The Old and The Worn

Charlotte Marbrand had been living in her tiny fort for two fortnights now and had been pleased at how she had been able to tidy things up. The young girl had moved several old crates filled with rusted weapons, finding a decent axe to use for a weapon of her own. She'd been glad to find such a thing, as proven by the hack-marked log that was propped up against one of the fort's taller walls. Looking about, she realized she had grown to like her little fort, a place to call her own.

She had also finally met the leader of the port town that lay next door, a dwarf with a name akin to 'Gandalf'. She couldn't quite recall. He allowed her to lay claim to the fort and call it her home, so long as she didn't cause trouble. It's only temporary, She had thought, Until I can find my way home. She participated in some sort of naval training that the dwarf-lord held within his town, out-launching several dwarves on a runic cannon.

After a long day, she returned home around sunset to finish her project. Searching the fort, she had found several scraps of colored wool. Using her basic skills in sewing, as her mother had taught her, she began to make a quilt-like flag out of the worn cloth. Finally, she had finished it and climbed the old flag post to hang up her work. With a strong jerk, she'd yank down the green & black flag that had hung there before, belonging to some house she didn't know. Carefully, she tied her own flag to the post and climbed back down to observe her masterpiece.

Charlotte squinted up at it, realizing that perhaps she wasn't as good at sewing as she thought. However, it gave her a bit of pride, or at least as a young girl could have, to see her family's colors fly again after so long. In her life thus far, she had never seen such a sight.

"Death before Disgrace," She'd mutter to herself, stepping upon the banner she had pulled down & returning to cleaning her new home.
