The Origins of Broomsticks utilised as a focus for flight are heavily debated among scholars of the world. Given how often murky history can be, and the difficulty in bookkeeping from land to land. However, it is commonly believed that the majority of the known derivations of the Broomstick were from Rasmot’s designs, after his chest spilled the plunder within onto the world, various enchanted Broomsticks found themselves nestled within homes, castles, and taverns. Whatever their original intention was when Rasmot had imbued them, when common folk attempted to clean their dwellings, havoc was unleashed as the Broomsticks veered off. Some were able to wrangle them by digging their heels into the ground, while others were carried off through the skies in brief flight. 

 

Various Wizards and Mage Guilds quickly stepped in and were able to bring the matter to a conclusion swiftly, and thereafter began attempting to study the enchanted object to get better insights into Rasmot’s Mastery of Alteration. As these Voidal Mages got closer to understanding this specific enchantment, they were able to tame the ‘wild’ unpredictability, so that later iterations of Broomsticks were able to be directed rather than flying off with little care or regard. Eventually, this knowledge of enchanting was passed down through various Mage lineages and persisted rather quietly.

 

Those who are more studied in the esoteric and deep knowledge of the world and beyond have heard tell that Cadmium had a Witchflight that pioneered their proliferation among those learned of Blood Magic, while originally they were meant to merely serve as a tool for travel across the realms within her castle’s chambers, which housed gateways to various worlds, these Broomsticks would aid in their exploration in her search of the Mad Wizard Rasmot, those from the Cadmium bloodline took much liking to the implement as a way to showcase their deft skills that they are partial too, from performative displays across the Night Kingdom of Hazmstadt’s skies, for sport to push and test the limits of their ability to control themself and their Broomsticks, engaging in contest against one another, and their inconspicuous design allowed them to be nestled anywhere without drawing attention as scouts from Hazmstadt explored other worlds that contained civilizations. It is faintly whispered that some of the more bold Siliti riders would engrave among the handle’s end bastardisations of their Signates to denote ownership and give flourish to their Broomsticks’ usually ornate designs.

 

As stories started to resurface within the current era, word started spreading quickly throughout the land and soon after that House Mages had managed to discover a way to recreate the fabled Broomstick, along with reintroducing the eccentric personalities that was told of stories from Rasmot’s original Broomsticks and with it, this generation of Broomsticks across various magics were able to utilise murmured advancements with some creative thinking in their respective magics. 

Explanation

For clarity and to reduce redundancy, it will be mentioned here that the definition of a Broomstick encompasses literal Broomsticks, Staff, or anything else listed that would be in a similar fashion to a magical flying Broomstick. A full list will be included under the Creation section.

Broomsticks have predominantly found their usage among various individuals as a low-maintenance means of transportation, merely requiring to be enchanted once and from there passively sustains itself. These modern enchantments are derived from four magical arts: House Magic, Shamans, Voidal Magic, and Blood Magic, along with Demi-djinn capable of producing these. They emit a repulsive force that allows them to fly.

 

The ‘original Voidal enchant’ was made by Rasmot, invoked into various Broomsticks for the purposes of cleaning his tower so he could save his gold, though given how often chaotic he’d designed them, there were numerous variations upon the base intention, which is often the individuality or ‘personalities’ that each Broomstick possesses. These enchantments were ultimately reserved-engineered by Voidal Mages shortly after they had managed to come into possession of the Broomsticks and passed down through various individuals, often rarely used. In time, as Cadmium began her search for the same Mad Wizard that had created them, she learned his Broomsticks. When she needed a means for quick travel and low maintenance, given the nature of the extra-planar, Cadmium ended up recreating them through Blood Magic, perhaps a bid to draw him out or merely enter his headspace to help her deduce how to locate him. House Magery’s recreation came upon the lands of Azuras, as stories about the original Broomsticks started return to ear, some House Mages gathered and devised a way to recreate them with their own magic, and found success, and the Shamanic revision was founded much the same way. Which brings us to the modern Broomstick; it is this generation that encompasses the benefits derived over the years from the various arts of magic, as well as the quirks that had existed from Rasmot’s original Broomsticks. 

 

Ultimately, while the process and functions are standardised across the various magics in some form to receive the same end product, the way it is specifically created and powered is by their respective magical source from what is essentially a mixture of spells that are already wholly capable of being able to enchant a Broomstick with the ability to fly, transmutate their design with magical elements, or otherwise grant a form of individuality to a Broomstick. 

 

Though a rather peculiar effect that has lingered throughout all generations and iterations of the Broomstick is their loathing of water, mages and scholars are uncertain as to why the Broomsticks have such an adverse reaction to being soaked, even with the modern generation that haven’t been imbued with personality still seem to possess this quirk.

 

“A Broom is not a Mop! Mops are made with yarn, and Brooms are made with stiff fibres! Brooms brush and Mops… Mop!” - Rasmot the Mad, attempting to explain the difference between a Broom and a Mop to some unfortunate soul, whom he managed to commandeer into helping clean his Tower instead of keeping hire of the Maid in a bid to save his coin.

 

Appearance, Personality & Creation

This section covers the appropriate Appearances that a Broomstick may possess, how the Personality functions to a degree, and the Creation processes and the relevant magics that may enchant them.

Appearance and Personality

The appearance of a Broomstick is wildly varied; notably, however, the ‘handle’ of all Broomsticks must be made of either wood or metal and be materials that can hold an enchantment. Broomsticks made of ST Metal require [2] ingots of the metal to be submitted in their creation

 

They can be made to have ‘seats’ mounted to them, foot rests, or the Broomstick may be designed in a way that allows a user to mount their heels into the handle to stand upright when flying, though these are merely optional and are not required. 

 

Broomsticks can take various forms, and the exhaustive list is as follows: They can be literal Broomsticks, Staffs, Branches, Canes, Umbrellas, Rolling Pins, Giant Ladles, Musical Instruments or Magic Carpets. 

 

They can be tailored to the creator's wishes, but must be identifiable as these included forms. When the Broomstick is enchanted with a magical flair, it can be imbued through the material, such as an icy design, or to grant a trail effect that follows behind the rider, and give a ‘sound’ effect that might accompany this trail. This Magical flair can be emitted passively at all times, or when in flight, there is no state they are required to be in and can be freely altered between these two states.

 

Personality is mostly determined by the magical imbuing of the Broomstick. However, players may opt to have the material determine traits with the Broomstick’s personality in a minor way, such as an Oak Broomstick being slightly stubborn. Regardless of the Personality or lack thereof, they may wordlessly obey their Owner’s wishes or need spoken commands before beckoning an instruction.

 

Redlines of Appearance and Personality:

• The Material that makes the Broomstick must be one that can be enchanted or has no adverse effects when being enchanted.

• In no way can the Broomsticks appearance or personality give a player a mechanical IRP advantage, for example, the trails of the Broomstick could not ‘blind’ someone, nor could it be directed to shove someone hard enough in the back who is overlooking a ledge to plummet to their doom, or have a trail spit out a specific pattern of Symbols to meaningfully communicate. 

 

• Broomsticks may have the following particle trails: Beams, Mists, Dust, Wisps, Light, Symbols (such as Runes, Music Notes, etc), Elemental Trails (Embers, Sparks, etc).
• Broomsticks may have the following sound effects: Whistles, Howls, Chimes, Brushing Sounds, Musical Instrumentals, Elemental Effects (sizzling of flames, crackling of lightning, etc.)

 

Creation

Creation of a Broomstick allows one to perform a ritual or enchanting process that determines if the Broomstick is merely a simple flying implement, or if it possesses additional qualities, such as magical aesthetics coursing through the material of the Broomstick, or the emitting of trail effects and sounds, and if the Broomstick has a personality to it. Broomstick creation is freeform in the conduction (in line with the magic used), nor do they require any additional knowledge aside from possessing a MA in the respective magics, effectively allowing one to self-teach themselves the creation if they wish.

House Magic

A [MA] Housemage or [CA] Demi-Djinn may, in a freeform manner, infuse their mana into a Broomstick.

Broomsticks created through House Magic are often mundane in their appearances, not really able to leverage elemental effects or overly magical effects like those from Voidal Magics and Blood Magic or alter the physical design of the Broomstick, but they may still benefit from trails, sounds and personalities.

Voidal Magic 

A [MA - Transfiguration] Voidal Mage may imbue a Broomstick for flight.
Broomsticks can be imbued similarly to Active Acranium aesthetic effects, provided they have the relevant MAs. Should a Void Mage who is versed in Illusion take part, they have greater design over the aesthetic looks, and may easily give it a wide variety of trials and sounds to be emitted. 

Blood Magic

A [Lesser] Blood Mage may craft a ritual in a similar vein to Invent to enchant a Broomstick

Broomsticks made with Blood Magic may make use of the following Runes to determine material appearance or personality, along with any trails or sounds.
Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Dark, Light, Metal, Lightning.

Shamanism

A [MA] Shaman can invoke the Spirits to instil the faintest sliver of power in a Broomstick. 

Broomsticks made by Shamans can either come as mundane implements or otherwise imbued with an appearance and personality in line with the Spirit called upon.                                      

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

Unique Interactions

In some cases, individuals with unique magical influence may aid the Crafter in the creation of the Broomstick and infuse it with their peculiar flares of magic.

 

Voidal Mages

Voidal Mages may assist one enough in Broomstick creation with a circling ritual, for example, the Mage with Transfiguration may get a Mage who knows Fire Evocation to enchant it with a temper, or otherwise embery design.

 

Demi-Djinn 

Demi-Djinn are capable of producing a Broomstick, in line with a free-form ritual in the same vein that House Magery is capable of. They may also leverage their magic in any ritual to alter the Broomstick to appear in line with any of their forms.

 

Seer

Seers that assist in a ritual may use their casting tells freely to imbue the Broomstick to give it specific physical and magical effects related to their casting tell and mixed with any of the appearance changes imbued by the magics.

 

Redlines of Creation:

• Creation cannot be performed in combat and has no set emote count, though it should be at least 3.

• Broomsticks made from mundane materials are player-signed, requiring the description to list which magic was created and to whom it is bound. Players may only craft [3] Broomsticks every [3] Months.
• For lore interactions, a Broomstick is considered a T3 Magic Spell and an Enchanted Item.
• Additional Magics may be added through amendments.
• It is considered metagaming to infer that a Broomstick is infact a magical flying Broomstick as one unless it is obviously magical in nature, aswell which specific magic was used to produce it simply by ‘looking’ at it, and requires either being informed directly, reasonable deduction in RP, or using a magical ability of some form to determine what Magic archetype it is (i.e., Voidal Feeling) [As a note, Voidal Feeling, Seer Appraisal or similar abilities will not reveal the identity of the owner unless OOC consent is granted.]
• Broomsticks can only be created from materials that can be enchanted, and can not possess any functional enchantments or alchemy treatments besides what is outlined in this lore piece. Alchemical cosmetics are allowed, such as Warforging.

Functions

This outlines the functions of a Broomstick more concisely, while the more flavourful additions to what is possible are covered across the lore piece; they will be contained here for ease of access. Abilities that cover more combative functions are explained in greater detail.

Besom’s Bond [Passive] - [Non Combative]

Broomsticks are bound to a singular owner at a time. The owner may pass it down to a person that they wish, this can be done in a free-form manner, such as simply instructing the Broomstick that they are no longer the owner and that the individual receiving it will be from therein, or perform a small ritual that can flair the magical aesthetic the Broom is imbued with. With OOC consent, an individual might be able to change the owner without going through disenchanting it entirely.

 

Demi-Djinn are an exception as they may lend a Broomstick in their possession to any of their Contractors for a duration of their choosing before the Broomstick would ultimately attempt to seek them out again.

 

Redlines: 

• Changing Owners puts the Broomstick on a [3] Month cooldown before it can be changed again.

Personification [Passive] - [Non Combative]

Spoiler

Broomsticks may passively float around to demonstrate their personality (or lack thereof), for example, by being literally pushy toward their owner, floating gracefully in the air, or shyly tucking away until beckoned to fly. The owner can also direct it to brush, float away, or come towards them in preparation for flight. It is up to the player's discretion how the Broomstick acts during Roleplay, if it passively and innately understands what the owner desires, or needs verbal command.

 

Redlines: 

• While Broomsticks may be fearful of those who have committed hostile actions against their owner, attempting to use this to infer certain information, such as an individual who is masked, disguised, etc., or someone who had killed you and revived from counts as metagaming.
• To reiterate a redline above, Broomsticks by themselves are unable to be used combatively with this, such as directing them to sneak up on another player and shove them over a ledge they might be looking over.

Casting Implement [Passive] - [Combative]

Broomsticks may be used as a Casting Implement; however, they are unable to function as a Casting Implement while being ridden. It would require the rider to possess a second Implement to use while upon the Broomstick to cast from instead of their Broomstick.

For it to function as a Casting Implement, all prerequisites must be fulfilled and listed in the description. For example, Seer - Sow Fallacy requires the Seer to, before or after the Creation of the Broomstick, sow the Broomstick so that it might function as a Seer Casting Implement in their required spells. Should the Broomstick be covered in Auric Oil or any abjuring effect, it is unable to function as a casting tell for the duration of combat.

Bardmancy - Instrument Entwinement 

 

Redlines:

• Broomsticks that also function as a Casting Implement cannot be used as a Casting Implement while flying at the same time, as two magical effects can’t be channelled through the Broomstick at the same time. 

Hover [Active] - [Combative & Non-Combative]

The most basic use of the Broomstick comes in the form of its hover, which allows them to, as the name would suggest, hover over land or sea. Riders may sit upon their Broomstick or stand upon it in an upright position. 

 

Non-Combative Use

A Broomstick Rider may simply use a Broomstick as a re-flavoured means to float around, functionally as a horse or boat in a non-combative situation.

 

Combative Use

A Broomstick Rider may use a Broomsticker as a reskinned horse and follow all the normal rules regarding it. While taking a combative action, they may move [8] meters or purely focus on flying away or towards something, giving them [12] meters of movement.

 

Dismounting the Broomstick that also functions as a Casting Implement requires [2] Emotes to substitute for equipping it, the first emote simply being a dismount and holding it still, while the second emote, in place of drawing a weapon, is waiting for the magical energies within the Broomstick to stabilise itself before it can help a magic properly channel their respective magic.

 

Forcible Dismounts

Being hit by anything that would normally dismount a person will dismount the rider and cause damage that would amount to the same as being dismounted from a horse (basically, to say, you aren’t able to lessen any damage). Being dismounted will leave a character prone, requiring [1] emote to stand up.

Being forcibly dismounted in any form causes the hover part of the enchantment to destabilise for the duration of combat and cannot be used again to hover. 

 

Auric Oil, Thanium or any other abjuring effects cause the Broomstick to stop functioning for the duration of combat and is equivalent to the horse being felled/badly injured. Requires it to be cleaned off or mended once combat has ended. Additionally, it can not be used as a casting implement if afflicted by any of these for the rest of the combative encounter.

 

Boomsteel's Thunderclap resonates deep within the Broomstick’s ‘soul’ and reminds them of the hatchet or pickaxe, thus it will forcibly cast their rider off, unable to hover again as it shivers too much until comabt ends. However, it still may function as a Casting Implement.

 

Redlines:

• Defer to all rules/lore regarding horses in standard combat. Such as their movement speed, they hover at a height that allows another person to hit them with melee weapons if they are within range, equivalent to if the player were on a normal horse. Any changes to the standard rules or lore, regardless of what is written here, shall be referred to instead.
• Requires a player to have a horse whistle with a horse to use in combat, in addition to a Broomstick item.
• Broomsticks are unable to benefit from any form of armour.
• They cannot be used as a boat reskin in a combative situation. 
• While not physically a horse, players may ‘strike’ at the legs, which in this case would be the magical energies keeping the Broomstick afloat to dismount a horse, effectively to say that anything that would normally apply to a horse applies to the Broomstick and is up to the players to explain how the attack affects, flavourfully, should it land.

 

Flight [Active] - [Non Combative | Event Combative]

Broomsticks can fly high across the sky in flight, given how this can often be a dangerous thing, as one might plummet to their doom, it is rarely used unless they’ve greater focus or the situation calls for it. This can be used to travel great distances, overlook the lands, and in extreme circumstances, may be used to chase, fight against greater foes, or traverse dangerous terrains.

 

This means simply that at an ET’s discretion, players may use the Broomstick to fly beyond a Hover, in a freeform manner, doing so obviously can invite dire consequences should they fall. Players may use the Broomstick freely in any narrative post, provided they are not attempting to goad some advantage out of it. Finally, it can be used to reskin the Soulstone mechanic or used as a flavourful way to depart a roleplay scene before Soulstoning or log off. 

 

Redlines:

• It is to the ET’s discretion if you may use the Broomstick with greater freeformity than you can normally during an event.
• While you may freely use this in any narrative posts, you cannot attempt to gain some advantage over players with it, such as saying you witnessed a friend’s murder high above the air or count troops.
• The SS flavour side of this still adheres to normal rules; failure to do so may result in punishment from either or both ST and Moderation. It is not flavourful to abuse lore to flee RP you do not wish to engage with via SSing.

General Redlines

Trade offer:  you get to ride a slim stick - you deal with Hawkeye Archers who can shoot your Broomstick/Staff directly.

 

Broomsticks are open lore that anyone can create, so long as they have the prerequisite magics required as outlined in Creation. 

 

Outside of what is listed within this lore piece, Broomsticks are unable to provide any additional combative advantage than what the item would usually possess, as with its durability. ST Material-made Broomsticks are considered a Light Polearm, which is a blunt staff.

 

If any of the magics that create a Broomstick are shelved, they will be considered legacy items. Shelving of this lore piece would nullify any existing Broomsticks unless otherwise announced.

Broomsticks have been in witchcraft across various cultures, and within modern media, they’ve become a mainstay staple that the moment you see someone with a pointy hat and a broomstick, you think Witch. 

 

The past year, I’ve been playing a witch-based persona and have been having an enjoyable experience doing so, using a mixture of a character focused on Alchemical and Blood Magic lore for functional form. For a while, I had been thinking about making some lore regarding something more directly witch-focused to help promote the RP and recently was just thinking it would be cool to have a Broomstick to fly around on to mess around with IRP. 

 

After thinking about it for a few days, there came a matter of how to make this manifest. One reckless and long-winded way to attempt this would be some form of Witch FA or MA, to also include other abilities and functions that could help promote that type of RP. The second idea that I had would be doing a simple MArt through BM and calling it a day. Another option would be to make an addition to any lore piece to include them in the already existing magics of LotC. However, to me, all of these posed an issue by way of being overly gatekeeping and taxing for what is basically meant to be a reskinned mount for something quite simple and widespread within the fantasy genre. I briefly remembered the Chrono-Scribe lore piece that was accepted some months ago, which ultimately inspired this lore piece’s design, as I think that it made the most sense to be applied in this way. 

 

While open to discovery, it requires the players to possess an MA to use an ‘enhanced form’ of spells that already exist within their respective magics, which I feel reasonably justifies the ability for a Mage of some description to imbue it with the ability to fly around. I also believed that having this be open to multiple magics was for the best, as it would allow people from different styles and flavours of RP to utilize this lore piece, rather than having players lament that what is basically a flavourful RP tool was locked behind something that might overtly go against their character, if it were only Voidal or Blood Magic based, and gives opportunity for those within the various communities to hopefully obtain them even if they do not possess a MA in any of the required magics.

 

As most of the bones and functions of this lore piece started coming together, I knew I wanted to add more to this in the form of flavour that people could utilize without having to constantly amend or add additions, while hopefully ensuring none of the functions of the Broomsticks were just ‘slop’ bloat for the sake of it and making it more than a lore piece post to say ‘You can pretend horse is stick’ and without making them a required ‘Swiss Army Knife’. I also wanted them to be something that can be included in RP to help demonstrate a character in a way that I feel can be lacking, as I feel how a character treats an item that might be ‘mundane’ to a degree can be used to showcase certain traits about them, are they practical with it, is it a treasured personal relic or merely a tool that can be easily forgotten. As such, I designed this to be as customizable as I felt made sense to give players a wide variety of flavours to work with and make them as important or unimportant to their roleplay, that might hopefully have it branch in unexpected ways, such as a Coven relic passed down from generation to generation, performers attempting to use these in displays of finesse, to being a part of a groups identity and more. I decided on an ST signage purely because I felt it might end up saving some headache, given that some of these items might be made out of ST materials anyway or otherwise require an ST signature and hopefully as a benefit make it so their creation isn’t spammed. I do not mind changing this to a Player Signed item and adjusting the lore to account for it.

 

I am hoping that this piece goes over well at least in terms of design and might inspire more lore pieces to follow suit to make the world of LotC more lively, and in regards to this lore piece specifically, that it may be easily updated over time to add more additions that make sense, such as new features, or other magics that can be reasonably suggested in crafting these.
