((Lore is WIP and i would like comments and advice to improve this.))

Whispers of a curse long gone have long since plagued the lands of Athera, from tales of men hungering for flesh. To tales of woe from broken widows about husbands drained of blood or plagues spread by the cursed blood of this strange illness.

Some refer to this legend as the blood curse or the seven hemo-plagues of the seven nethers. However such legends have long since faded from the history books.

According to scholars of the past many who have been infected with this virulent curse have died or have become what is known as the accursed, not much is known about the accursed other then the fact that they slowly transform into abominable monstrosities of the curse as the thirst for blood and flesh grows.

Early studies have shown next to nothing about the curse but it has been found to have three stages. Each stage would tear the accursed's mind asunder and change their bodies into living embodiments of the curse itself.

Infection: The curse is only spread if the cursed blood makes it into the healthy host through absorption or ingestion of the blood. This can be done in many ways, from infected water to infected food or even simply killing someone who is infected and getting blood on yourself can infect you. This makes the curse very infectious if it is not dealt with properly and can even spread through blood transfusions.

The stages

Stage 1

The target will enter a comatose state upon being infected. A burning fever will turn their faces red as the blood inside of them is slowly corrupted by the curse. After three days they will awaken with a savage lust for blood or raw meat should they even survive the fever. Should they be denied of blood or meat they will start to change into stage two very slowly, additionally they become weak to light and will attempt to evade sun light due to it blinding them quickly. Much like the imp parasite the blood curse kicks the immune system and cells into overdrive causing rapid mutations and immunity to disease, this also grants them quick regeneration when out of the sun should they feed enough, however these regenerations cause tumours and wild mutations speeding up the descent into stage two of the curse.

Stage 2

During this stage the muscles and bones begin to change, the bones will develop spikes while the muscles will only grow in mass. At this point the curse is fully visible and the man will look more like a mutated ghoul then a living person. Bones will stick out of the body acting as spikes to impale victims with and the increased muscle mass would make them much stronger then before. However such a transformation will cause immense pain and hunger, causing them to be severely weak if they do not feast on others. Such power also comes at a price as the infected will lose control of themselves as they become a mere vessel for the curse to command.

Stage 3

The final known stage of this ailment will turn the accursed into a savage hound-like monstrosity. The bone structure will turn into that of a savage four legged creature with claws replacing the fingers and initial hands of the accursed. Additionally they lose all vestiges of their minds and become purely savage in this stage with only a single thought in the mind...the urge to feed. At this point they no longer look human at all and the only known method of killing them is with holy magic, fire, beheading, or destruction of the heart or vital organs. The wild mutations they will suffer from may cause them to descend into a further yet extremely rare stage known as stage four.

Stage 4

At this point the accursed will become a hive mind for the other accursed allowing him to command the others as a full embodiment of the curse. The wild mutations suffered from stage three may cause them to develop the ability to secrete infectious and corrosive substances that shatter environments and allow the construction of colonies under the ground for them to protect themselves during day light. The stage four accursed serve much like queens in a bee hive. They control the stage two and three accursed, allowing them to use them as drones to bring them food. Additionally a stage four infected cannot go into the sun light without being set on fire by it. Additionally, it is at this point that the curse has taken away all immunity to holy magic and fire making their flesh combust and then burn away if touched by it.

Speculation of The Possibility of The Curse on Athera

It is unkown whether or not a hive of ancient accursed lived on Athera during the fall of the forgotten dwarves. Ancient reports from the forgotten dwarves of athera recall sightings of strange creatures in the night and the sudden disappearance of most of the dwarven survivors of the great seal in the halls of urguan, most surprisingly this took place shortly after the events that occured there when all the dwarves were confined in its halls. Perhaps the ghastly apparitions mentioned in the old tomes were not that of the seal...further investigation must be done however.

Additionally, it is unknown if the accursed are even alive, they may die and be reborn after the fever, for all we know they may not even be whom they think they are after being infected but just the curse itself making itself at home by simply pretending to be them. Essentially those that are in stage two do not even have a soul due to a complete lack of emotion and the singular urge to feed slowly descending unto them. It is under my theory that those that become infected pass on immediately after entering stage one, initially once this happens the curse must decide if it wants the body or not as well, so it would make sense that the mind would remain intact while the body itself is actually a vegetable after death and a animal once brought back.

We must also consider the fact that the accursed hate the sun and would rather live under ground, if this is true and the halls of urguan were sealed shut after the events there we must accept the fact that they might have infected the forgotten dwarves after the souls were ripped out of them by the seal. Additionally it is possible that the dwarves that survived became infected one by one and entered hibernation shortly after. For all we know the halls of urguan could have several lairs within it hidden in plain sight.

Speculation of Whom the Curse Serves

It is unknown whether or not this curse is semi-natural like the imp parasite or magical in nature due to the rarity of it. For all we know this ailment could have been created by a deity of some sort or a lost species that fell victim to it. It is highly doubtable that this curse is natural and the accursed seem to serve a hive mind of some sort. We do not know whom or what this hive mind is or what its goals are but it clearly seeks to devour all the life force it can get and twist it into its own will. It clearly serves a purpose or a master, however whom this is is unknown but this hive mind has been known to make deals with daemons and even aid them if they seek to destroy life, this may have been what caused many of the quakes in aegis and even some of the fleshy corruption seen in the Orcish deserts of old.

((Note: This means that the curse actually kills you when you enter the fever stage and just keeps you in a vegetable state until it decides whether or not it wants your body. That means, your not you or who you think you are, refer to the movie the thing and how it mimics the hosts emotions and body to make itself seem rather innocent. Additionally if this lore and idea is generally accepted a event would have to be done in the halls of Urguan after the dwarves dug too deep into the earth and "Released" the curse from hibernation if it is indeed sleeping there.))

Now, I'm all for diseases, but this one seems particularly brutal and odd. Why is it needed?

That depends, why are you needed? Or why is magic needed? Or why is any disease really needed? We could have a stale RP server with nothing going on but we make lore like this that according to you is not needed.

i love bloodborne

Bloodborne sucks.

So glorified cannibals?

Maybe yes, maybe no.

Honestly while this is obviously well thought and written out, No. 1 How many people are going to actually do this unless you put it in mc mechanics, No. 2 How are you going to link this to RP outside like, zombies? undead? what? and No. 3 Like DiscoLiquid said this is pretty brutal, tone it down a notch?

Other than that nice idea i'll bump it.

Infection will work like any other disease, if you consent to infection you will be infected.

If you don't consent you won't get infected. If you get sprayed with blood you can die from the fever and be revived by the monks or you can RP becoming a stage one. As to MC mechanics, we can have staff create a sub race for this and give them bonus attack damage for extreme hunger or just have them choose the uruk race for this type of RP and combat situations, the undead have already been doing this. For RP outside we will have hostile wolves spawn time to time and mindless spiders that will attack you will spawn occasionally. As to this being brutal, i know it may seem like it but it is mean't to be brutal. This disease is mean't to turn someone into a vessel for the curse and make them part of a hive of accursed it is mean't to be very brutal so you can detach yourself from your loved ones and turn rapidly.

This is also why you can PK yourself at any given stage due to the harshness of the curse.

Ah but you can choose to die or be reborn through the curse.
