Section 1: Offences Against The Person

 

§1: Assault

An assault is carried out by a threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm.

 

§1.1: First Degree

Severe Punishment

1.11: A person commits the crime of assault in the first degree if the person intentionally causes serious physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon; or

1.12: A person commits the crime of assault in the first degree if the person intentionally or knowingly causes any injury to a soldier of the Realm.

 

§1.2: Second Degree

Major Punishment

1.21: Intentionally or knowingly causes serious physical injury to another; or

1.22: Intentionally or knowingly causes physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon; or

1.23: Recklessly causes serious physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of Human life.

 

§1.3: Third Degree

Moderate Punishment

1.31: Recklessly causes serious physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon;

1.32: Recklessly causes serious physical injury to another under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of Human life;

1.33: Recklessly causes physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of Human life;

1.34: While being aided by another person actually present, intentionally or knowingly causes physical injury to another.

 

§1.4: Fourth Degree

Minor Punishment

1.41: Intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causes physical injury to another; or

1.42: With criminal negligence causes physical injury to another by means of a deadly weapon.

 

 

 

 

§2: Murder

A murder is carried out by the unlawful killing, with malice aforethought, of another man.

 

§2.1: First Degree

Severe Punishment

2.11: Any murder that is willful and premeditated.

 

§2.2: Second Degree

Major Punishment

2.21: A murder that is not premeditated or planned in advance.

 

§2.3: Voluntary Manslaughter

Major Punishment

2.31: Any intentional killing that involved no prior intent to kill, and which was committed under such circumstances that would cause a reasonable person to become emotionally or mentally disturbed.

 

§2.4: Involuntary Manslaughter

Moderate Punishment

2.41: A lack of intention to cause death but involving an intentional, or negligent, act leading to death.

 

 

 

§3: Battery

Moderate Punishment

3.1: An unlawful application of force to the person of another resulting in either bodily injury or an offensive touching.

 

 

 

Section 2: Offences Against Property

 

§1: Burglary

Punishment Varies

Illegal entry into a building for the purposes of committing an offence.

 

§1.1: First Degree

Moderate Punishment

1.11: Illegal entry into a building for the purposes of committing an offence in the night.

 

§1.2: Second Degree

Minor Punishment

1.12: Also known as housebreaking; Illegal entry into a building for the purposes of committing an offence in the day.

 

 

 

 

§2: Robbery

Punishment Varies

Taking the property of another, with the intent to permanently deprive the person of that property, by means of force or fear.

 

§2.1: Robbery

Moderate Punishment

2.11: Taking the property of another, with the intent to permanently deprive the person of that property, by means of force or fear.

 

§2.2: Aggravated Robbery

Major Punishment

2.21: Taking the property of another, with the intent to permanently deprive the person of that property, by means of force or fear by use of a deadly weapon; or

2.22: Taking the property of another, with the intent to permanently deprive the person of that property, by means of force or fear by use of an object that appears to be a deadly weapon.

 

§2.3: Armed Robbery

Major Punishment

2.31: Taking the property of another, with the intent to permanently deprive the person of that property, by means of force or fear by use of a deadly weapon.

 

§2.4: Highway Robbery

Major Punishment

2:41: Taking the property of another, with the intent to permanently deprive the person of that property, by means of force or fear within a public setting.

 

§2.5: Extortion

Major punishment

2.51: Obtaining money, property, or services from a person, entity, or institution, through coercion whose context and use would involve committing an offense.

 

§2.6: Grave Robbery

Major Punishment

2.61: Uncovering a tomb or crypt to steal artifacts or personal effects, or;

2.62: Disinterring a grave or disturbing a final resting place to steal artifacts or personal effects.

 

§2.7: Body Snatching

Severe Punishment

2.71: Secret disinterment of corpses from graveyards.

 

 

 

 

§3: Theft

Punishment Varies

Taking of another person's property without that person's permission or consent with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of it

 

§3.1: First Degree

Severe Punishment

3.11: An act of theft (see §3: Theft) that involves the pilfering of an object or objects whose value exceeds one gold sovereign.

 

§3.2: Grand Theft

Severe Punishment

3.21: An act of theft (see §3: Theft) that involves the pilfering of an animal used for either transportation or hard labor.

 

§3.3: Second Degree

Major Punishment

3.31: An act of theft (see §3: Theft) that involves the pilfering of an object or objects no more than one gold sovereign in value.

 

§3.4: Third Degree

Moderate Punishment

3.41: An act of theft (see §3: Theft) that involves the pilfering of an object or objects whose value is less than one gold sovereign, but greater than or equal to twenty-five (25) silver weights.

 

§3.5: Fourth Degree

Moderate Punishment

3.51: An act of theft (see §3: Theft) that involves the pilfering of an object or objects whose value is less than two hundred and fifty (250) minae, but greater than or equal to ten minae.

 

§3.6: Petty Theft

Minor Punishment

3.61: An act of theft (see §3: Theft) that involves the pilfering of an object or objects whose value is less than ten minae.

 

 

 

 

§4: Vandalism

Punishment Varies

The willful damaging or defacing of the property of others or the public.

 

§4.1: First Degree

Major Punishment

4.11: An act of vandalism whose cost of reversal or repair exceeds one gold sovereign in costs, or;

4.12: An act of vandalism whose damages irreversibly harm priceless relics, arts, or items.

 

§4.2: Second Degree

Moderate Punishment

4.21: An act of vandalism whose cost of reversal or repair is less than one one thousand minae, but greater than two hundred and fifty (250) minae.

 

§4.3: Third Degree

Moderate Punishment

4.31: An act of vandalism whose cost of reversal or repair is less than two hundred and fifty (250) minae., but greater than ten minae.

 

§4.4: Fourth Degree

Minor Punishment

4.41: An act of vandalism whose cost of reversal or repair is less than ten minae in value.

 

§4.5: Arson

Major Punishment

4.41: Intentionally and maliciously setting fire to buildings, wildland areas, or other property with the intent to cause damage.

 

 

 

 

§5: Trespassing

Punishment Varies

Unauthorized entry of another's property.

 

§5.1: Federal Trespass

Major Punishment

5.11: Unauthorized entry into an area or property of royal or federal control.

 

§5.2: Private Trespass

Moderate Punishment

5.21: Unauthorized entry into an area or property of private control.​

 

 

 

 

Section 3: Offences of Commerce and Contraband

 

§1: Smuggling

Major Punishment

Illegal transportation of items both lawful and unlawful, and beings.

 

 

 

 

§2: Contraband

Punishment Varies

Any item that is illegal to be possessed or sold. For a list of varying degrees of contraband see Appendix A

 

§2.1: Absolute Contraband

Severe Punishment

2.11: Goods that are mainly used for war.

 

§2.2: Conditional Contraband

Major Punishment

2.21: Goods susceptible of being used for warlike and peaceful purposes.

 

§2.3: Derivative Contraband

Moderate Punishment

2.31: Property whose possession becomes unlawful when it is used in committing an illegal act.

 

§2.4: Contraband Per Se

Moderate Punishment

2.41: Property that is in and of itself unlawful to possess, produce or transport.

 

§2.5: Fencing

Major Punishment

2.51: The illegal exchange of contraband for any purpose.

 

 

 

 

§3: Unlicensed Commerce

Minor Punishment

Participating in commerce or formal exchange without a valid license.

 

 

 

 

§4: Tax Evasion

Standard Punishment

Failure to pay taxes required of him by the Realm.

 

 

 

 

§5: Fraud

Punishment Varies

A deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain.

 

§5.1: Impersonating Authority

Severe Punishment

5.11: Falsely portraying oneself as a member of the guard, a soldier of His Majesty the King, or any figure of Federal authority for the purpose of deception.

 

§5.2: Impersonating a Nobleman

Severe Punishment

5.21: Falsely portraying oneself as a noble of Renatus for the purpose of deception.

 

§5.3: Fraud

Major Punishment

5.31: A deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain.

 

 

 

 

Section 4: Offences of Disorder

 

§1: Public Affray

Minor Punishment

The fighting of one or more persons in a public place to the terror of ordinary people.

 

 

 

 

§2: Resisting Lawful Arrest

Moderate Punishment

2.01: Fleeing from a member of the guard during an arrest; or

2.02: Threatening a member of the guard with physical harm during an arrest; or

2.03: Physically or magically struggling to resist being restrained or to escape restraints; or

2.04: Attacking a member of the guard while being arrested; or

2.05: Providing a member of the guard false personal identification.

 

 

 

 

§3: Reckless Riding

Moderate Punishment

Riding any kind of mount in a manner deemed reckless, and which may have the potential to cause others some kind of harm.

 

 

 

 

§4: Public Disturbance

Minor Punishment

Whoever is overly abusive, loud, or trying to initiate violence.

 

 

 

 

§5: Loitering

Minor Punishment

Whoever loiters in any public place without apparent purpose.

 

 

 

 

§6: Vagrancy and Transiency

Minor Punishment

Whoever lives idly, without a settled home, and makes his income by begging.

 

 

 

 

§7: Concealment of Identity

Minor Punishment

Whoever wears a mask, hat, or other item of clothing which disguises their identity, and refuses to remove said item of clothing when asked to do so by a member of the guard.

 

 

 

 

§8: Corruption of  Public Morality

Minor Punishment

Whoever does something so wrong that it outrages any reasonable person (nudity, wearing provocative garments, etc.)

 

 

 

 

Section 5: Offences Against Justice

 

§1: Obstruction of Justice

Moderate Punishment

Interfering with the work of the guard, investigators, regulatory agencies, prosecutors, or other officials of Civil or Realm conduct.

 

 

 

 

§2: Bribery

Moderate Punishment

The offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of any item of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty.

 

 

 

 

§3: Absconding from a Place of Custody

Major Punishment

4.01: whoever so attempts or succeeds to illegally escape or abscond from incarceration; or

4.02: Whoever so attempts or succeeds to illegally escape or abscond from any temporary facility or area in which the arrestee has been imprisoned.

 

 

 

 

§5: Fleeing the Realm

Severe Punishment

5.01: Whoever so attempts or succeeds to illegally leave the borders of Renatus or any land controlled by the Realm and His Majesty the King in a bid to evade arrest; or

5.02: Whoever so attempts or succeeds to illegally leave the borders of Renatus or any land controlled by the Realm and His Majesty the King in a bid to evade capture; or

5.03: Whoever so attempts or succeeds to illegally leave the borders of Renatus or any land controlled by the Realm and His Majesty the King in a bid to evade prosecution; or

5.04: Whoever so attempts or succeeds to illegally leave the borders of Renatus or any land controlled by the Realm and His Majesty the King in a bid to evade any legal sentence or duty imposed upon them.

 

 

 

 

Section 6: Offences Against The Crown

 

§1: High Treason

Severe Punishment

1.01: The murder of His Majesty the King; or

1.02  Levies war against His Majesty the King; or

1.03  Gives aid or comfort to the enemies of His Majesty the King; or

1.04  Kills any of His Majesty the King's government ministers; or

1.05  Counterfeits His Majesty the King's seal or signature; or

1.06  Attempts to hinder the heir to the throne in their succession; or

1.07  As an official, acts with malfeasance in office.

 

 

 

§2: Injured Majesty

 

2.01: Where a defendant publicly makes rude or offensive statements regarding His Majesty the King; or

2.02: Vandalizes a portrait, coin or the seal of His Majesty the King; or

2.03: Vandalizes the Dragon of Horen.

 

 

 

 

Section 7: Jurisdiction Act

 

I. Attempts and Conspiracies

 

§1: Attempting to Commit a Crime

One Step of Severity Reduction of the Associated Crime

This Reduction will not reduce the severity below Minor

Attempting to commit an crime is an individual, with full intention to commit a crime, makes a large, overt and irreversible step towards trying to commit said crime, but ultimately fails in the attempt.

 

§2: Conspiring to Commit a Crime

Two Steps of Severity Reduction of the Associated Crime

This Reduction will not reduce the severity below Minor

Conspiring to commit a crime is where two or more individuals seriously agree with each other about committing a crime, and begin to make plans to carry out said crime.

 

§3: Exempt Punishment

High Treason (S6§1) is exempt from any reduction in punishment

 

 

 

II. Trials

 

Summary Trial

Overseen by an agent of the King’s Hand, who will hear the cases of both the defendant and the prosecution, make a judgment, and sentences.

 

Larger trials

Overseen by the First Justiciar and/or two agents of the King’s Hand, both of whom will hear the cases of both the defendant and the prosecution, make a judgment, and sentences.

 

 

 

 

III. Legal Documentation

 

Proof of Citizenship

Members of other nations who have taken root within Renatian territory and seek citizenship may speak with a representative of the Royal Census of Renatus. The price for such documentation is one hundred and fifty (150) minae, as well as having spent at least one month within Renatian territory without offense.

 

 

 

 

Trading License

Subjects of the Kingdom of Renatus are free to purchase a license to do business from a member of the Royal Census or the local Steward.

  • One week license: ten (10) minae

  • Two week license: twenty (20) minae

  • One month license: forty (40) minae

  • Six month license: sixty (60) minae

  • One year license: One hundred (100) minae

 

 

 

 

IV. Appendices

 

A. Absolute Contraband

Any item found to be specifically used as a poison;

Explosive or flammable fuels in quantities exceeding 10 gallons.

 

B. Conditional Contraband

Lumber destined for use by enemies of the Realm;

Ore destined for use by enemies of the Realm;

Coal destined for use by enemies of the Realm;

Food or water destined for use by enemies of the Realm;

Any other form of seemingly innocent item that may be destined for use by the enemies of the Realm; or

Any other form of seemingly innocent item that is destined for use in the assistance of terror or belligerence.

 

C. Derivative Contraband

Any item not listed as contraband, but is used in the act of carrying out an offense, such as truncheons, swords, axes, knives, legal ranged weaponry, etc.

 

D. Contraband Per Se

Enslaved individuals;

Stolen goods;

Seditious literature or material.

 

E. Citizen's Arrest and Vigilantism

If a member of the local guard cannot be located, it is within the right of any citizen of the Renatus to apprehend a suspect, and secure him until help arrives.

No person outside of the local guard and law enforcement, regardless of their status, position or rank (unless authorized), is allowed to pass their own judgment and punishment on a suspect.

 

F. Search and Seizure

The local guard is authorized to search the property and person of any common citizen as it sees fit.

 

G. Boundaries of Jurisdiction

The local guard nor any of these laws hold any authority outside Renatian territory further than 100 yards beyond the border.

 

 

H. Outlawed Factions

Members of these groups are to be regarded as under civil death.

Cult of Ikuras, Necromantic Cult, House of Winchester and the Undead.

 

I. Deadly Weapons

Swords of any kind;

Maces of any kind;

Morningstars of any kind;

Flails of any kind;

Knives of any kind;

Whips;

Bows of any kind;

Crossbows of any kind;

Axes of any kind;

Armor spikes and shield spikes;

Knuckledusters or other manufactured fist-based weaponry;

Explosive ordnance;

Dangerous or destructive spells;

Animals used or trained for the purpose of combat;

Any tool or item that can be used for the purpose of bludgeoning;

Any tool or item that can be used for the purpose of slashing, stabbing, hacking, or chopping;

 

 

 

 

Punishment:

 

Any crime of theft above Petty Theft (S2§3.6) or Robbery (S2§2-2.7) of any kind may also include that the convicted have a hand or hands severed as a form of punishment.

 

Minor:

  • Up to a 100 minae fine, or confiscation of assets of equivalent value,

  • Up to two days held in custody in the cells,

  • Up to one days of community service,

 

Standard:

  • Up to a 250 minae fine, or confiscation of assets of equivalent value,

  • Up to three days held in custody in the cells,

  • Up to two days of community service,

 

Moderate

  • Up to a 450 minae, or confiscation of assets of equivalent value,

  • Up to four days held in custody in the cells,

  • Up to three days of community service,

  • Up to one day in the stocks, or any other  form of severe public humiliation.

 

Major

  • Up to a 650 minae, or confiscation of assets of equivalent value,

  • Up to two weeks held in custody in the cells,

  • Up to one week community service,

  • Up to four days in the stocks to serve public humiliation, or any other form of severe public humiliation.

 

Severe

  • Up to a 1100 minae fine, or confiscation of assets of equivalent value,

  • Up to one month held in custody in the cells,

  • Up to three weeks of community service,

  • Up to a week in the stocks, or any other form of severe public humiliation,

  • Banishment,

  • Possible execution.
