The Living Vine.

What is it?

The Living vine is a both positively affecting, and negatively affecting parasite to its host. The Living Vine grows high up in the trees of the deepest swamps, most commonly being found in the eldest of Weeping Willow trees. The vine is typically 2-3 feet long when it first begins growing on the tree. As a parasitic plant, it latches onto a branch of the tree tightly, obtaining nutrients that run through the bark. However, a secondary action occurs, where the vine maintains a mental connection between the tree and itself. Though of course, this serves no purpose as trees do not have much of a thought process.

However, the vine has been known to latch onto more nutrient rich beings, such as the basic fauna of the lands of Athera and even the main Races themselves. Now. As a tree is much larger, and a three foot vine leeching resources from it is not too big of a deal, a humanoid would most definitely feel the effects of the plant. Any person with the plant latched onto him or her would be extremely deprived of nutrients. This can cause them to feel ill at all times, become extremely thin and can cause overall weakness. However, with these downsides there are also upsides. The Living Vine is an extremely durable root, as to prevent removal from its own host. If the vine feels the emotion of fear wash over its own host, it will take any action it can to prevent its source of food to be eliminated. It has been known to create a solid, branch like club out of itself, then sprouting thorns from itself, or simply gather itself in one portion of its host's body to act as a sacrificial shield. However, once again, the vine can only grow to about three feet long and two inches wide at the maximum, so it will never be able to create a full bodied cocoon. The plant is NOT invincible, do not think that at all. It is about as durable as very thick Gidgee. ((Gidgee is the third thickest wood in the world, though is sometimes used as a substitute for ebony)).

How to obtain it

As it is widely known as a parasite, nobody should strive to obtain the vine. However, the edgy ninjas hunters or assassins whom spend most of their time in the trees would easily come in contact with the vine. The process is quite painless, and wouldn't be too concerning at first, until about a day later. The vine slowly crawls along the surface of the subjects skin on their arms or legs, simply wrapping around the body part loosely. This would be the moment when it is easiest to remove the plant, as it hasn't fully latched on yet. However, roughly twelve hours later the plant would send odd, glowing green thorns deep into the Host's upper extremity to begin reading neural signals and obtaining nutrients.

Removing the plant

The vine would have to be removed extremely painfully from the host, as the thorns it injects into the host are hooked at the end, and are very, very deep into the flesh (somewhat like a barbed arrow).  In order to kill or fully remove the vine, it must be torn from the flesh. Simply cutting it off would do more harm than good, as the parasite would use an overdose of resources to regrow its body.

Red Lines:

- The vine will never unlatch and move around independently like a snake.

- The host cannot control what form the vine takes.

- The host cannot control when the vine starts to become active, it only starts taking a form when the host feels extremely threatened.

- You will not feel perfectly healthy at all times. Feeling absolutely dandy and normal while having the vine on you will make you drowsy, nauseous and weak.

- The vine is NOT invincible. A sharp enough sword behind a strong enough arm can remove the vine.

- The vine will stay on one extremity, and will not move between parts of the body to guard them.

- The vine is not sharp, only the thorns it has are.

+1 - We need new ways to die that isnt "tribyoot" ((f all of you orcs)) or war or necromancers or abusive guards. I like the idea of having the first thing rped, and the concern it would bring. I would also like to think eventually if people arent careful about it, it will just spread everywhere and cause pain to everything in most forests.

Unfortunately this lore has been  [Denied] .

Now there are a few reasons regarding this, depending on your perspective they may be amendable however there are some 'difficult to work around' aspects.

To begin; on the surface it seems like a knock-off plant shade. The capability to extend 'tendrils' of plant which you cannot control and exists independently to your commands? We want to find unique lore that hasn't been used yet, bringing something new and not just offering a means to get around restrictions that may be presented IC. If you want to create some form of 'living vine' give it different effects on the body! However this would not be the only concern, for instance I personally feel the drawbacks are too low for the power this plant grants. Weakness and tired? It would need to be something grander, you've got a plant latched onto your body presumably leaking deadly toxins at a constant basis and it makes you.. tired? Consider that!

One concern brought up by a LM was that it's also fiddling with plants which is usually associated with druid magic. As stated in regards to shade lore, we're not really willing to accept lore that merely adds a bypass to similar concepts.. Plants could be adapted yet, having 'sort-of' direct control over them seems abit iffy to me.

Good luck for next time!
