The threshold is a bit strict to prevent some weird colors. As for the saturation it's because RGB has no concept of brightness as a separate value. To make a color brighter in RGB, you have to push the components up somehow, and blending toward gray/white causes the desaturation as a side effect.

Wsg gang, Just dropping in with an update for players with Aether VIP. You can now customize your emote color to any hex value using the following command: /chat settings emotecolorcustom <hexcode> The command will also automatically adjust your chosen color to ensure it remains readable against Minecraft's dark background.
