Money Can't Buy Happiness

Victoria Anne d’Arkent stood upon the balcony of her manor in the Orenian capital of Providence. The young woman peered downwards at the few passerbys on the isolated street. Resting her elbows upon the railing, the woman released a long exhale as she pondered her 27 years of a lonely life. From her adolescence onwards, the d’Arkent had only books, studies, work, and money to rely on. Though she was satisfied for some time with her artificial life, she could no longer bear the pain of isolation. As she stared off into the distance, Victoria’s life flashed before her eyes.

She recalled her joyous and contented youth in the Barony of Carrington, alongside her mother, father, and four siblings. Though she often squabbled with her brother and sisters, as any child would, she missed their company. She even missed the companionship of her murderous elder sister, Emma Elaine, though she could never admit this to others, or even herself. She missed her estranged father who abandoned Victoria and her siblings, following his wife’s death. Most of all, she missed her mother, Mary Lucille, whom she lost at a very young age. She missed her embrace and her unconditional love for all her children.

Victoria recalled her short time upon the Archipelago, where she established the very first d’Arkent Deals, the soon-to-be successful enterprise which would soon define her accomplishments. She remembered her journey in growing her business into what it would become. She recalled her tireless hours of work and her yearning for money. In retrospect, she realized that her pursuit of money held her back from establishing meaningful relationships with others.

Victoria turned around, peering inside her extravagant and large home. For the first time in her life, she asked herself, “what was it all for?” For years, she had hoped to occupy her home with children, whom she would love and care for, as her mother did to her children. Instead, her home was empty, inhabited only by herself.

With a shaky breath, Victoria knew what she had to do. Reaching for her notepad from her bag and the pen she always kept behind her ear, she began to scribble out a note in her messy writing. Victoria carefully tore the sheet of paper from the notepad, and tucked the notepad and pen into her satchel, which she let fall by her heels.

Clutching tightly onto the note, she turned to face the edge of the balcony. With tears falling rapidly down her cheeks, Victoria climbed over the railing. Her gray orbs peered down to the paved street below as her breath quickened. “I’m sorry to all those I disappointed,” she whispered to herself, before allowing herself to plummet to the ground below.

The note read…

By the time this note is read, I shall have already been dead. I sincerely apologize to all whom I disappointed. I hope that we may be reunited one day. As for my money, I ask that it is all donated to the Princess Helen Antonia Public Library in pursuit of the education of Oren’s youth. As for my business, d’Arkent Deals, it shall die with me.

OOC:

Spoiler

I've had a blast playing Victoria Anne, and I'd like to sincerely thank everyone who's roleplayed with me. As much as I would have loved for her story to last longer, some OOC drama has unfortunately barred me from such. Nevertheless, I don't regret a moment of my time playing her. Thank you @libertyybelle for allowing me the incredibly opportunity of playing Mary Lucille's daughter!

"The woman died... hmmm... she seemed nice, shall she now rest with the rest of her dead kin." Alyssa Seregon said with a cold tone while taking a sip of tea, then the Seregon made a sigh, simply going back to their studies of water evocation within the safety of their home.

The specter watched in the shadows, since her own death, having kept a keen eye on her siblings. Wisps of her hair flew past her eyes as the specter read the note solemnly.

She had been the first, though never thinking Victoria would come second. It pained her in a certain undesirable way.

She remembered the last conversation that had occurred with Victoria. How when the specter whispered there mother’s name on the list of many she had killed, and the look in Victoria’s eyes.

How unfair the specter had been during her breathing existence. Wallowing quietly in her lonesome hell.

Beryl Edmund Carrington, Court Inventor for Augustine and Enterprise Liaison of Providence would skim his eyes over the letter, handed to him by a Carrington-d'Arkent Courier in a fine three-piece suit, his eyes grew dim and cold as he read over the letter, recalling the first time he'd played with Victoria Anne d'Arkent in the streets of Helena, him watching the first d'Arkent Deals be established, and him and her briefly going into business on the pathways of Providence, he'd pace up and down his office all evening, and upon dinner being served in the palace, a plate of food was left cold for the Carrington, he'd not be seen for a few hours after that, before walking to Charles Augustus d'Arkents quarters and offering a few words.

"I'm truly sorry Charles, I'd no idea she was so unhappy. It must be simply heart-breaking for you."

He'd pause, walking off, making a single remark

"Perhaps she did find peace without riches after all."

Beryl would muse, offering a dry chuckle to himself as he walked the palace halls.

A pale-looking lady's eyes widened, her hands grasping onto a nearby table for support. Her lips curled downwards into a pained frown. In her mind, that lady recalled the childhood squabbles she and the d'Arkent had. How both of them wanted to become scientists! Ironic, isn't it? How neither of them fulfilled their childhood dream...

After a few moments of shock and solemn pondering, the woman shook her head. There was no time to dwell on such things...! Right..?

She steadied her posture and went on with her day - but even then, the disgraced Selm couldn't help but to spend time mourning her now-lost niece.
