Preamble

Spoiler

As of the 9th of Varstag the Earldom of Nordengrad is established in the northern hinterlands on the northern coast of the Lochmoors. The Earldom asserts its dominion over the farmlands in its immediate vicinity, the coastal fishing shoals of the lake, and the forests. These each to be used for the purpose of procuring foodstuffs and materials for the Nordengradic residents. The Earldom of Nordengrad is conceived with the intent of preserving highlander culture and autonomy for those scattered tribes and clans seeking a home in which to dwell safely.

Historical Context

Spoiler

The Earldom of Nordengrad is established under the authority of one Thoromir Edvardsson Ruric, second of his name. Claiming leadership of the scattered Rurikid clan and the diaspora Norlandic peoples he has united a number of them in an attempt to establish a safe home for them to go about their crafts and raise their children. The disastrous reign of the preceding number of monarchs, with the exception of the tenure of Jory Ruric. Repeated endorsement of cowardly banditry, a consistent attempt to alienate and weaken the faith coupled with a general incompetence is the source of the rot that brought the Red Realm low. In light of this the mistakes of the past cannot be repeated if there is to be any hope for the Norlandic peoples.

In addition to this the fragmentation of the Rurikid clan following the invasion and subsequent sacking of Ruriksgrad resulted in an unacceptable degree of heresy, heathenry and chaos arising amongst the children of the All Father. Whilst intolerable even in the normal sense, this grievous sin is exacerbated by these crimes of faithlessness being perpetuated by descendants of the Holy Herald of the All Father himself. Those who perverted the words of the Herald and turned their eyes from the Light of the All Father to the darkness of faithless ignorance must repent, or be given the Father’s mercy.

Laws of the Demesne

Spoiler

The history of the Norlandic peoples is fraught with the various feudal holdfasts and realms of the All father’s children fighting internally over vague and poorly understood legal codes. If the Norlandic peoples are to move away from the darkness and eternal warfare of their past progress must be made in ensuring the lawlessness of the past does not persist. No longer can heresy or rogue savagery be permitted by those sworn to the All Father’s light. Those professing lip service to the All Father merely to have their wanton savagery tolerated will no longer find recess within the All Father’s glory or any hall held by those that live in his light.

Article I, The Nordengradic Code: Concerning Citizenship

  • The Nordengradic citizen shall be defined as follows, “An individual of unblemished human or elven heritage born in the confines of a Norlandic realm to citizens of the realm. In addition the individual must be of the Red Faith.”. The liege of the domain may also grant citizenship, so long as the supplicant is of the faith.

    • Citizens of the realm are recognized of holding natural rights bestowed by the Father. Namely a citizen may.

      • Bear arms freely.

      • Enjoy clan or household membership

      • Own property

      • Conduct unhindered commerce

      • Worship at the Hearth without hindrance.

    • Citizens may also declare Feud with another citizen or clan so long as they obtain the sanction of the liege.

  • Non citizens may dwell within the realms but are privy to none of the rights above. Furthermore non citizens are forbidden from being recognized as clan members of owning property within the domain.

Article II, The Nordengradic Code: Concerning Deviance

  • Within the confines of the Nordengradic domain the following is prohibited

    • Unsanctioned gratuitous violence against any individual within the confines of the realm.

    • Theft from visitors, citizens or the Earldom proper.

    • Blasphemy, or Heresy against the All Father

Article III, The Nordengradic Code: Concerning Inheritance and Moots

  • The inheritance of the Nordengradic domain is recognized to be Primogeniture in nature. As such the eldest male descendant of the current liege shall ascend upon his expiration.

  • The only exception to the above is a declaration of Witanagemot, (also referred to herein as a Witan or a Moot). The Witan shall consist exclusively of the Norlandic Chieftains, Feudal lords and Hearth Keepers. Each of these individuals shall receive a single vote to cast upon the candidates present. Only these individuals may cast votes, citizens, visitors and associated Rurikid may not vote unless they are one of the above. Possession of multiple of the above titles, shall grant an individual multiple votes.

  • Any Rurikid male of the Red Faith may stand as a candidate for liegeship following the calling of the Witan. The Rurikid male must also be a citizen of the realm and dwelling within. Only those fulfilling the criteria above may submit their candidacy for the crown.

  • Every Rurikid male of the Red Faith may call a moot a singular time in their lifetime. The Rurikid male must also be a citizen of the realm and dwelling within.

  • If fifty one percent of the Witan is not present at the announced location at the appropriate date and time then the Witan is considered failed and the current monarch or heir remains unchanged. Furthermore the single moot opportunity is considered expended.

Article IV, The Nordengradic Code: Concerning Governance

  • Amendments to the charter must be made with the consent of a majority of the Witan.

  • Lords may govern their own holdfasts and the inheritance of the vassalized demesne as they see fit.

    • Vassals may resolve their conflicts via force so long as they receive the consent of the Earl.

    • No Vassal may declare war upon an external faction.

  • Sacred proclamations made by the Hearth Council from the authority of the High Hearth may not be contradicted by feudal authorities unless they intervene excessively upon secular governance.

  • The Earl is held as both a secular leader and a sacred leader due to his position as Feudal liege, and most authoritative descendant of the Herald. As such the Earl holds a seat on both the Witan and the Hearth Council.

  • Hearth Keepers may govern their Lodges however they see fit subject only to the authority of the High Keeper, the confines lodges are independent of Feudal authority. However this governance may be overridden by the  High Keeper and the Earl.

Faith of the Realm

Spoiler

The Earldom of Nordengrad is a domain established with the intent of protecting the Norlandic people's ability to practice and preserve their own faith free of foreign suppression. As such the Earldom enshrines a special authority and position for the clergy and faith within the confines of its domain. With this in mind the Keeper of the Nordengradic Hearth will be recognized as the Patriarch or High Keeper of the Red Faith. He will be charged with safeguarding the souls of those who have been saved, with spreading the All Father’s light to those who are blind, and with administering to the operations of the Red Faith. In this spirit he must oversee the recruitment, training and promotion of additional Red Priests and Hearth Keepers. Finally the erection and consecration of additional temples falls under his exclusive jurisdiction.

The Red Faith and its associated clergy must ensure that the faith remains healthy whilst tending to the theological matters of the day. The Faith is expected to make rulings from the Hearth concerning moral crises and complications. The secular powers of the realm must ensure that the people of the realm are well aware of what ‘does’ and what ‘does not’ violate the precepts and tenets of the All Father. This being done through consistent study and reflection upon the holy scriptures of the Father, then subsequently applying them to modern developments to ensure that the faithful do not stray from the light.

Hegemonic Structures

Spoiler

The Earldom of Nordengrad shall be structured as follows. The realm shall be governed by the Earl. Below the Earl shall stand the Chieftains, the Lords and the Keepers. These each respectively governing a clan, a Feudal hold-fast or a Hearth of the All Father. Each holding authority subservient only to the Earl and the All Father. Secular rulings concerning inter realm conflicts shall be governed at the jurisdiction of the Earl. With legal amendments and proclamations coming from the Throne.
