In the depths of the new forests of the Mali lies a forgotten ruin; one apparently made by elf kind. At least, that is what Kaelin guessed from the elvish writing on the ruins. He studied one of the easier ones closely, brushing away dirt and moss.
"Elsanan Malin ito Narne..."
He searched his mind for half remembered lessons in the ancient tongue so many years ago in what was then known as Leumalin. It came to him.
"The Words of Malin walk here?"
He tilted his head. Odd words to find in a new land. He wandered back to the largest structure of the ruined complex. On one impressive wall stood a long and convoluted passage in elvish. Through an arch to its right he could spy a room with yet more writings but his path was barred by thorns and bushes... the touch of some form of Druidic power lay in them.
"Curious."
Kaelin turned his eyes to the inscription, wondering if it had anything to do with the barrier of flora.
He strained his eyes to find some meaning to them... lessons half remembered and old glimpses of elvish his adopted Mali'ame parents would spout off on occasion nearly four centuries ago. Sitting down on a slab of ruined stone nearby he drew out one of his notebooks and some fine charcoal and set to work.
After two hours of work he looked upon what he had come up with.
He smiled sadly. He was certainly no linguist, but he was surprised that he remembered that much. In all likelihood his translation was inaccurate, but the gist of what was written was clear.
"It seems as if someone has... or had... rather strong views about the path our people are on."
He sighed, cursing the failing light. He wanted to spend more time in these ruins, but he doubted his eyes or mind could stomach another hour staring at these inscriptions. He added a note to his translation and headed back through the forest. Maybe he would bring his work to someone more skilled in the ancient tongue. The words written there, however, continued to trouble him.
((My attempt at the elvish inscriptions on the forest ruins - took me two hours and a lot of paper. Whoever wrote them deserves a bloody medal.))
