[✗] [Amendment] Anorum, aka Glass is Not Invisible

Previous redline:

Anorum is equal to Ferrum in its strength, toughness, and weight. Anorum is intended to be an aesthetic difference, meaning it can be sharpened similarly as well.

Armor cast from Anorum possesses a smokey translucency not unlike the raw form of Anorum crystals.

New Redline:

Anorum is equal to Steel in its strength, toughness, and weight. Anorum is intended to be an aesthetic difference, meaning it can be sharpened similarly as well.

Armor cast from Anorum may be two or one-way transparent, or merely opaque. Transparency is achieved immediately before the cooling process, where the shaper will apply salt to the side desired to be clear before it is beaten into shape.
Armor cast from Anorum made this way is transparent, not invisible. Light still shines and is distorted by it, just like any other glass or crystal. (If someone came up to you wearing a suit of glass, you would know it.) Players cannot treat Anorum as having any less visibility than they would steel and must be equally visible on their skin like any other armor.

Reason for change: Anorum is a material so abundant and so accessible but so rarely used, while going on four years without any adjustment, I feel it could have a little makeover with the times. As it is today, practically nobody roleplays the difference between ferrum and steel, and with the latter being so widespread, it’s no longer a genuine balance concern to keep this material below average. The typical player is no more likely to nerf themselves with a subpar material than they are to seriously enter battle naked. The entire function of Anorum as a lorepiece is to simply have an aesthetic alternative to the baseline combat material. At one point in time that might’ve been ferrum, but this is no longer the case.

The second change is the initial purpose for this amendment. While scrolling through the material encyclopedia, I was surprised to discover there wasn't a single material that could pull off a genuinely “bald-faced” look. Technically, you could just say it's super finely perforated, but that's silly. After speaking with Evonpire about the matter of translucence, I discovered the sole reason armor couldn't be that way was because of an (at the time) legitimate concern people would powergame the material to be invisible. Fortunately, Descendants are not birds, and glass is not invisible. And I think if anyone tried that in today's crp environment, we would all collectively kill them with hammers (irl).

This change is a simple one, and I believe a harmless one, that makes a wonderfully cool yet underutilized material a little more popular.

This would have been so good for Hypernaut Helmets. +1

Recently made an Anorum weapon so the changes are actually pretty interesting, a couple details however:

1. Changing the property from ferrum to steel, would that not change the melting point as well for working with it? If so, you may need to amend that redline too

2. Possibly change it that salt is to be added whilst the material is being smelted to allow for proper distribution for those seeking less opaque options, requiring thorough distribution of salt to the crystalline composition of Anorum (for RP flavour)

3. Id hope the answer is no but seeing how simple of a material it is, for my vweapon I added kuila to it - I'm assuming you're thinking the use of mundane salt and nothing that would necessarily counteract other materials that are embedded or inlaid?

Otherwise, +1

I think the issue with the invisible armor is that it can’t really be shown on the person’s skin like normal armor is represented. People could roleplay having their armor on when it’s convenient and roleplay not having it when its inconvenient. It also opens the door to helms having no gaps because people will just fill the gaps of their helm with anorum.

you can already do this by wearing a gas mask under your helmet

They still need to breathe, but I think semi-transparent should be fine, like where it's still somewhat hard to see throughthe lens. I also think skinning it would be fine :D

That’s what it currently is in lore. If u can skin clear, translucent armor then be my guest but i fear this might lead to cases, even if niche, of people walking around in normal skins and once attacked emoting having the translucent clear armor on top for convenance.

Not to mention powergaming, but I see where the concern exists. Added "Must be visible on the player's skin" to avoid any case of this. Though, I imagine if someone tried that anyways, a mod would quickly shoot them

This lore has been denied.

This went to an internal vote and did not pass.
