  1. 1. Prior to a Ban, a Ban Report must be Submitted.

    • Yes, absolutely!
    • No, you cannot ask that of us

    • Yes, and No, victims of malicious players activities sometimes need discretion. But a PM must be sent through to the accused informing them of their crime.

Reason for this thread: http://www.lordofthecraft.net/topic/118108-banned-for-ruining-event-area-pt-ii/#entry1130313

The reason I am bringing this to the attention of the Staff, and Player Base. Is because I feel that it's unfair to not know the reason for a ban. The last two times I was banned no one bothered to submit a ban report. While I know there is a plausibility that it might be my fault, this time was different.

The fact is I didn't know why I was banned, and that left a sour feeling in my stomach. No player deserves an un-provoked ban that isn't to their knowledge. While I understand that sometimes the crime maybe too malicious for the general public. (Victims wouldn't want to reminded of a malicious act, which I get.) For me, this is akin to the laws pertaining to a Miranda Warning.

Which if you're a history buff like me, you know that lack of a Miranda Warning is cause for dismissal in court. The point is, if you're going to be the Sheriff of LOTC, you need to do the paper-work that comes with it.

I can get behind this idea.

Obviously, if it's something relatively bad that deserves a longtime ban or even a permanent ban, the warning should go through via a PM (even if it's after the initial banning). Of course, if it's something minor, a ban report should go up or a PM should be sent to the person who's getting banned/reported. The GM's are here to help moderate the server, but they are players just like us and are supposed to follow both server rules and staff rules set for them.

"hold on before we ban this pugsier we have to make a ban report."

I think it's more for people who log on and see the message "The Banhammer has Spoken"

I'm supporting. If someone is pugsying you obv need to ban, but if it's like a grief everyone, even GMs, need to follow format and inform the accused.

HIDDEN REPORTS DO NOTHING

I whole heartedly agree.

The mood that bans you is supposed to send you a forum message with details concerning your ban report within like an hour or two of banning you. Sent from mobile so spelling and grammar.

This is the tendency and while it can't always be followed I think this serves as a reminder (even if just for me) that we should do this.

We have a moderator-only forum where a record of every ban is posted. If there's no post recording the ban there the ban will be reversed as soon as the inconsistency is noticed (which is usually when the player appeals). In this case the GM forgot to post a server ban for you. But Ever is right, a player is supposed to be PM'd a copy of their ban for their own records and I think some GMs (including myself) may have been a bit lax on that. I'll make sure to remind everyone.

Additionally, you're a special case because your MC name is too short to forum search :p

I think a public ban report would be better. It would remove the "oh (Insert GM here) left for the weekend."

That's just an example. I think GMs would ban less if they had to make an actual report every time. If it's not important enough to make a report for it, is it really important enough to ban someone over it?

We do (should be) make (making) a report every single time. They aren't difficult to write up either. In this case it was just forgotten.

Server bans are not public for a few reasons. For one they often contain sensitive information (such as IPs, screenshots and chatlogs that aren't appropriate for everyone to see or even because witnesses wish to remain anonymous for fear of backlash) and for another it's nobody's business except the player being banned why or for what they were banned. That information should be provided to the banned player, and anyone who wants more details about their ban should seek out the banned player, not the staff.

As a former Game Moderator, I used to look at minor offences with a simple private message in-game or forums. Reguarding the rule(s) they have broken and try to reaffirm the rules of LOTC. As I recall of my personal experence as a Game Moderator, I've placed down a thread on the forums for every person I've banned and why.  I'm not a person who gives out X - days banned. I allow that person to have time to re-read the rules and tell me in writing what rules were broken and how to proceed in the future. And then I unbanned them, with hopes they don't do it again. Along with that thread with me posting, "Unbanned." Let's just say, people dreaded to have me dealing with their ban.

From the issue I see here, we're lacking a major piece for Banned Players and the Game Moderators. Communication is KEY. There needs to be a Ban Report  prior to a banning. Even on the GM Ban List. (Whatever it's called now.) UNLESS, it's a person using hacked clients, malicious activites... ect. Need to be banned ASAP. However, they need to be notified as well. It's part of the job.
