Hello, I am working on my game which will be marketed and I wish to ask for your opinion on a subject.

Should you be able to kill a child?

I know it's a subject that means no question though due with the recent statistics games over the years have made killing children more and more taboo. Which is why I am asking this sadistic crowd if you'll like / not like children deaths?

ALSO! What do you prefer?

  1. Cinimatic Trailers (Blizzard)
  2. In game graphic Trailers (Dead Island)
  3. Gameplay trailer (Games)

If you can kill other stuff you should be able to kill children. Arbitrary limits on who you can/can't kill are dumb!

Thank you for your imput.

I've done some research and it seems that children dispite being in trailers and games you cannot kill, most notibally Skyrim. As I am making a game about the dead (Yes another zombie game) with very unique features I was wondering what would your take be killing a zombie child or an surviving child.

An example here would be at the last of us (spoilers), Ellie a child that you grew attached to but besides having one option (saving her) would you liked a multi-option of killing her for humanity or letting her live throwing away humanity?

You have to think of this example because humanity is already in ruin and chaos and what would a cure do. Hand out for free, priced or stolen to be sold in the mafia market for a dominant ruler. You have to think of consequences of actions as with everything else. Chaos or civilization.

The example with this as i'm trying to bring is, if you where connected to the child through the game or trailer (Dead Island 1 trailer, little girl), what struggles or emotions would you be going through? If it's a random child you have no affiliation to grow a sense of connection to as in the children in Skyrim to Ellie in 'the last of us'. Would you feel any different in a choice you had to make and would you be alright if you had this choice and not feel emotionally distraught, or no?

Imo you're overthinking it. If you are going to put children in the game, and you can kill non-children, then children should be killable in the exact same ways. That's all there really is to it. You should not mechanically treat children differently.

It's a PC game yes. Though unless you have a direct link to me personally then you are unable to help unless you wish to work on some concepts (storyboard, Floor-plans, ext) though i'll need your personal details other then from concept you'll be unable to help.

I am personally fine with being able to kill children in a game, yet most of society isn't, unfortunately. I believe in situations such as the one you referenced regarding The Last of Us (Great game by the way), are more acceptable to society. Though, go with what you want to do c: And I prefer cinematic trailers personally.

Watchlist, blacklist, no flight list, lots of lists, friendo. I was just implying that a controversial idea such as killing children could land you a spot on one of them government lists, but was meant as a joke!

Ah I see, though with the taboo media with showcasing games like this to provide realism. As seen in games such as. 'The last of us', 'Left 4 dead', 'Dead Island' to name a few. All zombie type games in modern era though something none of them feature is a child dying. You could watch the dead island trailer for their first game and see a child being bitten in the in game graphic trailer (for PC) though the game itself features none of it.

I have asked prior on what peoples thoughts are to the trailer of dead island and many responses where that it brought a sadness thought to them. Some parents said they wouldn't touch the game for fears that it might happy to their children themselves.

Among a teenage crowd it isn't that extreme but to a parent standpoint I see where a watchlist for it would come into concept.

Though it brings discussion to, children die in movies and other media outlets besides games (rare? uncommon?) though once in a game you feel more emmersive and brings on these types of tensions.

What would your thoughts be on the view of parents on a game where you can kill a child or other reasons?

You want an example of killing children?

Minecraft, the small zombies. If it's proper and fits then yes, but do it because it's required not just because you can.

I'll ******* behead a zombie child if I have to, or a kid carrying it. No fucks given.

I also really like cinematic trailers.

I've always found depicted violence towards children particularly gut-wrenching.

You get a no from me.

It's how you go about killing children in your game. If you're making a game where the child is a main protagonist and you use the death as a turning point in the plot or for a overly dramatic sad moment, then I would say you should be able to kill children.

But if it's just mindless with no real purpose, like how it would be in a game like Skyrim, I would say no. Simply because even though it breaks realism, in today's society mindlessly going on a rampage and killing children (even in a video game) is seen as horrible when compared to adults.

If you want to step away from Skyrim for a second and switch to something like a shoot 'em up, for example Call of Duty or Battlefield, imagine what it would be like if the characters were replaced with children. While it may seem like a humorous thought at first, it's actually quite dark. While child soldiers are a reality in this world, in virtual worlds we tend of avoid them. Simply because we want to limit the group that we offend because it is a dark subject to dive into.

So if you want to kill children, think about what purpose does killing this person serve and how many people will be offended.
