The Turkish "Coup"

I admire Turkey for being a republic founded on the basis of Secularism and seperation of religion and state. I'm not an expert on Turkish politics but most sources I read tend to make out Erdogan to be an islamist theist and a dictator. I don't discriminate against religion, I just think it has no part in the state. My hope is whoever runs Turkey stays true to Ataturk's vision of keeping it a secular republic.

I don't think this was actually a scripted conspiracy thing. From what I've read I understand that the generals and admirals of Turkey have always been rather powerful, but Sultan Erdogan has been chipping away their power for a while now. Like Zaebos said, this isn't Turkey's first coup! or attempted coup! History repeats itself, which is why it's important to learn about it (Even IF it contains some distasteful or horrific events and people).

Good thing you lot are safe though, ****'s gone nuts there I hear.

Any "democratic" or "morally superior" ground given to those organising the coup is easily dismissed by the sheer fact that they did it during a period of uncertainty and now the country they allegedly stood up for is deeper in the gutter, thanks to them.

It's like if someone did a pro-EU coup in Britain. It'd have moral base, it'd could be explained as having a democratic base, but it'd still be a kick in the nuts for their own country and their economy.

Take care Turks, and glad you lot are alright.

Scary personal opinions below;

Turkey's military really isn't comparable to anything we have in the western world. They are a secularist watchdog that has the rightful power to overthrow the democratically elected government if they turn from their secularist ways or get too big for their boots. Problem is, Erdogan is smart enough to know this will happen, and thus, this is why this botched coup d'etat has happened; he has turned the legacy of Atatürk (who originally forbade the military from political activities but allowed them to overturn the government if justified) against secularism by eroding the military's command structure (through nepotism and creating sympathetic cells) to the point where those who still champion secular ideals were forced to act, then were summarily condemned and removed. It, at the risk of sounding conspiratorial, is a carefully scripted action by Erdogan to eliminate any rival he has in continuing the Islamic conversion of Turkey - you can see this by the pinpoint removal of judges and officers that would take the side of secularists in Turkey.

Honestly, Erdogan is quite the political genius. Shame he's going to make Turkey the frontline of Islamic/secular warfare in the near future. I'm not telling you to believe me; this is merely what I believe to be happening right now.

I hope you all remain safe, but I doubt this is the end of Turkey's troubles for a long while.

This stuff is really unnerving, either side you take on it questions are asked of the system and government I guess. I see parallels with things I studied in my degree last year like African conflict and Revolutions. I suppose from what i''ve read here and if I take a middle ground between Russian media and western media (Russia Today and the BBC/Washington post). I don't have the full knowledge others may have but I reckon it's either one or an accumulation of these factors. (You all know the information)

1. It's a simple power grab attempt

2. It's a Reichstag fire created by Erdogan

3. In believing the system is under Erdogan's power they saw this as the only way to challenge him (historians of African conflict see this as a common occurrence, they see a coup as easier to gain power and to achieve their goals than to use the system their opponent controls or seems to control. Kind of mixes with 1. but covers other too)

4. The Status/ power of the military was threatened by Erdogan

No matter my observations hope you are all alright and things calm.

I agree and believe Erdogan is behind the whole Coup and literally went as planned so that he now has access to even greater power to go in the direction of becoming a Dictatorship. The supposed executors of the coup were "unknown" and not authorized by head of the military and they didn't really seem to mean it. If it would've been a real Coup attempt they would've shut down Internet, media and all that with what ever it took. They literally just stood there to make it look scary and bad. And now they're all replaced with more Erdogan minions.

Praise and glory be to You, O Allah.
Blessed be Your Name, exalted be Your Majesty and Glory.
There is no god but You.

I seek Allah's shelter from Satan, the condemned.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Universe,
the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful!
Master of the Day for Judgment!
You alone do we worship and You alone do we call on for help.
Guide us along the Straight Path,
The path of those whom You have favored,
Not the path of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray. Amen.
