Introduction & RP'ing with People with Physical Disabilities

Greetings! My name is PurpleSweetTart, my persona is Ry'lynn. I have been on the server for about three weeks. I would like to talk to you about my physical disability and how it affects how I have to adapt in order to help Ry'lynn come alive in Atlas.

I was born with spastic cerebral palsy. It affects all four of my limbs. I  use a power wheelchair for mobility. It's a cool one, not like those ones you see on TV, I promise! I can walk a little with special equipment but someone has  to help me. Now to my upper body...

My hand-eye coordination is severely impaired so I can't drive a car, play console games or do something that takes a lot of  manual dexterity, like cooking - my husband does that for me! This affects Ry'lynn because I only can type about 13 words per minute. I also have muscle fatigue. If I get tired from typing, I usually use my mouse to "click type" on an onscreen keyboard with special keyboard layouts specifically designed for LOtC RP. For example, Ry'lynn is aWood Elf who lives in Druid Grove so all of the Druids' names, places and some of her backstory is on one layout and commonly used verbs like, buy, sell, trade, kill, die, and raid and others are on another. Btw, that doesn't mean I am going to raid people, Ry'lynn usually uses it to ask if/when Druid Grove is being attacked. This makes my RP very slow. If you are RP'ing with me, please be patient  but don't shy away from interacting with Ry'lynn just because I do things slower than you can do them. In other words, please don't be that  person who excludes me from having fun...I have been excluded from enough areas of life already.  My spacial abilities are also impaired. This means that I can't do things like play chess or read maps or follow driving directions easily. I  can't actually explain why, cerebral palsy can mess you up in a variety of ways. This means that Ry'lynn spends a lot of time getting lost. She may ask for directions several times and you may have to explain the directions in different ways using compass directions or landmarks. I  have  Xaero's map mods but Ry'lynn still gets lost.

I also have a math learning disability. I have a hard time with money and can't tell whether this: 100,000 is ten thousand, one hundred thousand or a million. I think it's a hundred thousand, but  I  could be wrong. This is why I am never allowed  to  get a credit card. I'm a grown woman but you should see my husband and father's faces when I overdraw my account or bounce a check... it's not pretty. Ry'lynn may need help trading or shopping.

I am having a lot of fun on this server and have met some wonderful people here who are very understanding.

Despite these issues, I am  highly intelligent with a Bachelor's degree in communication and  held a job for three years before I was laid off. I am looking for work. Meanwhile, I enjoy making mixed media art, watching movies,  reading, writing, fishing and being an Auntie.

If you  meet  someone else in Atlas with a disability, please try to remember to be patient, and understanding. Living a meaningful life with a disability helps us reduce pain, stress and frustration which actually helps us live  longer. Everyone has come to Atlas for a different reason. I came  here because I was tired of the same old servers but I play every day to forget about the migraines and head pain I have that they don't know how to treat so I can have something to look forward to, forget about the fact that society would rather have disabled people sit home and  drool on  ourselves collecting checks and food stamps rather than work  and forget that I  spend more time in hospitals than I do at home.

I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me because this server is literally making my days so much better than they were a few months ago.I might not be healthy yet or have a job but I think I have created a good persona and I hope she has a fantastic future in Atlas!

Thanks for reading this, I hope I helped you  better understand my life and Ry'lynn's. Please  don't be afraid to ask questions about anything you've read or want to learn more about me. Ry'lynn is currently in The  Dominion visiting childhood friends, she  is looking for  work  and housing (until I get my third soulstone slot.)

I enjoyed your humour and appreciate the time it probably took for you to write this post.

A lot of respect to you- keep on fighting the good fight. I hope to run into Ry'lynn at some point; and convince her of why Ancestrals are so much better than Aspects.

I am very proud of you, Tart, for writing this.

I am in a discord server with this lovely woman and have first-hand witnessed her difficulties. It is a challenge for her and we need to understand that not everyone is able to rp as freely as us. Complaining about people being slow typers, bad emoters, etc, will drain their RP and may cause them to quit entirely.

She has found ways to make her RP easier, with the assistance of the loving community of LoTC, and I ask everyone else to do the same.

You got this, Sweettart!

I'm really proud of you for writing this Purple.

Roleplaying is something everybody should be able to enjoy and I hope the rest of the community will help you out.

I hope I'll get to drive you around on a llama again, since that was a lovely experience.

First of all....Welcome to LOTC! It's always nice to see new players joining the server.

Now to the next part: It takes a lot of courage to talk about your own disabilities and the problems tied to them. As such I am really happy to read this thread and hear your story, hear about your problems and that you don't back down, but instead continue to move onwards! You have my greatest respect for that and I hope to meet you IC soon!

Yes, that was insanely fun! I told my husband about it. He has no idea what it means because he's not  a gamer but I had to tell someone irl cause it was great!

Welcome to lotc. Don't think we'll end up roleplaying together since I'm not as active as I was, and rarely go to MG. That being said you seem chill. Anyone even thinks about bad talking you over your disabilities or anything I'll flame them for you.
