The Rep Game. Many on the LotC forums waste their time trying to increase their reputation count and some sub-humans even focus on increasing their rep:post ratio (even though we all know this is silly and total count is what matters). Let's talk about our beloved +1's.

The rationale behind the green +1 button is to reward meaningful posts with a +1 to show its value. This gives forum browsers the ability to show what opinion is valued by them, which empowers the community to an extent. Furthermore, it gives other readers a quick visual indication as to what posts are considered "good" by the community.

We used to have a red -1 button. This allowed players to show their lack of support to posts with an idea that they did not agree with. It forced players to think before they posted, and added a sense of consequence to throwing out your opinion everywhere. However, after a couple of players received a barrage of -1's, it was removed because it was being abused for "cyberbullying". Since the -1 button was removed, it's been very easy to accumulate reputation. In order to receive reputation, one can simply post something controversial or inflammatory that aligns with the views of a sizable, vocal group. Rather than reputation signifying what the community as a whole thinks about one's ideas, it signifies what a minority that agrees with you believes.

From this, it seems that the presence of a +1 button is inherently flawed in the absence of a -1 button. It is also reasonable to suggest that a -1 button would be abused and lead to cyberbullying, again. However, the -1 button was so easily abused simply because of the anonymity from -1'ing another person. Players had no way of viewing who +1/-1 a post, while I believe the staff encountered a similar problem (correct me if I'm wrong).

I suggest either removing reputation or re-implementing the -1 button. If the -1 button were to be returned, it would be under the condition that +1/-1's are to be made public to viewers (something easily toggleable on our forums). This would ensure accountability for players' actions, as well as making it easy to moderate to prevent the dreaded cyberbullying.

I would +1 this but I don't want to give rep away so easily anymore  :crys: (no but seriously this is a good idea).

You literally only did this for +1s...

The only difference here is, he made it obvious.

/jk.

+1 anyway

But fake internet points make me feel good.

But seriously - Re-implement -1 and let me see who hits the button. That way I know whose ass to kick, in order to feel better.

But seriously, for real this time, rep is a joke. If you want to get support, make the topic a poll. +1 -1 doesn't do anything.

#Upvote me if you like +1 reputation marks.

...Also, do not make them public. Showing the usernames of people who +1 or -1 posts is not going to help mods stop the interjerks; honestly, I cannot even see a scenario where a user making a -1 could result in a sensible ban, unless he started making alt accounts to do so. If that was the case, then it would make more sense to just make the up and downvotes viewable to mods and admins alone.

If people are being cyber-bullied then the "bullies" will most likely get their mates and -1 all their topics so they cannot do anything about it and have a bad rep cause he was a victim of "cyber-bullying"

Unfortunately your reasoning, while possible, works off a false positive. Getting many -1s from people who are from the same group is /not/ indicative of them purposely organizing to defamate you. Someone "getting their mates together to -1 you," based off of +1s and -1s alone, is virtually indistinguishable from "likeminded friends having the same opinion."

Basically, you can't give a reasonable ban for someone giving a -1 on the forums.

Listen to this man. I'm 6th! 6th I tell you! j/k but not really

Now back on topic:

This did happen. A lot.

Aislin, something to consider: InvisionBoard has a setting that instead of a +1 number it states who +1ed it. So it would say "Boris1 and Steve42 like this." Don't know whether that's something you'd want to factor into your proposal or not.

EDIT: If they remove the +1 button, that locks Aislin in as Rep King forever, right?

Let moderators see who uses the +/-1, not regular users.

I feel like I shouldn't have to explain why.
