Soulstones & Soulbinds

Preface

It's said once a soul turns five, their worldly connections hold the power to grow strong enough to bind themselves to both specific items and places–a force so strong, nothing yet is known to overcome it. This act is often done without the soul’s awareness; a connection that's simply made as an attachment grows. 

 

Beings without a soul of their own gain these powers passively from their creator upon their birth.

Soulstones

Often described as a ‘glowing rock’, beings are able to call upon means of traveling to bound locations called a Soulstone. Bound locations are always notable structures, such as a city, lair or otherwise used place. Often, the being ends up bound to places they frequent–but, not necessarily.

 

The act of traveling requires keen focus, necessitating them to stand or sit still.

• Used as an IRP excuse for soulstones. They will always abide by the current accepted server rules.

Soulbinds

Similar to how beings are able to form links to locations, they are also able to form links to items. These form at random, often with items the person has found an emotional attachment to–however not necessarily. Some items, however, hold too many magical connections elsewhere, preventing any one person from forming attachments. This link brings the item to passively return to the person after some time–often appearing suddenly in a pocket or around their home.

 

Its return always takes time, meaning it won't snap back to the person instantly.

Explanation

Spoiler

At this moment in time, there’s an awkward gray area between acknowledging soulstones and soulbinds and pretending like they don’t exist at all IC, despite them impacting character decisions, even if in very minor ways–like a bandit deciding not to steal a fancy ring, purely because its soulbound.

 

This lore explanation gives people an easier and more widely known way to reference these strange phenomena in character and adds a bit of flavour to it.

Thank God. I’ve always been discontent with the status of monk-related lore on the server ever since they’ve been relegated to this weird pseudo-irp-OOC role and never really mentioned since they’re off the map ENTIRELY now, and have been removed from lore such as Tawkin. This is great.

 

I’m also glad to see someone more reputable than me decided to write soulbind lore before I could.

what about the humble soulless construct made by fellow construct. i get its in the name of the item, but theres still a good amount of soulless stuff that would just be kinda left out w/ this

the lotc realism nerds who will say "OH BUT IT'S NOT AN IN DEPTH HYPER EXPLAINED MAGIC SYSTEM" will be crying at this.

 

I personally appreciate the move to try to make lore and explanation- LotC lore does not need to be 10 pages of over explained waffle like most lore is, this is concise and to the point and still flavourful.

 

Making a move to give lore to systems on LotC (Astrology, Soulbinds...) is a move in a good direction as currently there's so much unexplained nonsense
