles,
