[Feedback] What Is Truly Wrong With The Media Team

Simmpa, that's incredible!!! I've heard animations take forever but you seem to have a knack with it. You should keep trying to push your limits in what you can do with it, and see how far you've made it in a week. :D That reminds me of the old trailer with animations man, it was SO beast.

Thanks mate :) These are just some test scenes after trying out something new with blender. Currently I'm trying to finish one full length (1min - 1min30sec) animation to push my current limits. :) I'll keep you posted, and feel free to subscribe that channel; I'm posting my renders and animations there.

When I do have enough skills to make full legth animations (I'm too harsh on myself when looking at my work :D) I might offer my "skills" to the media team.

EDIT: And my nickname is still Simppa, not Simmpa... Why did someone mistype my name in wiki :((

Nobody really answered my question, but here's a simple script idea for an animation/trailer in case we have a team that's up for the job:

Scene: A camera rolls over a sunrise where a Halfling character or two stand in a field, smiling (Have it pause on the characters, in bold fancy lettering write HALFLINGS). Peaceful music would probably play. The scene would darken a little and turn to a forest, where a big Orc is climbing out (pauses on the Orc, write out ORCS in fancy bold lettering) and marching hungrily towards the Halflings. Maybe he's brandishing an axe, or a bone club. Perhaps it could even be a small band of Orcs together. As the near the Halflings, arrows spring out from the forest they came from and kill a few of the Orcs, and the camera zooms in to show some Elves with bows (it pauses on them, saying ELVES in fancy bold lettering).

That's just something from the top of my head, imagine what a whole team could think up... Hopefully this got some ideas going!

I enjoy this idea very much! I personally cannot animate such a thing, but I assume it can be done quite easily in Minecraft with the right angles and shaders. ;)

I'll be brutally honest here, you have to be really harsh when you choose who does the voicing. Honestly, in most trailers including the one quoted above by Susitsu the voicing makes me cringe. Seriously, it makes me feel bad for playing the server. It's harsh but that's the blunt truth. With voicing I'll break it down to what I feel is crucial.

  • Voice - Peoples voices are important, it's basicly sets someone's first impression of you and the server. I think this goes more for the person who's doing the interview rather than the person they're interviewing. You need to find a Morgan Freeman of LoTC, and if you can't then find someone's who's close enough. Because you really don't want people who sound like this.
  • Tone - Don't be too serious all the time, LoTCBC is an example of that. Have fun with it, unless it's something like a trailer. Then you have to be serious... Well kinda. Overly serious makes me want to cringe, like I end up treating it as one of those videos I would go out of my way to close down as soon as someone enters the room out of pure shame just from watching it.
  • Content - I think others touched on this but if it's full of inside jokes and unknown references no ones gonna get it. Not to mention the content varies on what you're doing. Stick to forum post for news, and focus on showing off big battles. Doing some sort of "Let's plays", podcast and livestreams. I would advise, to make LoTC seem less "nerdy". So people don't get put off by it.

Overall I'm not a fan of LoTC related content that involves people speaking. Since normally it's too serious and makes me feel embarrassed to watch it, and not in a good way at all. Stuff like "LoTC with me" or whatever Zilldudes thing was called (sorry) is fine though. Because it doesn't take itself seriously, it's just someone having fun. Not overly nerdy and really just a laugh. What am I trying to get at? Avoid "official" content involving the need for people to speak unless you have someone with a great voice, and try to make LoTC seem less "nerdy". I think that's one thing that puts people off roleplaying and LoTC. Make it seem more casual and fun, rather than strict and boring. Podcast, livestreams and recordings are fine. But try to sound like you're having some sort of fun, not like the Media Team Leader has a gun pointed to your head. Or vice versa.

Apart from that do what Coaster said, big battles and stuff. Show more Mc related things, like plugins and wars. Rather than a wall of text, showing someone raising his hand to greet you. Short and sweet, people are lazy and want to see things happening. Rather than walls of text, forcing them to lean forward and read the screen.  Last note, I do hate the term nerd, geek, ect. But that's how people will view it, and I did say I would be brutally honest in what I think.

Edit: Now this does not mean I dislike the media team, in fact I enjoy some of their work. I feel it's not just the media team that needs to change, but also us. We need to be a bit more ready to say if we like things, or otherwise the MT will go into an endless loop of not knowing what the playerbase wants. To gently give them a push, after all they're not those who've spend years making trailers for large companies, ect. Just people who happen to be good with a camera or a pen, or whatever. And I'll truly end on that note.

Trailers should not be a field of work for the media team, in my opinion. The MT should only stick to filming and editing important RP events, or guide videos. As I mentioned in the main media team reformation post, we should instead use the server money to pay MC animators and professional editors for the trailers, as they are extremely important in terms of pulling in new players. Not to sound too harsh, but the trailers done by the MT have simply not been as good as they /should be/.

We need to focus on generating more recruitment videos. It doesn't necessarily have to be anything scripted or staged. Just get in on more events and battles, record them and post them regularly in various venues to draw attention to the server. The videos that have inspired me and that I appreciate the most are the ones that show actual players caught in the action just doing what they do.

Also can we do media competitions? Like a minas prize for the winner, or like t1-2 donation or something? Gets the community more involved, and might help create better content. Depending on the theme that is.

Sometimes I think you people are literally reading my thoughts. This one sentence outlines the basis of my newest trailer I've began making. My inspiration was the video below:

5) Recruit some people with sexy european accents. Anybody seen Jorgen recently..?

Gigarun coughs, preparing his posh British accent.

The MT does **** nothing besides a few silly creative projects. If they provided LoTC MEDIA it would be a different story. Players apparently have to make their own battle videos and RP event documentation because the MT just wants to make silly newsletters.

Err...perhaps some suggestions and constructive criticism instead of complaints buddy? Complaints do nothing but make us feel bad. :)
