A Marriage of Two Crows

The snow travelled heavily upon windy sleighs, the rackety chapel shaking as God blew upon the land with mighty breath.

It was a solemn ceremony. Only a few living cossacks attended, the Great Sickness having taken many, and the war having sent the able men riding off towards the Vieran with fire and sword. The Hetman had returned to his seat of power for this ceremony, to complete this task prophesied for his life.

The Hetman and the betrothed stood rigid as two dead horses, her with a look of curiosity, with warmth and he with a look of boredness and uninterest. The preacher, clothed in dark robe and gilded cross, proclaimed the words in a voice that rose just above the howling winds. Her single kinsman sat amongst a collection of handmaidens and lesser cossack landlords.

The crisp words of the holy text made battle with the overwhelming whine of the wind and soon enough the service had completed. The awkward, tense feel of the air soon was thrown to the bottoms of glasses and the company made merry within  the fort of the Hetman. Bogdana Sarkozic and her husband Sveneld Ivanovich were wed in the Lord’s Year 1557. All made merry, but one lady of the Hetman’s old household. Her sour tone permeated from her seat, yet all seemed to ignore her. She looked with jealousy upon the new wife of her Hetman, yet the Hetmaness sat with little more innocence than a foal.

Soon enough, all were stretched out in lazy modes or had fled to rest comfortably before awaking in the morn. The Hetman and the Hetmaness spent their night together and then he was gone. Back to war, back to blood, with fire and sword he, in his Uncle’s words, would ensure that his wife’s world, and his future child’s world, were cleansed of all danger.

Archbishop’s Log, 1557, Theodosius’ Cold:

On this day, the pairing of Bogdana Sarkozic and Sveneld Ivanovich, overseen by the Archbishop Svatobor Ivanovich, Archbishop of all Krajia, of Carnatia, of Kaedrin, and of Lorraine, and Brelus, was solidified by pact of Word and Scripture. Let it be known that this Holy Union will not end until their deaths, until their judgement by Godan, or until the end of time. The former wife, called Melina Kovachev, has been set aside by the Hetman on grounds of being infertile and shall live the rest of her days as a lady of his court.

Everard II frowns from the High Heavens, standing aside his Papal brethren a top the clouds. "Bogdana Sarkozic? This truly must be a jest." he groans, outraged, and stirred from his peaceful afterlife.

"They pull down heaven and raise up a *****!" he echos, his spirit pure and unscarred in it's incandescent state. "Leave our bloodline their name! They live naught without it. They've given their souls for Carnatia, leave them their name. Woe upon my house, in life their honor, taken."

Monsignor Alec van Allen looks down from the seven skies in distress, "To put one wife aside for another due to infertility is disgraceful, sacred vows were made and such an issue should not break them." he declares.

"May the couple enjoy their holy marriage, may they consume it justly, may it be long, but not without hardships, and may live in it peacefully," John would murmur, hearing about the marriage.
