  1. I'm not gonna clog up the new guy's thread with this, but Lord Lawyer (as much as his style of writing grates on me) is making a really good point. New players should be pushed towards the very active zones in the beginning. Because they'll give up if they log in and find zero RP.

Let's face it, averages are just that, averages. If ten people hang out for two hours in Brandybrook sometime (which happens), that means that there are nineteen hours of complete inactivity to make up for it. One person online on average really means usually deserted with pockets of activity. I can count on my hands the number of times I've walked into Brandybrook and found one other person on to RP with. Normally, I just wander through the empty streets, closing doors, and feeding the chickens. And then, I wander off to Sutica or Renatus or someplace where activity actually happens during EST primetime.

I just forgot about the halflings. I was doing this from the top of my head. They do have a decent settlement, yeah like the dwarves and orcs they have their dry sprees but they still have roleplay and shouldn’t be forgotten.

Oh yeah, I forgot Sutica too.

But yeah, my point is this. Freebuild and easy to get charters for smaller groups are terrible for the server and when new players join up with them, the new players tend to quit the server real quick.

To be honest, halflings aren’t worth it if you aren’t in the Halfling discord and able to see when people are online/when events are being planned.

if you’re in the discord, it’s great.

  2. If staff penalizes new applicants for not getting the lore right, when the stated lore is not up-to-date, then this is absolutely something staff should address. This is not simply a halfling issue. It is an issue throughout the entire wiki, an issue staff has acknowledged and stated they want to fix. I am not asking how they are fixing it, but asking what stop-gap measures they will employ until the wiki becomes up-to-date.
  3. He clearly means online at any given time, which you agree with him with.
  4. Hello real Burnsy. I'm, at least according to the Dwarf Discord, "fake Burnsy."

  5. Can there be uniform rules for accepting a whitelist application? I love looking through apps and the disparity in requirements by the CT is astounding. Some require there to be "one good, one neutral, and one bad" interesting facts about the character, despite the rule just being "one of your facts should be a bad thing." Some CT members require giving examples of powergaming and metagaming (even if the definitions given are good), whereas the rules do not require them. What is the CT doing to help applicants get the lore right when the wiki is wrong and out-of-date with so much basic lore? For example, Halflings would have no idea what their current village is, most racial wiki pages still have nexus references in them, and very few wiki pages have Arcas info (and the geography info they do have isn't listed as being from a prior map). Would the CT consider creating a Community Ombudsman position?
  6. Welcome! It's always nice to see someone who wants to play a halfling. One of the best things about being a halfling is that you aren't pigeon-holed into being in Brandybrook if you don't want to be. Many places are friends to Halflings. A town called Westmarch has quite a few mixed in with the humans, there are halflings in the trade city of Sutica, there are halflings that live full-time with the druids, and more. LoTC allows you to find your niche. We look forward to playing with you.
  7. I'm probably older than you. But not in time on the server. ?
  8. I would love for the Forest Gnomes to not just be a pesky menace. There's an opportunity here to really have something more akin to David the Gnome, which is an avenue oft unexplored in fantasy these days.
  9. Why cake sword when pie sword is better?
  10. My main is a farmer and cook, so this is a selfish ask. But, with alchemy coming, I'd love to have some kind of cooking plugin or some such. Nexus had its issues because it locked you out of basic materials, but I'd love to provide more than just some custom titled pies.
  11. I was mainly joking. Halfling are, by leaps and bounds, the least populous of the open races. And it takes a certain kind of person to play a halfling in a game where kingdoms and wars make some of the largest forms of roleplay. But, if you're ever interested in a cup of tea, a scone or two, a few slices of cake, maybe a pie, some stew, a quarter of chicken, some roasted vegetables, and some freshly baked rolls, stop by and have luncheon with us sometime.
  12. Welcome to Lotc! I hope you have fun here. There's some awesome people here to roleplay with. Also, everyone here agrees halflings are the best, so play a halfling.
  13. This halfling looks forward to one day being scraped off the bottom of your orc's boot.
  14. Hoo boy, why am I choosing to step on this flaming bag of dog poo? I've been around for a little over two weeks now, so I have a bit of an outside perspective and it's not a pretty one. Harold was a toxic member of this community, a missing stair, and frankly I'm glad he's gone. All of his posts were full of ugliness and vitriol seemingly designed to get this reaction out of staff so he can feel justified in leaving. There are ways to get your point across, and Harold's point had literally nothing but hate, insults, and invective. Frankly, this community will be better without him responding to everything in bad faith and with with no actual feedback beyond "staff sucks. Staff's ideas suck. This game sucks. Why does everything suck? Suckity Suckity Suckity suck." Bye Harold. I hope you find a place you're happy, but this will be a happier place without you.
  15. But beware, on a high volume server, resource packs can put a toll on your your system and lag badly.
  16. Don't be afraid to say hello. Don't travel by road with tons of stuff on you. Make sure to vote every day. The settlement guides, in addition to roleplay suggestions, tell you busy times for various settlements, so you'll know when places are busy and when they're ghost towns. A lot of people on the forums are salty beyond belief. Players in game are much nicer. The free build area is called the Wildlands and is the far west of the map, if you like that sort of thing. There are resource pits at the Cloud Temple. Have fun!
  17. You're right, and I concede the point, while agreeing its a shitty way to play. Hence my later post on Playing to Lift.
  18. One thing I would recommend everyone to consider when examining these rules and how to apply them to themselves is, in my opinion, the cardinal rule of role-playing: "Play to Lift." The best role-play is generous role-play as opposed to selfish role-play. As you RP around Atlas, ask yourself if your play is giving other players time to shine and get the ability to enjoy themselves. In all play, we should endeavor to lift others into the spotlight and give them their moment. Sometimes it may mean letting the villain do his dastardly deed. And, of course, for the villain, it means letting others finally come and make you pay your dues. For someone being declared war upon, ask yourself, "by denying this, am I lifting that other nation's story or putting it down?" I know these are idealized words (some may even say naive) but after over two dozen years of this stuff, I'm appreciative of these lofty goals. And, if the community plays to lift, then it leads to other areas where staff can give players an almost radical level of trust. Play to Lift. I recommend it.
  19. In what way does that not break metagaming rules?
  20. So, I've had a night to sleep on this, and I believe that such an action (refusing a war for ooc reasons like "I want my settlement to act with impunity without risk of war") is definitely metagaming, which is already against the rules and can be punished by staff. So, I think that this behavior can be quashed.
  21. Oh, look, here I've been around a couple days and haven't even said hello yet. So, hi, I'm new. I'm Burnsider and I play Fredegar "Fred" Puddlefoot, a lowly halfling farmer with delusions of adequacy. I'm 34 years old, a Floridian, and the father to a rambunctious two-year-old. Therefore, my playing time is limited mainly to after he's asleep. I've been playing TTRPGs (and GMing games) for two dozen years now. I've also LARPed for over a dozen years. I have been an ST for several LARP and was the creator and admin of a three year Legend of the Five Rings LARP. I thought I'd start small (pun intended) for this server and see where my RP takes me. Thanks for having me.

Oh, hello my friend. Care to come and have a set with ole Fred here and listen to my tale? What, you think a humble farmer can’t have a tale to tell? I’ll have you know I’m the sixth Fredegar Puddlefoot in nine generations. We halflings are proud of our heritage and will talk your ear off. Just a short tale then? Please? It’s been ever so long since someone came for a chat. See, my Da was Tolman Puddlefoot and he lived over the Long Hill under the Trellised Pines and beyond the Bird Bog near Pennywhistle Pond. Now, he was a Pumpkin Lord worshipper through and through and do you know what he said to me? He said, “little Fred”, for I was but a mere lad of a dozen-and-two at the time, “little Fred,” says he, “it is a good life to be a farmer and farm pumpkins, but you can’t be a good farmer unless you have land and you can’t have land in the hollows. You must set off and make a new place for yourself, beyond the Long Hill and even the Banded Lake where Pennywhistle Pond is not even known. There, you can be the best farmer you can be.” Now, my Ma didn’t hold to such ideals. She was a Willowbell, and her Gram was Widow Willowbell if you’d believe it, not that many do, but you should. She believed I should just be a good lad and stay with the rest of the family and take over our little farm, farming pumpkins day in and day out. But I didn’t hold to such things. I had dreams of mushrooms and mutton, wheat and wool, sorghum and spuds. I was not to be a simple pumpkin farmer, no sir, no. I was to be a great farmer and do as my Da told me. And so I did, and when I was a score, a dozen, and six, I kissed my Ma goodbye. She wiped some tears from her mustache (I believe she still had a bit of dwarf in her, you know) and told me that I was being a silly boy and I would be back home before dinnertime became suppertime. Well, it’s been a baker’s dozen years since and here I am, not yet turned back. I got a nice farm now, some good ale brewed, and even a little patch of tasty leaf for a fine evening. Yes, I may not ever matter in the great scheme of things when two empires are at war (even if they may run roughshod over my cabbages) and when great princes are put on trial in Helena, but it's good and decent work I do. I know it may not seem like much to a tall folk such as your fine self, but it’s the best a Puddlefoot has ever been, and I’m rightly proud of it.
