After being a donator doe a couple of months now, I see a flaw in the system. I think there should be limits in both the number of different items you can have in a single shop and a limit on the number of shops you can have active at one time: This would cause shop owners to carefully choose what they have to buy/sell and where they placed their shops. Of course they could RP a shop selling anything they want - but that has is own built in limitations. Here are my suggestions:

All shops should be limited to a maximum of 21 different inventory items to either buy or sell (3 pages).

There would still be no limit on the maximum quantity for each inventory item.

The number of shops allowed should be a function of your donation level as so...

Steel VIP - 1 shop max

Gold VIP - 2 shops max

Diamond VIP - 3 shops max

Bedrock VIP - 4 shops max

This would make the RP Merchant much more feasible because there would not be a million shops for people to choose from and it would force each shop to be a bit more specialized.

I would like to see shops be more specialized myself. Too be honest i got out of the merchant business recently to give new blood a go at making a name for themselves and i had many other things to do but i personally think that the whole autoshop thing takes away from rp. I'm a hypocrite of course because i had an autoshop but i no longer do and will never again. No autoshops would force everyone to rp much much more if you couldn't get whatever you wanted whenever you wanted. Gotta think in olden times were there wal-marts in every town?

(( I agree, as a blacksmith IC I find competing with the shops that sell mostly everything quite hard. I think this ties in well with the map wipe as everything is much more spread out, it adds to the RP as you would have to specifically make the journey to a specialised merchant that sells what you are looking for instead of just walking a couple of steps and buying from an olden day Wal-mart, as moondoggy said. ))

I feel that they should be limited, but not removed entirely - People still need to buy the odd loaf of bread in an emergency, and they can't do that if the shopkeeper or one an employee of them isn't there. Perhaps if it was so that shops were limited to a type of item. Say each city or town had a general store that sells your generic items that you may need, like bread, wooden tools and planks and things, but at a relatively high price so that the player-owned shops will be favoured.

Then you could have more specialised stores, like Blacksmiths who could sell Tools and other metal-work, construction shops that will have wooden logs, cobblestone and other building materials, Valuables stores that have Diamonds, Gold and any other rare items and then food stores, to name a few.

That would make more jobs for people as the shop owners can't be there all the time and would need to hire assistants, and it also makes it more RP since there will be an actual person behind the counter.

Maybe the town leader should regulate the shops ? Have like one food store or on blacksmith

Or we could class shops as wood, stone, stuff like that and when you sell things they can only be based off the thing you classed it as?

yes auto shop does drop some rp but back when we had no trade npcs and no auto shop it was dang enar impossible to buy anything i do agree limited but steel vip should get 3 in my opinion im only donator cuase of flefal i dont have moeny to donate more just so i can have more shops and seeing as my rp is the royal merchant ( formaly merchant prince) i need a few shops also because i have sevral shops in sevral towns, the way you propose it to limiting and if a miner wants to sell stuff, he would sell to a merchant who has economic experience and knowledge and not open his own shop if u care about rp at all

I agree on the item limitations... But I feel that the shop limitations should be a tad expansive then what you mentioned.

In my opinion: # of shops = # of NPCs for each VIP.

I think the shop system is great as it is now. As for limitations, there already is one. I think native said you can have up to 8 shops, but so far, no player has made that many.

I enjoy my couple shops, not for the zomg minas they generate, but because keeping them stocked, seeing what's popular for sale and trying not to run out of inventory, is a fun distraction.

I used to play this game called 'federation' back on AOL, which was billed as 'adult space fantasy'...... no, it wasn't intergalactic porn, but it was like being an adult, you got a crappy job, saved up some money, bought a stake in a company, worked in the company, and fast forward a couple of months later, and suddenly you're a planet owner and you're running the economy of an entire planet.

That was kind of fun, and I find that shops in MC are kind of like that, only there's blocky graphics and stuff to go along with it (fed was entirely text-based). I found it kinda fun.
