The Deeproads

The calm blue skies moved the clouds along across the horizon as several scouts stood on the border of Kaz’Ulrah. They were hiding in the trees, looking on as the Vanguard patrolled the inner valley. They could see the gathered High King and his Dwarves merrily enjoying their ale in the tavern, they could see the farmers working away under the grueling sun, and they could see the tradesmen returning from a long caravan route. It was a standard day in Kal’Tarak, and the scouts had seen enough. They knew what was to come.

New scouts this time, clad in the colors of Kaz’Ulrah ran along the road in the inner valley. Fear flashed through their eyes as arrows flew overhead and the screeching of the Dwarven army behind them pierced their ears. Their lungs pumped furiously, straining against the broken ribs that begged so dearly to pierce them. Their numbers, they decreased. Only one scout found his way back to Kal’Tarak, staggering into the merriment and revelry with only blood to show for.His cries of distress and the war horns that rumbled through the valley was all that the High King and his Marshal needed to hear.

The engines of war moved through the valley, a glazed look taking on the eyes of the Dwarves who made up the army. They could only hear the constant booming voice of their chanters, “Vilketa”.Behind them rode their Golden Commander, lazily following on his mule. Beside them were the great cages of exotic beasts, hissing or slapping at their cruel masters. Yet they marched on, knowing that it was all for their god, and their god only wanted the passion to return to her children. Their camps were pitched, and their cages set down. The siege had begun.

Screams of battle ripped through the air as the two armies clashed at the gates of the city. Steel against steel, and Dwarf against Dwarf. Lead by their High King and his marshal, the Vanguard stood strong against the mindless cultists. The battle raged, the defending Vanguard held strong under the watchful eye of the Grudgebeard. Even with the earth shaking slaps of the corrupted Oozes burst free form their cages, he had a plan. The temperature outside the city rose several thousand degrees, incinerating those who were unfortunate enough to be still outside. Swathes of enemy cultists were burned alive in the flames of Kaz’Ulrah, yet the tainted Oozes stood firm. Only the arrows of the Dwarves of Kaz’Ulrah could stand against them.

It was a chance, but only a small one. The chance to push forward and retake their once lush, and once vibrant valley. The horrors of war were soon apparent, however. The Aqueducts had been ravaged, and the farms had been trodden upon. The great big cages unleashed harpies that plagued the bright blue skies. Everywhere, everywhere there was an enemy. Never before had the Valley of Garrond seen such bloodshed. Yet, the vanguard saw that it should never see such again. Push after push, they resisted. They organized against the rush of the cultists and their chanters, “Vilketa” the only word that ever entered their ears as they covered themselves in the blood of their kin.

The source was clear, and it came from the entrance only a well trained eye could have found. The Northern entrance to the valley, high in the mountains was where this corrupted army strode out from. Trampled, bloody grass entertained the corpses that would soon fall to the Vanguard. The river was the key in the push. Its fast flowing water pushed away any cultists stupid enough to cross, and the Vanguard held them at bay. Harpies and their arrows flew overhead, and rogue golems fired their enchanted cogs, but none could overcome nature itself. Soon enough however, the inevitable came. The invaders were at their end, and could be pushed back up the mountain. As the Vanguard valiantly rushed up the mountain side, with the rising hope that it would all be over soon, their dreams were crushed. One by one the defending Dwarves of Kaz’Ulrah crested the mountain’s top and looked upon the war camp and covered the small valley entrance. Hundreds of elite warriors stood ready to charge, casters blessed by their god herself stood in the back, and cages filled with untold horrors were placed strategically around the Dwarves. Under the orders of the Grudgebeard, they built small palisades to help defend themselves, unaware that they were being gifted the time by the invaders themself.

The armies clashed once more as the great roars of the invaders shook the very mountains themselves. Blade against monster more often than blade, crimson red was the only color that was left. The paltry defenses that were, stood strong against the invaders. Every Dwarf present knew what was at stake, it was a passion against the hearth. The devastation of the thunder storm could not strike through the resistance of the fiercest warriors, almost if Dungrimm himself stood behind them.  Yet the battle only went one way, and the Golden Commander knew such. His retreat signaled such an end, and his once proud army stood still in the only way they could. As corpses.

Yet there was the Grudgebeard again, standing over a bloody Dwarf, a fresh map in hand. Reinvigorated with a direction, the Kaz’Ulrah machine of war halted in their path of defence to regear. They would prepare the first march towards the heart of the beast that threatened their land.

Their heavy strides took them through a crimson red field of bodies, their fallen kinsmen would wait for another day to see burial. The march was arduous, tiring the battle worn Dwarves, and it took them many a stone mile. Yet even the most exotic of fish the and heaviest of sand could not stop their drive. They knew their target, the X marks the spot. Their X, however, could not be more commonplace. An entrance to an ordinary mine, yet abandoned, and free of all miners. Almost too strange, and the trick was found. Their efforts could only result in a loud click that echoed throughout the shafts, and then the slide door opened

The Deeproads. All lands were filled with these bizarre subterranean tunnels, and the Dwarves who travelled them won themselves into the book of legends. Here, the Deeproads were the entrance to the annals of history, and the answer to the enemy that plagued them so. On they marched, into and past the unmined ores, past the wilting vines and vegetation. They could see the shadows shifting around them, drawing them further in and past the stacked weapons and armor that resembled those of the army they just faced. They felt it first, and then saw what would be their doom had they stayed. Their muscles became weak, breaths were pained. The minerals that dominated the cavern were the first line of defence in these deeproads, and from a quick glance, where the miners had found their end. Their traversal of the decayed bridge ushered them through quickly, but not before a few eyes flashed like the curse that all Dwarves knew, Greed. Their journey on would see them come to face a recent landslide and a rope ladder that led them out. The deeproads stretched on, and the expeditions had only just begun.
