Helvetius 314 Share Posted May 12, 2014 This isn't a poll or thread to change anything. This is just a poll just to see how many RP and PvP defaulters there are in this server currently. This question struck me yesterday and, for me, it is curious to see what the statistics of the playerbase are on this subject. So outside of the poll: Do you like RP or PvP default more and why (If you want to explain)?
Rassidic 470 Share Posted May 12, 2014 RP default when people ask kindly and don't PG. PVP when I feel like 'oh this guy is going to PG so bad'.
Temp 2006 Share Posted May 12, 2014 Pvp Default, by far. It's the best way to put a powergamer down without getting a GM involved or tossing up some drama filled BR.
Jistuma 1996 Share Posted May 12, 2014 Last time I pvp'ed I had the grand number of 1 fps during the whole 2 seconds of fighting before I died without getting any hits in.Then there is that time I got hit 6 times in a tick because their hits take time to affect me, meaning I didn't get knocked back to evade the next hits and so I flew 10 blocks into the air and it was amazing. Then there is the problem that when I lag while running, I don't do like others and start teleporting, no no, I actually stop and continue walking when the connection returns or something, meaning I'm a sitting duck. Then there is that problem that my enemy appears to be 4 blocks away from me and I'm being hit, but for my adversary I'm only 1 block away from them. I never figured out how that worked when I was against a wall but who knows. So ye, it's not that I'm against PVP, it's just that PVP simply doesn't work with my PC and internet connection. Raptorious 1899 Share Posted May 12, 2014 PvP default is a far better system than RP default and seems to solve a lot of problems that would otherwise result in brain aneurysms. I love RP fighting, have done for a while but it only works about 50% of the time, with the other 50% just being ridiculous powergamed, incomprehensible and just plain frustrating. Nowadays I reserve RP fighting for fights that involve no more than 3 people tops as well as mage vs mage fights.
SirSnowMan 318 Share Posted May 12, 2014 PvP default, of course. Saves a lot of time, is more intense, has a great feel in lotc, and takes away the pressure for those that are bad at Rp fighting or are use to other Mc servers.
Lago 2572 Share Posted May 12, 2014 PvP default is necessary. Emote fights aren't bad but they require OOC cooperation. Both combat methods have their advantages, but as a default PvP wins hands down. If you're in a situation where default is being invoked, you're already not cooperating enough to Emote Fight.

Helvetius 314 Author Share Posted May 12, 2014 Well, 25 people have given their opinions. Out of 16 players who gave strong opinions, 56% chose PvP default and 44% chose RP default. Out of the full total 25 players, 36% preferred 50-50 :). Still, votes are coming in still so it would be nice to see the grand end total & to understand where the playerbase is at. Demotheus 651 Share Posted May 12, 2014 I'm split. I know a server who does RP Default beautifully. They're a very hardcore Role Playing server, high realism, and if you die...you're dead. Though it's a fairly small community of about 20-40 people as far as I can remember, so it works better. Everyone knows everyone there. Outright killing people is highly discouraged, making villainy less of a thing, but it's still there. It's also centered in a town, so there's no wars that you need pvp default for. People don't know the meaning of PvP default there, and the application process to get into said server is very, very difficult. The average LotC application would not even come close to cutting it with them. You need high character development, and to actually write a story. It doesn't have to be long, a minimum of two paragraphs, but you have to make sure you explain everything about them without it seeming like a list. They want you to know your character inside and out and play them exactly how you depicted them in your application/character application and also see them develop gradually throughout their lifetime in the setting. Rp default works here mostly because fighting isn't a huge thing, at least not to the death fighting. It doesn't work on LotC because, well, people care about pixels far too much here, myself included. I'm not exempt. People say "they're just pixels" but they're not. They take time to aquire, and you NEED them to really do anything in LotC. You have to have actual armor to represent your armor, not just have a skin with no armor in your inventory. In the RP default server I mentioned, that's not an issue. If you want armor on your character, have it on their skin. No big deal. It's RP default, there's no PVP, or at least rarely. Every little thing needs to have an item to represent it on LotC because of PVP/Mechanics default. Now here's where PVP default works. It speeds up fights and what not. And, assuming everyone is a good sport about it, is quite superior to RP default on LotC. There's simply too many people spread too far for most people to RP default someone. You run the high risk of being metagamed, they get back up from across the damn CONTINENT, and then you're an inclined plane wrapped around a spike. RP default works when its' with people that you from personal experience know is not an assclown or enjoy RPing with. Mostly between friends. IE: A microcommunity within the larger community of LotC. Where PvP default fails is the lack of...well...very few people let the loser of a PvP fight do any last emotes before they kill them. They just "Sentence you to die!" and that's the end of it. Even fewer people RP taking any sort of injury from a PVP fight if they won it. They seem to be under the impression that just because you win in a OOC click fest it means your character was somehow invincible the entire time, or was so good that you couldn't even lay a single hit on them - which is NOT how actual combat works. If you get into a fight with anyone who's anywhere near competent, you're going to sustain at least a minor injury. Why does that go out the window with most people in PVP? Why do people come back from massive wars after surviving and claim not a single man's sword or weapon came in contact with them or just plain didn't get any injuries? It's bs. It's highly unrealistic, to the point where fantasy can't even excuse it. So... TL:DR: Friggin read it. RP and PVP default are basically equal. It's when you add in other factors that tip the scales, making it very situational. It doesn't work very well in most cases of "random" fights on LotC, unless it's between players who OOCly know/like each other. It works best in a microcommunity or a tighter knit, more compact sort of community. Hope this ******* essay was helpful to your survey.
Lyuin 65 Share Posted May 12, 2014 I say we go back the old way, PVP if you can't agree. RP if you can. Also no mid-changing. When the first strike or PVP call is made. Combat begins.
Cyndikate 2303 Share Posted May 14, 2014 I'm a bit neutral honestly. I RP default while only using PVP on situations where it's needed. If I don't want to deal with a notorious PGer then I'll PVP default. RP default is a little more creative, since it allows you to show the world your characters strengths. Talents. Displaying what you put months into developing. PVP devalues such things. But it solves issues of bickering.
