[05/18/13] Gm Q&a

And here we have again, people blowing things hugely out of the water without paying any attention to what we've said. We haven't said that we'd stop the roleplay, we've said we'd likely do it, and we'd decide how we'd deal with it when we came to a situation such as that. What it appears is happening is you're all also overestimating what was even said - we didn't say we were going to protect entire nations, or anything such as that - but instead, that if a racial capital was about t be conquered, we would likely (not a confirmation or a denial of what we'd do) step in and find a method of stopping it. We'd do this for every reason I've previously listed for the benefit of the server, and the benefit of the players.

I don't think this was misconstrued at all. The emboldened statement is in fact what those who oppose this are arguing against.

I'm not going to write a long and detailed post about how I disagree with this, so I'll outline it quite simply. This is an RP server. We are here to RP and consequently deal with RP in RP.

If a racial capital was about to be conquered, the GMs getting involved, stepping in and shutting down the situation OOC is not RP, and it's not fair on the conquering players (Who, mind you, have been solely RPing this.) at all. It's comparable to the GM team stepping in when anybody at all faces an IC loss. Players on LotC should have the opportunity to be victorious in roleplay without an out-of-character hindrance or similar barrier.

Q. Is one race’s nation allowed to conquer another race’s nation?

A. If one nation’s land was lost to another nation, it would ruin the future RP for the nation that lost the territory. An RP situation would likely occur to prevent such an event from occurring. We’ll be able to provide a more suitable response when we actually cross that bridge.

So what is being said here, if a group of people build up a small army, take a city from another Nation, thus forming their own nation. If the Nation that had their land taken from them, retaliates by sending a huge army there to wipe it out and reclaim their land, which would wipe out the new and small nation, this would not be allowed? And for some reason, a huge army that was obtained IC is somehow repelled by a small army or the magical thunderbolts from the sky?

OR

Two Huge Nations have been at it for a long time, eventually one Nation gets beaten back by fair and RPed battles by armies that were raised with RP until finally all one Nation had left was their capital, the Nation who is attacking and has spent so much of their time working out how to actually win this war, gathering resources, building armies, forging alliances. Suddenly, on the day of the battle a earthquake happens and wipes out the attackers army but doesn't even touch the defender's army.

Can someone please tell me how this makes RP sense?

Do I need to remind you all that we're not in Asulon anymore? Have you guys learned nothibg from warclaims?

Having your land conquered, house taken, being shat on daily is NOT fun for anyone but the players conquering lands. This isnt a faction server.

I shouldn't need to remind you that LOTC isnt about winning or getting the best loot and land.

All this talk about how "we would simply make a rebellion/ you should just rebel" is hilarious because of how ill conceived and naive people are to the fact of rebellions on this server.

Rebellions hardly ever work on this server period. And it is the players own fault for this. The mentality of "playing to win" pushes people to do everything in their power to stomp on the players doing it even if they must meta and powergame to do so.

Not only that but the fact is that unless you gain half the server's support you'll end up loosing anyways because of the fact you are severely out manned.

Not only that but as well at the moment it is worse to be the rebels than it is to be on the loyalist side. In order to be a rebel leader you need to be put at risk of perma killing your own character the moment he is captured which won't be long because most rebellions are metaed before they even get to the second stage of their plans. Whilst the loyalist side is completely fine if they get captured by rebels because they can just die and come back again. There is literally no draw factor to be a rebel which really kills the ability to gain support against whatever they are rebelling against.

Rebellions do not work of lotc. If there was anything better suited to describe "easier said than done" it is an lotc rebellion simply because people do not want to loose at all. And will make sure that rply and oocly the people even trying are beaten down and thrown out before the second week because people do not care about their rp. They only care about making sure their own rp is secure.

All this talk about how we can simply rebel... it is all a load of bollocks and you know it.

I agree with Blundermore.

My issues with this run deeper though, because it would seem that the only thing the Human nation is capable of doing RPly is attacking and conquering.

It's easy for the overpowered side to simply say "it's just RP" when the humans have the largest army on the server.  Of course there's also the excuse that "we're just RPing the way we're supposed to RP our people", which is also bollocks because you made humans this way for this purpose-we need more RP and interesting conflict than we do forcing people from their nations as a race. This server is all about not one player or faction controlling everything.  On top of all that, the only people who get anything out of this kind of roleplay is the humans.  Who have a culture so controlling if the elves don't immediately drop to their knees worshipping Godfrey and their God, they are heretics and should be slaughtered.

My personal opinion about this could be construed as somewhat insulting to the militaristic human playerbase- If you are capable of doing good RP, maybe you should consider showing some instead of trying to convince everybody how legit your stale and cliche domination RP is.

Borha are event team monsters. Not a race. Such in a way a zombie is a monster or a skeleton.

A few things to be clear on.

The power of a nation is often times determined by OOC factors, like the distance it takes to get to a nation determining how many players join it.  This subsequently effects the power of the nation.

As someone who had the nation he called home get taken over I can tell you its no fun and even less so when you know there is nothing IC you can do about it because in reality the other group outnumbers your player base 3 to 1. Just like what happened with Malinor and Oren, in that case the only reason Oren could steamroll Malinor is because they outnumber them easily 5 to 1 because players are drawn to Oren because its a nation almost always focused on conflict and a lot of players enjoy conflict when its so one sided they don't even need to try.

There are people out there who have positions of power only because their other character gave them it, which as some would know breaks the rule on multiple character interaction. Yet we allow it, when it clearly is only happening due to OOC reasons.

So, before you go shouting for OOC to never effect RP, remember it already does and people don't say anything about it because it benefits them.

Ohgod. I dare to delve into the sea of opinions here?

Alright, here's my take. Prepare yourselves.

I am in full support of the GMs' response to that question about complete and utter domination. Domination is only fun for one side. An equal fight is fun for both, regardless of the winner. The current state of affairs seems to be there is one superpower, namely Oren, which is steamrolling everyone. Those of us who do not enjoy the type of roleplay found in Oren, e.g. the conflict/inquisition seek other places to roleplay. Now, let's think about what would happen if every place in Anthos was suddenly Oren. That RP would be everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. There would be no solace(no pun intended) for anyone who does not enjoy that type of RP. This problem is what the GMs are trying to avoid with their so called "deus ex machina" plays.

For all the people saying "SOLVE IT IN RPPPPPP," there is a way. During the 20th century, most of the major powers, e.g. Germany, Britain, et al. managed to stay intact. This is because of treaties. Instead of total domination by one imperialistic power, small territories were traded between hands through treaties. If the nations cared to create a treaty system in RP, then we'd be able to preserve the OOC desire for varied roleplay through IC means.

Again, I like the idea of conquest seems interesting. Though the one place that cannot be conquest is the capitals(cloud temple aswell) and some land around it. I think that is fair. I forgot who mention that but kudos to you.

Some people don't seem to realize that my proposed changes in my previous post are actually a compromise.

For all the players who enjoy conflict RP, they get to fight each other over the large central area of the map.

And then meanwhile, the people who don't enjoy being shat on daily by Oren can stick to themselves.

People who support unrestricted conflict and conquering of nations have to realize that it isn't all about them. At least half the server doesn't want to be conquered and shat on. And you have to respect their wishes.
That is the reason why I proposed a compromise. Which is that you can still attack all the settlements owned by nations, but just not conquer nation capitals.

Almost all the people I see advocating unrestricted war and conquering are the ones who would be the rulers and the attackers.

The only reason Oren is able to 'steamrole' everybody as I have heard it called. Is because they OOCly have the most players. For whatever reason lots of people like conflict RP and the life of medieval humans. But do not for a second say that Oren is the most powerful nation because of RP or IC reasons, as that is simply not true.

Or rather then whining about it, the other nations could all team up and fight Oren back down? The orcs, dwarfs, elves and kha would have enough manpower to be able to surely.

Well for starters that would be a little metagamish.

Even with a common enemy, an alliance between all of these races wouldn't make RP sense as they hate each other.

And even if they all teamed up I seriously doubt they would even have enough soldiers then, they have all lost the majority of their players to Oren.

But I don't think you quite understand what we are discussing here. We are talking about the fact that many people don't like conflict RP. Which would include attacking other nations...
