A Dwarf’s Solitude

Atop the highest peak of the Evraal Mountains, hot embers crackled and hissed in the darkness from beneath the protruding mouth of a nearby cave, where within a campfire had been lit. Morning had not yet graced its eyes upon the world, while high in the night sky, great bolts of thunderous lightning lashed at the lands below, tearing at the fabrics of the world asunder. Hunched above the fire, a lone dwarf sat, locks of braided red hair hung low over his breastplate, a jet black axe leaned at his side. As his gaze met the light of the dancing flames, brief flashes of memory caught in the reflection of his chestnut eyes, the shapes and patterns it formed reminding him of the life he’d once known.

He was born in Kal’Anart in the year 1386, a mere beardling when the great hammers of the Uruk War Uzg had come crashing down from the northern badlands. Later, in a world far away, for what seemed like an age had passed, he had been a King of his people, stood tall and proud before the great armies of the dwarven realm, a warrior within his own right. There, at the Battle of Crow’s Field, he had witnessed the final charge of King Heinrik of the Carrion Vochna into the dwarven line, only to be brought down in a single volley of arrow fire. Whether it were for the sake of his honour or mere foolishness, the King of Men had fought bravely in his final hour.

Yet years had passed since that fateful day, the legacy of his reign a tale long forgotten to the lost annals of history’s course. War after war, blood and honour were not enough to stem the tide of woe his kin had been forced to endure. In his heart, he knew that this was not the end; there would surely be more fights to come in defending their hallowed halls from the enemies who sought its destruction from outside and within.

Years ago, he had set out on this path of his own, a journey into the unknown and yet one he had no certainty he would return from. He had chosen a spiritual life, making it his duty to pray to the gods for guidance of his kin. He had learned to live by his own means, hunting, foraging as it suited his purpose, living the life of a wanderer as his mountain dwarf ancestors had done centuries before, high in the peaks of their Aegisian holding of Kal’Domhain.

Alas, a time must come when a dwarf returns to the halls of his kin.

At long last, Wulfgar Grandaxe, son of Morgrim, son of Valen, was coming home.
