I had a thought once yesterday that a neat way to rework summons on LotC is to make it a magic that has some basic comparisons across all magics which could do "summoning" (IE naz, void, necro, mystic, and even cleric oddly). But the thought died when I realized that voidal has its own slot version for summoning, and the other magics have it as an in built ability to some extent.
I think it is a shame tbh. Summoners are one of my favorite classes to play in TTRPG and RPG games. It is just such a shame LotC has such a hate boner against the idea of a summoning magic
