Hart sets the missive down, a somber expression on his face. He recalled his first feast taking place in Balian. He remembered all the times heard John speak and interact with Therin. Another light of good had been snuffed out from this world.

The knight closes his eyes. He only hoped that the king was now at peace and that his memory was not twisted for the churches gain.

Jagobert, a Burgundian solder, spared a murmured prayer for the dead foe-king before a shrine of Horen in his Alban house.

 

"He has died as a king, and there was no cowardice, no surrender . . . Only the shadow of a man who would not accept defeat."

 

He may have fought for the King of Burgundy, but he recognized the value of a now dead foe. 

 

The dead deserved as much.

Edvard Lother Ludovar sat at his home in isaakev as the news of the defeat of Balian was being shouted from the rooftops. He'd remember meeting John II the first time, it was when he returned the Sword of John I, Unwavering, to him those many years ago. It seemed fitting that he was just like his forebearer, Unwavering in the face of total and utter defeat. Good King John was more than just a king, he was a good man who loved his people and was willing to fight for them until his last breath. Edvard felt only sadness that the world had not lost just a king but a good and humble man.
