Elf

-High elf

-Wood elf

-Dark elf

Human (There's literally billions of these, and a war to lower their power, and all the other races are dying. The main appeal of the humans, power, has also diminished recently.)

Half-elf/Adunian

Halfling (These guys are cool, and don't really get new people)

Orc (Pretty cool guys, and they definatly need more people)

Goblin (Subrace of orc)

Kharajyr ((With application))

Dwarf (DWARVES! We're all cool.)

-Cave or forest or mountain.

-Even a half-dwarf/half-dark elf subrace which is pretty interesting. Coal-like skin* and solid orange eyes. This is a Doomforged, you need to ask Darkjames about this.)

Kitten, you need to work on yo' racial knowledge

Dwarf:

-Cave Dwarf

-Doomforge (Only experienced players, Dwarf/Dark Elf hybrids)

-Ironborn (This is a tricky one as there is a conflict wether this is a subrace or just a clan, also only top notch dwarven rpers)

-Mountain Dwarf (The most common dwarven race)

-Forest Dwarf (Almost extinct)

-Dwarf / [insert other race here] (Dwarf/Human = Halfling)

-Thunderfist Cave Dwarves (Really pale skin, also not a subrace, just a clan with a special appearance, very pale skin and colorful eyes)

I think that's pretty much it. . .correct me if I'm wrong.

But to answer entirely; Yes, you have to be one of the five main races, and / or their subraces, for your character.

For example; One cannot be a Dremora from The Elder Scrolls. But one can be an Elf from LoTC.*

*As LoTC has it's own lore for every concept it uses, outside lore is not welcomed if it is from such things as games, movies or other media products.

Orcs;

 -Nomad (Taller, well, Nomadic Orc)

-Goblins

-Ogres (Damn tall, not sure of who and who isn't allowed playing them.)

Classes?: Shaman(Requires Magic), KLOMPOAR(Fighter)!

Humans;

-Adunian

-Halfling

-Northerner (Taller, stronger)

-Southerner

-Easterner (Fairly new I think, mostly just common-sense adaptations with these)

Dwarves;

-Mountain Dwarf

-Cave Dwarf

-Forest Dwarf

(These are the main ones, and above post covered all the specifics)

Elves; (Lovely Elves...)

-Dark Elves (Mali'ker)

-Wood Elves (Mali'ame)

-High Elves (Mali'aheral)

Kharajyr (Cat people)... (Requires application)

:idk:  I try.

Oooooookay. Time to back up a bit.

When applying to the server, choices are fairly limited. There are some options that can be achieved through other applications or in roleplay, including other races and cultures. When applying, though, you can be one of the four main races, one of their sub-races or a Half-breed. Options are listed below.

Dwarf

- Sub-races of Forest Dwarf, Mountain Dwarf or Cave Dwarf

Elf

- Sub-races of Wood Elf, Dark Elf or High Elf

Human

- Sub-races of Northerner and Southeron

Orc

- Sub-races of Uruk and Goblin

Half-breeds

- Halflings and Adunians

Most of these have their own wiki pages for further information.

Too many random halfbreeds, no wonder there's an inquisition in Oren.

Lago has stated all the races... I recommend playing a halfling! I just started one and it is really fun!

Don't play a halfling if you ever want to combat rp, though.
