Contact the Petran Star  inside the Fairweather Pub to inquire about tips, reporting services, jobs, and advertisements!     • ─────────────────── • It was only a month before this that the Swords of Saint Emma had whet their blades upon the Black Gates of Krugistan against the Vinovian Menace, and the commanders were astute in choosing to place their bets upon a small, readied party, rather than drawing upon a larger force of men still recovering from battle. Among these were the orcish squire Relen, the ambitious Trueblade Kermeros Entrati, and a wandering Astoran knight, Sir Frey.   The party was joined as they exited the city by one Herr Theodemar von Kanunsberg, a Reinmaran knight who carried himself with a bearing of honour,  wandering the lands upon a chivalric quest. It was said that Kanunsberg offered his aid to the soldiers out of kindness and duty, with no desire for reward. The western knight spurred his steed forth to follow the group of riders, war horses galloping across the steep cliff sides that frame the River Petra, the sun briefly bathing the river in gold as it rose upon the horizon.   The sun had still barely broken over the hills when the party arrived upon the Druscan Plateau, quickly encircling the camp of bannerless soldiers. Spearmen, bowmen, and a small infantry bearing war-axes patrolled the encampment- Though heavily injured were they, and fewer in number than the soldiers of the Commonwealth, little over a dozen. Before any fight could spark, a gruff, ill-tempered man emerged from the encampment and barked for attention. This was one Captain Carius, leader of these battered Northern mercenaries. Though he did not seem a diplomatic man, he could recognize a fight he did not want to pick.   The Master of Blades and his fellow commanders engaged Captain Carius in negotiations, extracting from him the truth of his men’s presence in the Commonwealth. Their order of errant soldiers, the Helvani Company, had come tracking a pack of large and vicious wolves at the behest of a foreign lord who had been long plagued by them. These wolves seemed to be not only uniquely large, by their description, but bizarrely intelligent. Such beasts would cause great ill fortune for the cow-herders of the Ladyran Highlands, should they indeed infest the Commonwealth as Carius predicted they would.   Realizing the threat at hand, it was in that battered, grim encampment that the soldiers of the Petra were sworn to slay the beasts in the Helvani Company’s stead.    Continued on page 2.	NEW MAYOR, NEW VALLANGE • ─────────────────── • AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LORD-MAYOR GUILLAUME AUCLAIR • ─────────────────── • It came as a surprise to everyone when the results of the Mayoral elections of Vallagne were declared, and only one man had thrown his hat in the ring to lead our city. Perhaps the heavy weight of the mayoral office scared off potential competitors, which leads only to curiosity- Who is the man who was willing to shoulder such a responsibility?   Without a proper Mayoral debate to tell us about the kind of man Lord-Mayor Guillaume Auclair is, I invited him to sit with me in the Fairweather Pub for an interview. It surprised me to see that he was a man of similar age to myself, both in our young adulthoods.    He carries the same fair hair and bright blue eyes as his mother the Dame-Chancellor, and requested a glass of Cordelie White when I offered him a drink. We began the interview on the balcony of the Fairweather, overlooking the Vallagne square.     Guillaume Auclair: Ah… Magnifique… I am excited to be interviewed, monsieur.   Caz MacFigeinn: Aye, I'm glad to hear it! Since there wasn't any competition for the job, the people of' the Petra didn’t really get to hear your campaign as mayor. Your mission statement, your plans, and so on. That's mostly what I wanted to talk with you about today. But first of all, what inspired you to run for the position of mayor?   GA: I simply want to do my duty as a Petran, for the kingdom. If one can do something, one must do something, oui? C'est tellement simple. As for my mission statement- My general agenda would be to promote Auverginian culture, though I will do what the people want. My first order of business would be to create a survey to determine what people lack and find lacking with the city.   CM: Speaking further on your agenda, do you have any other immediate plans now that you're in office? Are there areas of how Vallagne functions now that you think could be improved upon?   GA: My first action would be to find some helpers to add to my office. I believe in delegating work. If you are referring to Vallagne's functioning in terms of infrastructure, it is something I would have to discuss with le Roi, as the state of current  construction projects has been unclear. But in terms of what I am able to do now, I am considering having small carts at the start of the bridge for further commerce. Use money from them to support the treasury.   Continued on page 2. Send a letter along to Cameron MacFigeinn or Jörg von Theonus if you’re interested in work opportunities in the GRAND BUREAU DU RÉGISMONT.   • ─────────────────── • DIREWOLVES OF THE HINTERLANDS • ─────────────────── • IT WAS a chill, moonless night when the thunder of hooves fell across the lands of Ladyr, only the barest light from stars that peered through the clouds glinting off the company’s armor. The banner of red, white and black trailed behind the patrol of the SWORDS OF SAINT EMMA, the gilded plate of their Commandant leading the charge across the roads of the Petrine Highlands. The frost that still covered long stretches of the alpine region crunched under the hooves of their Mardonland steeds, the frigid weather only intensifying as they passed the lights of the Astoran Hold.   A single soldier removes his helmet as the company pauses upon a ridge, the Commandant pointing a gauntleted hand silently in the direction of a far-off glow on the plain of the DRUSCAN PLATEAU. The swordsman unhooks a spyglass from his belt, holding it to his eye as he sweeps the horizon. The warhorses of the Black Hills stamp and whinny, their riders alert as they await instruction.    “An encampment, sir. Several men bearing no colors I can see. Armed, with a few horses.” The soldier’s Auvergne accent sticks out in his words, as he lowers the spyglass once more. The Commandant nods, and raises a hand to signal the men behind. “We ride for Vallagne. Gather reinforcements.”     This was the tale recounted to me by Sir Clemens von Theonus, as we sat upon the balcony overlooking the Fairweather’s top floor. Rain drizzled against the tower-top outside, the candlelight providing some scarce warmth as we spoke over a bottle of gin. His manner was polite and his words well-chosen as he took me through each detail, with all the precision expected of a Petrine Knight.   Reinforcements were gathered at the Red Bastion of Vallagne upon the patrol’s return, the effort led by the Master of Blades, Commandant Ivy von Theonus, and Sir Clemens himself. They summoned a small task force of thirty men, including Swordsmen, Knights, and Squires alike.
			WAR BREWING IN THE PONTIFICAL STATES! EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH BANDIT-GOVERNOR   It is impossible not to notice the unrest in the Eastern lands these days, from the short-lived threat of Vinovia to the rumored illness of the Pontiff. Though the Vinovians have been seemingly vanquished at the battle of the Black Gate, a new threat to the stability of the Easterlands has appeared in the form of the BANDIT-GOVERNORS OF SALVO, also known as the followers of infamous outlaw MITCH MCCANON.   I began my investigation into McCanon not long before the outlaw’s takeover of the Salvoan government, when rumor reached by ear through the way of taverns and wanted posters of a bandit growing famous for his crimes. Most bandits which travellers like you and I run into on the roads are nameless, faceless, and don’t flaunt their identities. The tale of McCanon and Salvo intrigued me, as did its tumultuous origins.    Born from the ashes of the Robertine Crusade, the people of Salvo were once a vassal of Lurin, briefly an independent nation, and now are of the Pontifical States. The lands they rest upon went through a similar re-invention, having been originally the County of Ves, then the Free City of Venic, and then finally being given to the people of Salvo. These people and their lands have been subject to unstable change for as long as they’ve been, one could say.    And it seems outlaw Mitch McCanon agrees, as it was a year before now he and his army of outlaws stormed the gates of Salvo and STOLE possession of the lands from the existing government, claiming that the republican lands of the East had strayed from their original ideals. But how did we get here, from a former Senator of Salvo to an armed bandit deposing the government by force?   I travelled between many lands seeking the answer to this question, finding the first hints in the Kingdom of BALIAN. It was there that an arranged meeting with  a witness, who asked to be referred to only by the pseudonym GHOST for anonymity, provided me some background on who exactly Mitch McCanon is. According to several former Salvoans, McCanon was a former Senator of Salvo who had a nasty habit of robbing and stealing long before he left the settlement.	It was said that McCanon leveraged his position as a Senator to aid his robberies of other Salvoans, adding further unrest to turbulent times in Salvo’s history. Whether McCanon was exiled from Salvo after this or left voluntarily, GHOST did not know.   What we do know is that McCanon returned multiple times to Salvo to harass his former constituents, including, allegedly, multiple attempts on the life of Consul Elynora af Brasca and her advisors. The next steps McCanon took after leaving Salvo could be traced through a series of Balianese witnesses, who attested to the trail of robberies and attacks McCanon and his gang left along the roads of Aevos. From the western lands of Hyspia, to the ruins of the Midlands, to the eastern roads of Balian did McCanon shoot, rob, and ride his way through the lands unimpeded.    This included the taking of a Hyspian child as a hostage, refusing honorable duels, and attacking the wife of the Chancellor of the Pontifical Curia, among a long list of other crimes well-recorded during this time. According to interviewed witnesses, it was Lady Johanna Vuiller who was to thank for this record-keeping, as she compiled an extensive list of each of McCanon’s attacks upon her friends and acquaintances. This was for the purpose of presenting McCanon’s crimes to the throne of Balian, so they may set a price on his head and see justice done.   However, the Lady Vuiller’s good deeds did not go unpunished. McCanon discovered the impending price upon his head in Balian and tracked Lady Vuiller to her hold, breaking into her family’s keep and shooting the woman with his crossbow, before robbing her. He escaped before guardsmen could be summoned, and his bounty was formally set mere days later.   This was not the last time McCanon was reported at the Vuiller hold, however, as another witness attested that a second robbery occurred not long after the first. Allegedly, McCanon appeared outside the gates and began spewing angered insults at the Lady Vuiller over the amount of his bounty- At the time, it was set to 300 mina, which he deemed “too low”. It is to be noted, reader, that the Lady Vuiller had no influence over the exact price of his bounty. Despite this fact, the unstable and possibly inebriated McCanon continued to scream and bang on the gates before breaking into the home.   Continued on page 2.

	For they leapt from the rocky hills above the soldiers and ambushed them there, many in number and ferocious in their attack. As large as a full-grown man were they, and wise enough of animals to leave prey alive in order to lure more. Yet the swordsmen of the Commonwealth proved no easy prey, as they turned to meet fangs with steel.   Herr Theodemar was the first to spot the pack upon the high road, and his cry of battle lessened the effect of their ambush, as each Petran soldier quickly met the charge. A wolf broken off from the pack took the Master of Blades by surprise, but Sir Clemens had his spear readied and wounded the beast as it tore at the flesh of the Galken’s steed. The Master of Blades leapt from his wounded horse and into the fray with his men, directing from within the battle as the rest of the pack reached the Petran line.   The Trueblade Entrati slashed the throat of one of the man-sized wolves with a keen flourish, blood staining the frosted grasslands like spilled wine. Squire Relen, disarmed of his blade, hurled one of the beasts across the valley with naught but his bare hands, and it was rumored that it struck the treeline with a crack heard across the battlefield. Commandant Ivy faced down two wolves alone in defense of an injured man, and fended them both off at the end of her glaive, unwilling to let one of her regiment be preyed upon. Sir Clemens and Herr Theodemar fought side-by-side as several of the pack attempted to surround them, the camaraderie between knights of even two distant lands showing clear, as they became but a flurry of strikes and blood.     Silence soon fell upon the Hinterlands, as the last howl was hushed by the end of a spear. The pack of unnatural beasts which threatened the Commonwealth’s border laid strewn across the battlefield, and for a night, the valley shone red in the moonlight. Though some had been lightly injured, none were lost in the hunt. The soldiers took stock of what spears had been broken, what steeds were injured, and searched for any remaining signs of a living pack. With their quest done, they mounted and turned for home.   Note of the Author: The above story has been slightly dramaticized for reader enjoyment.	NEW MAYOR, NEW VALLANGE • ─────────────────── • CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 • ─────────────────── • CM: Something to attract trade and tourists, aye? Not a bad idea. On the topic of helpers, though- If someone reading this article wanted to throw their hat in the ring and apply to be part of your mayoral office, how should they reach out to you? What kinda work should they be expecting to do?   GA: By letter would be ideal. I plan on announcing a job listing as well soon. There is no specific thing that needs to be done, I will take any talent and apply it for the benefit of the city.  If a fisherman comes to me and says they want to work for me, I'll have them be the city fisherman. In general, I am looking for people to develop traditional festivities and to raise funds, experience in either is ideal.   CM: One last question for you, then. By the time your tenure as mayor has ended, what do you want people from outside Petra to think of when they think of Vallagne? What do you think this city's reputation should be? What should people travel here for?   GA: Well the city has a very multicultural reputation, more than any other human kingdom. I think that already gives us a unique reason to visit, but I would love to improve commerce through cultural wares. Not just… potions and metals you always see on sale. Petra should be the only place you can buy a crêpe from, the only place where you can see the uniqueness of the Petran people.   CM: And finally, is there anything else you’d like to state to the Petran people about your upcoming term as mayor?   GA: Life is too short to spend time on things you don't enjoy!   Needless to say, I am as curious as anyone how the young Auclair will fare as mayor. He seems to have plans not too grandiose nor too humble, but realistic of his station and helpful to the current needs of the city. If he will be able to execute them, and show the same capabilities in leadership as his famed mother, remains to be seen.   What is clear is that Vallagne has gained an amicable, friendly figure as its mayor who is unafraid to mingle with the citizenry- Nor is he afraid to offer them jobs. So if you have a trade to ply and would like to put yourself to work, perhaps the office of the Mayor is the place for you.
DIREWOLVES OF THE HINTERLANDS • ─────────────────── • CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 • ─────────────────── • It was not long after the deal was made that the Dame-Chancellor of the Commonwealth, Lady Amélie, arrived upon her own white steed. She extended the grace and kindness known to her toward the wounded Northerners, offering them sanctuary and healing within Vallagne. While the soldiers of the Commonwealth prepared to set out once more, she quickly organized the wounded and shepherded them back to the Royal City, where they would be treated under her supervision.   Several forward scouts were sent forth to track the movements of the pack, with the rest of the force following not far behind. The hunt consumed much of the day, with scouts uncovering the shredded and bloodied remains of deer, sheep, and an escaped alpine cow along their trail. The soldiers were led across the flatlands of the Druscan Plateau, down the ragged ridges of the Ladyran border, and out into the Northern Hinterlands. A blanket of cold fell as the sun began to set over the dark, jagged hills and patches of leafless trees, casting the path forward into darkness, as even the moonlight was shadowed by rocky outcroppings.    As the darkness obscured the vision of the soldiers and the trail of carcasses and tracks grew scarcer, the party re-grouped within a small valley. Several of their number produced alchemically treated lenses to see through the shadow, searching for the glowing signatures of heat that any wolves would give off under the effects of the potion. And so one spoke- “There, between those trees! I see three large figures, and they glow warm to my sight.”    And so the force pressed on quietly, some mounted, some on foot for the sake of stealth. They passed through the hilly underbrush until the bare treeline was in sight, and their quarry could be seen.   BUT ALAS- What emerged was not a pack of snarling wolves, but three stumbling deer, their coats bloodied and their limbs half-crippled. Their wounds showed clear signs of an attack by wolves, yet they had been left alive, contrary to all that nature’s instincts should command.   The reason for this mercy was made clear, as it was no mercy at all, but a TRICK of the clever Direwolves.
			CHAOS IN THE EAST: THE LAWLESS LANDS OF SALVO • ─────────────────── • CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 • ─────────────────── • The Lady Vuiller’s nephew was reported to have run for the city upon McCanon’s break-in, alerting the guards there of his entry. McCanon proceeded to search for the Lady Vuiller, who was four months pregnant at the time of the attack. When her nephew returned with several guards, McCanon injured the ten-year-old boy with a blasting potion, before fleeing the scene.   We follow McCanon’s movements next to the Pontifical States, where he launched his final and most devastating attack against the lands of Salvo, riding upon their gates as he had promised to when he was refused a sale of land. Though it has been difficult to find those who were present at the battle, one account alleges that McCanon and his gang of highwaymen laid siege to the gates of the senate building, assisted by a mad mage who summoned great walls of fire.    The witness GHOST claimed that this mage has darker connections than McCanon alone, believing him to be some form of undead. Though unconfirmed, is it possible that McCanon not only associates himself with lawbreakers, but with OCCULT creatures to achieve his dastardly end? Some witnesses seem convinced of this.   McCanon’s takeover of Salvo means the Holy Regent and its vassals have suddenly lost control of their roads, and large stretches of land which previously lay empty are now ruled by roving bands of riders that prey upon travellers, identifiable by their strange accents and brimmed hats. It has proven that the large amount of land controlled by the States is too much for its disconnected vassals to effectively control, McCanon easily taking advantage of the unguarded bridges and passageways.    To dig past the rumors and reach the truth, I then took my travels into the Pontifical States with a plan.	Upon my horse I travelled the vast roads of the Pontifical States, with the goal of my own robbery. And as diligent as a timepiece, McCanon did show himself, blocking my path just as I crossed the bridge out of the lands of Alba. McCanon held me at crossbow-point with an almost lazily casual drawl, claiming that there was a toll upon the road I traveled. There was another who rode at his side, a man he referred to several times simply as “John”, who then relieved me of the scarce few coins I had chosen to carry.   I identified McCanon quickly from the descriptions I had been given, a pale man with dark hair, a strangely foreign accent, and a teal bandana. One of those brimmed hats sat on his head, and that of his companion. Once I was sure of who I was speaking to, I put caution to the wind and announced myself as a member of the press, asking if I could pose a few questions. To my surprise, McCanon commanded his man to lead me to the lands of Salvo.   Continued on page 3.   • ─────────────────── • A CALL TO HIRE: SEARCHING FOR A SWEETS-MAKER • ─────────────────── • Do you find yourself skilled in the CONFECTIONARY arts, and are looking for somewhere new to ply your trade? CHAOS IN THE EAST:  THE LAWLESS LANDS OF SALVO • ─────────────────────────────────────────── • CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 • ─────────────────────────────────────────── • I was led past the lands of Ravenmire, and through the cherry blossom lined roads that wound towards the settlement of Salvo. A brightly colored town, yet its gates were barred, and every window I could see was shuttered. The emptiness of the streets was striking as I was brought towards the old Senate building, with only a few leering, shady-looking figures visible inside the abandoned homes. Some tables in the tavern still had old drinks and trinkets left out on them, signs of the old population leaving in a hurry, with no one bothering to clean up after.   I was escorted by McCanon and “John” to an office inside the battered Senate building, one which must have previously belonged to some Salvoan official. It had since been overtaken by McCanon for his own purposes, the desk covered in wanted posters, bounties, and what appeared to be several written death threats. The room smelled heavily of cigar smoke, and blackpowder.   McCanon asked of me what the press wanted with his people, and I told him honestly that I wished to uncover the truth, and have the truth be told. He scoffed when I mentioned I had spoken to several victims, alleging in his gruff tone that those claiming to be victims were traitors to their own land. McCanon claimed to be “sticking up for the little man” through his actions, a questionable line of thinking given how much money he’d stolen. Still, I moved on with a question.   When I asked what had motivated him to leave Salvo, and then take it over by force, he voiced distaste for the previous administration, quoted as saying- “They done made this place a consulate… Whatever the **** that means.” McCanon seemed angered at the removal of the President’s office, and about the rejected land deal that GHOST had also alluded to. He claimed that after his purchase of land was refused, he told Consul Brasca that she was improperly representing her people. When he was threatened in return, he promised he would return with an army. This threat turned out to not be an empty one, in the end.

McCanon then claimed that the roads of the Pontifical States were “For the people”, and that his banditry was somehow furthering this agenda. I attempted to question him on how he planned to govern Salvo now that the president had been deposed, but before he could answer, McCanon suddenly excused himself to greet a courier.   He returned to the room a minute later with a note, announcing we’d be finishing the interview at another time. As he passed the note across the table towards “John”, I caught a glimpse of what was written upon it. It seemed to be an unsigned tip-off, warning McCanon of a number of approaching, armed riders who planned to ambush him. When I requested to leave the city before any confrontation kicked off, I was allowed to walk away unharmed. McCanon, at this point, was likely too preoccupied with the approaching fight to bother much with me.   My questions about McCanon himself had been largely answered, but the future of  the conflict that now embroiled the Pontifical States remained uncertain to me. At first, I had assumed that McCanon’s hold over Salvo would be quickly wiped out by the Pontifical States’ superior crusading forces.  But the more time progressed, the more it seemed that the vassals of the States were struggling to make any progress in reclaiming their overtaken roads. The Battle of St. Daniel’s Crossing solidified these worries with the bloody defeat of many Alban soldiers, and so I set out towards one of the States’ foremost military settlements for answers on how the campaign was progressing.   Upon arriving in the city of Ravenmire I was allowed an interview with a local official who asked to remain anonymous. I asked after Ravenmire’s offer of housing Salvoan refugees, but it was revealed to me that Consul Brasca had rejected Ravenmire’s offer. It was confirmed that the Salvoans have chosen to abandon the Pontifical States and their former lands entirely, seeking to settle elsewhere. It seems that there will be no retaking of Salvo by its original government, leaving the fate of the land after McCanon is deposed a mystery.   The official confirmed under anonymity that the Pontifical States had been having difficulty securing the roads, as the lands of the States are so vast, if Ravenmire’s army effectively held one road there were still several others the bandits could use to route them. This official also revealed that Ravenmire had offered Alba a pact of mutual defense against the bandits, but Alba had declined such a union of forces for unknown reasons.   All this said, it seems the Pontifical States have begun organizing their vassals against the bandit threat in some way, though the exact details and level of success are still not clearly known. McCanon and his bandits have been spotted as far west as the gates of Haense, and the attacks on Alba seem to have only increased. Time shall tell how the States will handle this crisis, and if McCanon and his bandits will spread their terror to further lands.   As many details of the story remain murky, one thing is for certain- Not a single witness for this tale wished to speak outside of the safety of anonymity. If one thing only can be said about the bandit-governor MITCH MCCANON, it is that he is successful in striking fear within most that encounter him.

Explain why then did nearly the entire population of Salvo depart? The Former First Consul of Salvo Elynora af Brasca would remark to herself and to her advisors as they make plans for a renewed city for their people.
