As someone very serious about this matter, it would highly effect me in two ways, one negative, one positive.

Great idea, perhaps you could talk to the admins and arrange you get a % of all donations to fund the programming? i have no idea of the income compare to server costs so i suppose you'd have to discuss it with... just a suggestion but really great idea

How would having a separate client effect our ability to update our version of Minecraft as Mojang introduces new items/play dynamics? Would be have to be stuck in one specific version of Minecraft for a long time, or would updating be relatively trivial?

I'm a Mac user as well, so I hope that this wouldn't effect my ability to play the game. As long as it's still Java, I assume it won't.
