Enchanting; An Introductory To Runechant

As greatly requested I am composing a guide to how to begin your way on what is widely considered the most difficult of skills due to it's lack of intuitive design. This guide will be your complete location for both people looking to begin leveling as well as even a place for those experienced with the skill to discover new things about the way it works.

1. Introduction

 

Welcome to the guide on

 

 

 

This will assume that at this time you have no understanding of anything regarding this skill and are new to the server.

 

Here on Lord of the Craft we have taken a different approach to the standard form of Enchanting found in Minecraft. The bookshelves and levels approach Mojang implemented, while quite enjoyable for single player and multiplayer survival games didn't quite fit with the theme we abide by here on LotC.

 

We use an alternative method to do enchanting called runechant. Runechant was authored by one of the widely regarded best developers the server has had, Arche/Spoadic/zxpepijnxz/Awe and nearly completely overhauls the enchanting experience. We'll begin by showing you how to set up your very own enchantery.

 

2. Your First Enchanting Table

 

You'll locate the recipe to create an enchanting table within the masonry table crafting station.

 

 

 

A tall order! Enchanting, along with Brewing, are considered high-end professions. What does this mean? A High-End profession is a profession that requires you in order to begin to gain something from another profession. To begin enchanting, you'll need to find someone who is a proficient stonemason or gain the levels yourself!

 

Finally, when you're finished you'll have yourself a nice enchantment table.

 

 

Wonderful news! Let's put this down and get into it.

 

 

3. Welcome to Runechant

 

Go ahead and interact with the table with a right-click and you will notice the differences between standard vanilla enchanting and Runechant very quickly.

 

 

This can be scary at first, but don't worry! We'll make it simple.

 

Runechant works off of the idea of making symbols, or runes, to create an enchantment. These "Runes" are very free form and can take on a variety of shapes. It will be up to you to discover these patterns but we'll get you started with a few basic ones to get you going into the world of enchanting.

 

Now, before you begin you'll need several things.

 

1. A supply of lapis, Iron Ingots, Gold Ingots, emeralds, or diamonds.

 

 

These will be what you use to make the pattern. The better the material the more benefits you'll get when you complete your shape. Do note that some of the higher materials will need you to progress further in the skill to do such.

 

2. a tool, weapon, or piece of armor to enchant.

 

Can't really enchant your fist, can you?

 

3. (Recommended) 15 bookshelves around your enchantment table. These will, later, increase the chance of a higher level item and give you a better chance for success

 

These can be in any pattern but will still affect your enchantments! This hasn't changed from the original vanilla mechanics. Here's a suggestion!

 

 

This is my personal favorite set up, feel free to use it!

 

4. Getting into runes

 

Essentially creating runes will be a process of experimentation. It will take some creative part on your own to find all the possibilities but here's a few tips and things to note.

 

1. Only one at a time.

 

You'll make shapes with only 1 of an item at a time. You don't need to make big massive shapes with stacks of diamonds, just 1 will do.

 

2. The more slots you use to make your "shape" the higher skill level will be needed if your glyph(shape) is successful.

 

For example;

 

 

Will require much lower of a level than say

 

 

3. It doesn't matter where you put your shape

 

 

will give you the same result as

 

 

With these things in mind let's begin the process of how to find glyphs that work and ones that dont.

 

5. Exploration

 

Let's begin to explore for a glyph to use. We're going to try a simple shape, a square, and we're going to try to enchant a stone shovel.

 

 

Now that we have the shape we want to try inside of the table let's attempt to enchant our shovel.

 

Close out of the inventory and take the item into your hand.

 

 

Now hold down your sneak key and proceed to right click on the table while holding sneak.

 

 

Oh! Whoops. Our skill level isn't high enough yet to do a glyph of that size. We'll need to try smaller ones first to see if we can find something.

 

Let's try this one.

 

 

An L. A basic shape, let's see if this shape works out.

 

Close out of the inventory and repeat the above actions.

 

 

Uh-oh. If you did the shape I did, you'll notice some effects and this purple message will tell you "That's not quite right!"

 

There's also a chance when you don't manage to find an enchant you'll use up some of your materials.

 

 

As you can see, there is a little bit of depth to this. You might find a rune but it won't be able to go onto your item. You'll also need to search through possible shapes to try to find one that works.

 

We'll discover a new glyph in the next section together.

 

6. Your first enchant.

 

After a while of exploring you might find yourself a working glyph. I will provide you one in order to show you what will occur when this happens.

 

 

A simplistic pattern. Our explorations have led us here, now let us try to enchant our shovel with this unknown enchantment.

 

 

 

Success! We have discovered a glyph! A short effect will play as you receive this message. Your item will be taken and will begin to become enchanted. Let's right click on the table and see what is occurring.

 

 

 

Tada. We've found the glyph for unbreaking. This is good! Now, it will say "Unbreaking X" but don't get your hopes up - that's just for the crafting. Once you claim the item you'll discover the real level of the enchantment. We'll do that now.

Let's talk about the different effects the material you use to make the shape have. Each material has three different "properties" that they affect when it comes to enchanting.

 

7. The materials

 

The different properties the materials affect are divided into three, Time, power, and stability.

 

1. Time

 

The material you use will affect how long it takes to finish the enchantment. Some materials will make the enchantment finish much quicker while others will take longer to finish their enchantment.

 

2. Power

 

Glyphs will have a "maximum" level you can reach. Some of the weaker glyphs will only be able to go to level 1 at their max, and some can go up to two or three (sometimes there are multiple glyphs for an enchantment, the weaker version with a max level of one or the stronger version with the max level of 2 or 3. Just because you found an enchant once doesn't mean you can't find a better, stronger version of that enchantment!). The material you use determines how close to the maximum level you can get.

 

3. Stability

 

This is one you haven't seen yet in these screenshots but there is a chance to fail an enchantment.

 

 

This can occur on even functional runes and is determined by the material you use, your skill level, and the item you're enchanting. Some materials will make the rune much less likely to fail in this manner.

 

Here's the list of what the strengths and weaknesses of each material are.

 

 

 

1. Iron

Mainly to be used to fill out a glyph, avoid using most of the time as it's not optimal.

 

Level requirement; none

 

This has slow time

 

Low power rate

 

No stability

 

 

2. Lapis

 

Level requirement; none

 

This has Fast time

 

Low power rate

 

Low stability

 

 

3. Gold

 

Level Requirement; Apprentice

 

This has a Moderate time

 

High power rate

 

Low stability

 

 

4. Emerald

 

Level Requirement; Adequate

 

This has a Moderate time

 

Moderate power rate

 

Moderate stability

 

 

5. Diamond

 

Level Requirement; Proficient

 

This has a Fast time

 

High power rate

 

High stability

As a side note, you have a higher chance of a better enchantment if you use golden tools.

 

8. Enchanted Books

 

It's possible to enchant books in order to save your enchantment so you don't have to worry about tools or armor or using the wrong item to discover new glyphs. We will do this now.

 

First, create a rune and grab a book.

 

 

Close the inventory and complete the process of enchanting but this time around with a book instead of our shovel.

 

 

And upon inspection,

 

 

We are enchanting a book.

 

 

To use this book's enchant all you have to do is put it into the table...

 

 

and then attempt to enchant our shovel with just the book inside of the table.

 

 

 

 

Because we enchanted the book earlier, which took time, this enchant is instant.

 

 

 

9. Combining Enchantments

 

 

Combining enchantments is rather simplistic. Essentially one can take and add an additional enchantment onto tools based on their level. Do note this is a high end perk and requires effort to reach.

 

Simply prepare a new glyph in your table like such;

 

 

and then take your tool (our unbreaking shovel for example) and perform an enchantment like earlier.

 

 

 

And done. This works on books as well.

 

10. Closing Remarks

 

This concludes the guide. There are a lot of enchantments out there and it will take some time to find them all. Keep looking enchanters, you never know what you might find.

Most skills have level 3 possible. I checked as I was doing this guide, it just requires a lot of luck. Well, most of the PvP oriented enchantments have a level 2 cap.

For enchanting levels (either/or) Masterful or Legendary to be able to put three enchants on one item.

 

We would also like to see the return of protection, as sharpness still clearly remains a widely used enchant. I have been told by a couple that this glyph exits, but I have also been told by two different admins that it in fact does not.

First point; They were lowered due to the mass request by the moderation team.

 

Second point; It was changed because of the fact that the original glyphs were mass-leaked and so pvp enchantments became too wide spread. PvP oriented glyphs were altered on map change. Most glyphs will be altered on map changes.
