On Mercs and Assassins

Hey guys, today in this topic I am going to be talking about Mercenaries and Assassins. Now, how many of you have called Assassins edgy or stupid? Im sure some of you have, but in truth, not everyone can assassinate someone on their own. In times like this setting people would employ, you guessed it, either Assassins or Mercenaries. Yet I haven't seen either employed at all, instead I've seen them called edgy and people make fun of them on their posts or threads because they may try to make an assassin guild or a mercenary guild, and it's just disappointing. Yes, militaries may use their own soldiers but citizens normally don't try and assassinate someone themselves, it takes careful planning and is very time-consuming. And to people with little to no experience with combat or don't have as much organization to perform an assassination. So Assassins are not as edgy or as stupid as you think, instead they are quite useful. As for mercenaries, how many times have you seen a mercenary group guard a place or actually do something? Not often, right? Remember, that sometimes there aren't enough guards to help protect your settlement, not to mention you can't just start your own guard for your settlement depending on how big it is. If it's a small hamlet or a small village it wouldn't be easy to start up your own guard-force, which is where Mercenaries come into play. How many of you have played Skyrim and gone to that sinkhole place in the small village in the Reach? Did you think they started their own guard-force? Nope, instead they hired some Mercenaries to protect them, the Mercs get money and the villagers get protection. And in Skyrim there was an Assassins' guild, instead of being called edgy and stupid and not fearing them at all the people were quite afraid of them and tended to hold back all insults on them because they didn't know who was one. So, before you call a Mercenary or an Assassin stupid and edgy just remember how the profession would affect people realistically in this time. Now before you say 'It's a game, it doesn't have to be realistic, there doesn't have to be Mercs or Assassins we can do that stuff on our own', well how much sense would it make for a farmer to make his own guard-force or have the skills of an assassin? Not much. So I end it here, I hope you have a merry christmas and a happy new year.

Personally I call assassins edgy because they are mostly new and most likely don't know rp combat as well as a professional roleplayer, and go around with their hoods and ninja knives to powergame you in a dark alleyway

I think sell sword and mercenary roleplay can be sparse at times but when a good company comes up thats more bent on the RP and not so focused on the PVP it can be really fun and a good environment, I used to run a few sellsword/mercenary guilds.

All in all though, do what you want to do and have fun, this is a roleplay server. Yeah people are going to be jerks, people take it overly seriously, but if you want to start a guild for sellswording or even something along the lines of quiet assassin rp, do it and do it right and have fun with it.

Mercenaries can be cool and they can work. Just don't try to be the cool, cigarette smoking, laid-back cowboy icy gary-stu that a lot of new players try to be. Be a realistic character part of a mercenary group that's actually worth being hired. Inherent difficulty with assassins is that no one wants to die an immediate death without warning and without any chance of resisting. (The way an assassin would like it, probably.) And that death doesn't matter much. Assassins would probably be a way bigger thing if death meant permakilling.

The way I view it is that for the most part, the only people that want to play mercenaries and assassins are new players. This leads to them all being deemed "Edgy"(Because the ones we see are). 'Assassins' have been played, just never straight up called assassins. The role is the same(Past rulers have died and PK'd by assassins, even)! For mercenaries, no one calls them edgy unless they're loners- which for the most part, anyone alone and doing mercenary jobs is edgy, but doesnt have to be. Your thoughts on the subject are not wrong, just you need to think it through more.

You may want to consider actually doing some historical research before you make bold claims like "assassins guilds aren't unrealistic."

Being an assassin is not a profession, especially not in a medieval setting. Anyone can be paid to murder someone, and generally the best assassin is someone who is already a trusted member of the court (assuming you're trying to assassinate a nobleman. If you're just trying to murder a peasant do it yourself because murder isn't assassination). Hitmen are not the normal type of assassin, and generally only work because in modern times we have guns which make the assassins' job much easier. Even so, assassinations are quite rare in modern times, and the assassin pretty much always gets caught.

>is still playing his 4 year old merc.

>still pretty edgy.

win all seriousness though I think what i want to say in this post has already been said by the people before me but yeah, the assassin profession would have a lot more weight into it besides the "yes im an assassin. yes the person came back after 30 mins" if death had more consequence. While merc rp on the other hand is struggling because apparently everyone , even a 10 year old child could fight hand to hand with a soldier in this server. People dont have a reason to hire mercs as much because 90 percent of the population could fight by themselves.
