Country Selected: Republic of Ireland / Terrorist militia, the IRA

Nation Leader: Patrick O'Donnell

Demonstrate Understanding of Nation (Bio/Facts/Info):
After the infamous 'Brexit', which saw Northern Ireland voting by a majority to stay in the EU, many quenched nationalist flames within the RoI sparked up again, seeing this as a chance for the reunification of Ireland. A new political party gained power in 2017, the Irish Nationalist Party, whose leader - Patrick O'Donnell, vowed to "pursue the raw interests of the people of all of Ireland." The party is using it's EU membership as leverage for garnering support in Northern Ireland, though the party condemns any acts of violence and vows to seek unification through diplomatic means.

Meanwhile, more militant minds gather in hidden locations across the border to Northern Ireland. The infamous terrorist group, the IRA, has gained more popularity than it has seen since the Troubles. Word among the Irish people is that they're out for blood.

Country Selected: Vatican City

Nation Leader: Pope Sergius IV

Demonstrate Understanding of Nation (Bio/Facts/Info): Vatican City is a tiny landlocked nation located inside the city of Rome in Italy. It is the smallest nation in the world by both area and population, and its only purpose is to house the Pope. The tiny and unique economy of the Vatican City is sustained only by the sale of postage stamps and tourist mementos, fees for admission to museums, and the sale of publications. As the nation is surrounded by Italy, it is primarily defended by the Italian Armed Forces. However, the city hosts a small police force known as the Corps of Gendarmerie of Vatican City, consisting of roughly 130 members, and the Swiss Guard, a task force of Swiss mercenaries charged with defending the pope.

Country Selected:Syrian Arab Republic

Nation Leader: Ali Al Assad - a young man in his mid-twenties, educated in the West and with Western ideals.

Demonstrate Understanding of Nation (Bio/Facts/Info):Syria was an authoritarian dictatorship under the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party under the Assad dynasty, most recently Bashar al Assad. With many loyal or more pragmatic supporters among the minorities such as the Alawites, Assyrians and Arab Christians, as well as Syrian Nationalists, the regime was able to bring peace to the country after the destruction of ISIS through sheer military force (with Russian backing). With the death of the president in 2017, a power vacuum threatened to bring the country into yet another war, but the popular Rifaat Al Assad returned from exile, along with the other Assads in foreign nations to retake control. Rifaat also died of natural causes, and, after the country once again nearly fell into war, the previously obscure Ali Al Assad, a son of Rifaat, was proclaimed president by the army, who placed him in power. Thinking him a puppet to control, he soon proved them wrong, consolidating power within a matter of months . He is willing to compromise with the Kurds and give them independence, and has made torture illegal. He intends to build a nation based on the rule of law, similar to the traditional English Magna Carta and Bill of Rights, and slowly devolve power to the people as stability and wealth rebuilds. However, as it stands, he leads a war-torn and bitterly divided nation, and his attempts at reform are being met with sharp criticism - which could easily escalate to violence, rekindling the long and bloody war. However, most are willing to accept his rule out of a grudging desire for peace at any cost, even if it means accepting the legitimacy of Ali Al Assad. He will face many challenges and threats from Islamists, foreign powers and those who insist on the destruction of the Ba'ath Party and its decades-long oppression and poor treatment of the citizens, and it will be hard - rightfully so - for the government to regain the people's trust, yet this new Assad is more idealistic than they would initially think, far from the corrupt Arab dictator many expect.

Syria is a secular Arab Republic bordering Turkey, Iraq, the defacto Kurdish territories, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the Mediterranean Sea. Her capital is Damascus - a city mostly intact from the ravages of war, unlike its sister-city Aleppo, - and the western side remains for the most part in a tenable long-term situation. However, in centre of the country and the east, where government, ISIL, Jihadist and other rebel atrocities as well as unintentional collateral damage from these forces has caused untold damage, the situation is far from bright. For instance, Palmyra, a once prosperous town set near its ancient ruins, is now a ghost town, her famed sites smashed by terrorists. The Assyrian population has faced near-extermination from Islamists. Shias, Sunnis, Christians and others are bitterly divided. Religious tensions and sectarianism is high. Yet, so is Syrian Nationalism. As the nation has overcome her political and military crisis, many are keen to rebuild regardless of any religious conflict - we are all Syrian, they say, and now is the time for a new Syria. Whether it will come, or fall into yet more decades of war, is anyone's guess, but at least they have the right leader to make the former happen, despite his young age and inexperience.

Application

Country Selected:
Peru

Nation Leader: Pedro Pablo Kuczynski

Demonstrate Understanding of Nation (Bio/Facts/Info): With the rising tension, nay, the escalation to war with their Brazilian neighbours, Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (alliteration ftw) sees a chance for change within Peruvian society - a rise to power, and to glory. He stands to make a direct announcement to the world soon, concerning the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance - something that the nations of South America seem to have forgotten about. The treaty sees any act of aggression on a sovereign nation of the Americas as an act of aggression against all of them, prompting retaliation from the rest of the members. He wishes to - with UN approval - see Peru at the head of a large military operation in order to assist Argentina. But first, he has to convince the remaining countries of the Treaty to act, and entice former members to rejoin. He has to act fast however, as very soon Brazil could succumb to the UN's sanctions and change their mind.

Country Selected: Zimbabwe, now known as the Empire of Rhodes (Rhodesia)

Nation Leader: Field Marshall Ian Smith

Demonstrate Understanding of Nation (Bio/Facts/Info): As the Zimbabweans starved to death under the poor administration of Mugabe, the whites which had fled the country under his rule began to return. Having seen the abhorrent conditions faced by whites in South Africa, and witnessing the destruction of formerly great nations, many whites returned to the failing nation. Many who could trace their roots back to the former nation of Rhodesia returned to find links to their past, bringing with them the wealth earned from countries such as America and Australia. Many former residents of South Africa that fled from the persecution faced also returned to take advantage of the unstable government.

The whites gathered under a singular idea, and began to institute their ideal of a great nation under white direction, and to seek revenge for the wrongs of recent times by the likes of Mugabe and Nelson Mandela's forces during his insurgency. With this, they established a new government, and using their greater education and funds, began a relatively successful insurgence.

The Mugabe regime, which was already struggling with civil unrest as the starving black population rioted for food, was quickly dismantled by the well-led, well organised and better equipped white forces. Many blacks, forgetting the oppression of the apartheid and remembering the days when they ate well under white leadership, followed the whites. The revolution grew and by Christmas of 2016, had all but seized control of the nation.

A form of military totalitarianism ruled the state in a form similar to fascism, although the states of the nation were governed by a form of oligarchic council, of which only white people could be elected to. These councils would handle everything on a state level, and often would form tight-knit regiments of locals. The rapid take-over and efficient and often brutal enforcement of a stable government stopped following uprisings from taking place as blacks were relegated to second class citizens.

A year passed as the nation regained its footing, establishing itself properly and fixing any internal strife. Under the new, efficient lead of the new white leaders, modernisation took over, as more efficient farming techniques were employed. The formerly starving blacks now ate enough to fill their bellies, as the economy was reset with a new currency, the Rhodesian pound, the GDP based around agriculture but was being fed by a budding industrial power.

Seeking a sea connection, however, and wanting to test their new system of military, the new Rhodesia decided to build its empire, and launched an attack on the neighbouring Mozambique. Following three months of harsh fighting and popular underground support of the new power in the region, three Mozambique provinces were seized (Manica, Sofala, Inhambane). The newly established Empire of Rhodes established regional governments with Mozambique representation as an armistice was signed. Officially, the two countries are currently at war, as the Mozambique people are resettled to other parts of the nation in an attempt to stifle any unrest. Migration to the newly seized regions was encouraged.
