HALLOWEEN HAS COME.

And so has the time for spooky competitions! This Halloween, we're excited to offer you a wide variety of competitions that will test your skills in various creative 'arts' and allow you to show your ability. Each competition's winner will be announced on the 31st of October 2012 and their reward granted straight after. Voting will be done via public poll. Entries will be submitted privately.

CATEGORIES

- Short-Story - write a spooky / horror themed short story.

- Poetic - write a poem with a spooky-theme.

- Arty-farty - create a digital or handmade piece of art with a spooky-theme.

- Musical - create a piece of original music that gives a spooky or eerie feel.

RULES

Rules may seem irritating, but they are required. There's only a few general rules, each category has it's own specifics.

  1. All work submitted must be original and created by yourself - the usage of stock art, or works you have permission / licensing to use is permitted.
  2. You must not make any other member of the community aware of which work is your own (Exception: Musical - as it should be uploaded to SoundCloud or YouTube).
  3. Your work must stick to the theme given - Christmas style works are not applicable for the competition, wait a couple of months for that.
  4. The Forum and Server Rules both apply to your works - keep them appropriate.
  5. There may only be one entry submitted per user per category.

THE COMPETITIONS

Entries to each Competition should be sent via a Private Message to my forum account. They will remain stored until the public polls are put up and voting begins. The entry with the most votes from each category wins, the runner up (one runner up) will receive a small gift of congratulations.

All entries must be submitted by Tuesday the 25th of October at 9 PM (GMT+0). Voting begins on the 25th at 10 PM (GMT+0) and ends on the 30th. Winners revealed on the 31st.

Times are approximate, and may change.

The competitions are listed below under the Spoiler Tags in order to keep things neat.

Short-Story

Your task is to write a short story that is either Halloween-based, is spooky to read or is a horror piece. All work in your entry must be done by yourself. All entries will be checked for plagiarism.

Be creative in your piece and show your ability to write. Entries should be no more than six hundred words and should be private messaged to myself with the subject '[Halloween] [CW] - <yourname>'.

Poetic

Your task is to write a poem that is themed around horror, Halloween or 'spooky-ness'. All work in your entry must be entirely original, and all work will be checked for plagiarism.

Be creative with your piece and ensure that you make use of poetic techniques, which you have likely learnt through your school years. Entries have a maximum length of ten stanzas.

Entries should be sent in a simple Private Message to myself under the title of '[Halloween] [P] - <yourname>'

Arty-Farty

Your task is to create an image that is themed around either Halloween, horror or a general 'spooky' mood. All work in your entry should be by yourself (stock images / images you have permission to use may be used in the work). You can create this image any way you wish - by hand or digitally.

There is no maximum size for the images, just be decent.

Entries should be uploaded to an image sharing website such as imgur or Photobucket.

Entries should be submitted to myself via Private Message under the title of: '[Halloween] [G] - <yourname>'.

Musical

Your task is to create a creepy or spooky piece of music. All work in your entry should be entirely yourself.

It is your decision whether you record via real-life instruments, sing or use a digital composition studio (e.g. Noteflight, FruityLoops).

Musical pieces may be a maximum of: 3 minutes long and should be uploaded to SoundCloud or YouTube (if created via Noteflight, leaving it there is permitted).

Links to the uploaded pieces should be sent to myself via Private Message under the title: '[Halloween] [M] <yourname>'

Any queries should be posted below.

Prizes will be revealed at the time of voting, and may change slightly throughout the voting period.

My Browser is being Derpy, does the Short story have to be about Halloween? Or can it be spooky/Creepy/not relate to Halloween? Just be spooky/creepy/Bloody/etc?

For short stories, can it be a Halloween based story, but not in the horror genre?

Didn't Uthor just ask the exact same question? Lol.

To answer both of your questions, I'm almost positive that Danny stated the theme as spooky/horror themed, as opposed to Halloween themed, because it allows for more creativity and variety. So no, I'd have to say it does not have to be about Halloween.

Actually my question was the opposite, I asked, can it be a Halloween story, but NOT horror? I'm not into horror but I could do something along the lines of adventure/comedy in a Halloween theme.

Edit: well, reading it over again I guess it wouldn't fit the competition, but I still do like to write for competitive things, but horror stories bore me so I wouldn't come up with a good one.

In terms of the themes - it must be either spooky or scary. It doesn't need to be based around Halloween itself however.

Define "spooky".

Say I have a story that is not necessarily horror, but has some slightly creepy themes/implications. Am I eligible with that?
