Your View: What's Necessary In A Tutorial?

Howdy folks,

A while ago I'd been thinking about re-introducing the tutorial area to the Lord of the Craft, however I never actually got round to doing much work on it - however, today I was approached by a player who reminded be of it, and I want to hear you guy's thoughts:-

What do we need in a tutorial area?

Whether it be - the chat channels explained, shops or the rules - what are the fundamental aspects of gameplay that you feel we need to introduce to the player as soon as they join the server? Perhaps even the locations of settlements on the map, so that they don't get lost, or even a progressive character card set-up stage, where various NPCs explain to them how to set it up as part of the tutorial - so, what do you think?

Anything that players will need to understand.  Useful information.

They seem to manage, but if we could get another bookcase plugin working we could extensively outfit the temple library with information. Better to avoid NPCs though. *shudder*

Make it short and simple, but I honestly prefer to read the information off the forums, instead of ingame.

And it would be awasome if you could keep all OOC stuff OOC, and all IC stuff IC.

General things new players should know. Important things, not every little detail.

It'd be cool if you keep it as RP as possible too.

- Explain the different chat channels, how to use them, how to leave them (/ooc specifically)

- Explain the different plug-ins that are "must know", like: Character cards, shops, soulstones, etc.

- Explain some things that are unique to our server/roleplay servers, like: Proper mining (keeping things logical in roleplay), proper and logical buildings, can't PVP unless both parties agree, can't run from RP, can't combat log, etc. Most are in the rules, but a refresher is always nice.

I like the idea of a walk-through with NPCs telling you various things. Building your character card bit-by-bit could be cool. Perhaps have them walk through a mineshaft as well.

Factions in power.

Who to avoid if you're "X" type of character.

Guild Base locations, assuming they're not meant to be hidden, for recruitment purposes.

Rundown of the way each city works, who runs it, and maybe a brief profiling of those who run the land?

Possible locations to acquire certain skills through RP.

Pretty much, a minor guide to give petty direction.

An ooc base for mentors and guides that simply come there to oocly assist for a time-period. Also most commands.

Maybe start them off in a room with a wool map of Anthos?

"Are you new in town?"

I would think that a map might be good but things such as guild bases and things that are meant to be found out through RP should be kept to finding out through RP and to avoid metagaming

I think there should definitely be a mention of each race's basic culture, and all gifts/curses.

(I look original, but I'm actually stealing other peoples ideas. SHH! It's a secret.)

A map definitely (not one with much detail, just road directions to the main cities and the wilds so they have room to explore), correct way of mining, and maybe buddylist tutorial :)
