On the Supremacy of Humility

and a pathway to Faith

by Acolyte Randir

Under the tutorship of Ivan Cardinal of Lotharia

And you shall give your fellows the abundance of the spirit, which is My Word. For the abundance of the spirit is never divided, but multiplied.

Canticle of Charity, verse 8 to 9, Scroll of Virtue.

Introduction to Virtues

In His infinite mercy and wisdom, the Lord’s first words to His dearest creation, through the Exalted Horen, were not of a past history before we existed, nor was it a cientifical study detailing the creation of life and how He made it happen. Instead, it was a warning to those that He created:

Lo and attend, for I am the Lord GOD, and I am in the foremost part of heaven. Though the spring flower withers and the fruit of the tree falls to the ground, My Word lasts into the eve of the world, and the fruit of virtue cannot rot. I am the Lord GOD without peer.” (Virtue 1:1-3).

This introduction serves to, amongst many other reasons, solidify two primordial compreehensions of our connection to Him, which we seek to follow through Canonism.

The first is that He is the LORD, Creator of all and second to none, as is defined by Him proclaiming that “I am in the foremost part of heaven” and “I am the Lord GOD without peer”, with those statements He provides us with the knowledge to understand that He is above all else, and with the fact that He sits at the top of heaven, He is the only path to salvation. As well as demonstrates that He, solely, is to be worshipped and loved.

The second is how weak and fragile our material existence is compared to His will, as is grasped from “Though the spring flower withers and the fruit of the tree falls to the ground, My Word lasts into the eve of the world, and the fruit of virtue cannot rot”, with this He provides us with the knowledge to understand that our physical parts, with all the known mundus, are perishable, and only His gift to us, that is Virtue, lasts forever, for it comes from Him, who is eternal. So, in following Him by living virtuously, we are able to live forever by His side in heaven.

Before continuing, I must take a moment to explain that, though He granted us the gift of Virtue, which other beings lack, that does not make us divine. It is necessary to understand that, instead, it only makes us less mundane. That separation is important to avert any possibility of elevating ourselves to a status we do not possess or are able to possess, that is being the Creator. We are creation, and any possibility of ascending to a superior status, though maintaining our nature, is only possible through Him.

The understanding of these concepts is so crucial to worshipping Him that those three verses are repeated throughout all books of the Scroll of Virtue, which we will analyze now.

Understanding Virtues

The Scroll of Virtue has a simple, yet fundamental importance to the faithful, it teaches us how to tune our actions, and life, to the Lord. It is quite easy to comprehend it, if you live by the Virtues, that were granted to us by Him, we will fulfill the Lord’s plans for us, and consequently will be rewarded with the eternal afterlife by His side, otherwise, if you deviate from Him, you are going to feel His wrath and will be punished accordingly.

There are seven books contained in the first Scroll, which are the Canticle of Faith, the Cantincle of Charity, the Canticle of Temperance, the Canticle of Diligence, the Canticle of Patience, the Canticle of Fidelity and the Canticle of Humility. At first, there is no supposed hierarchy between them, all are supposed to be equally followed, which remains true. God, through the Exalted Horen, told us that, to be able to fulfill His plan to us, it is necessary to be faithful to His Word and holy works, to be charitable in worldly possessions, to be temperate in pleasures and actions, to be diligent in His, through us, works, to be patient to His will, to have faith in Him and to be humble in life. Those are the undisputed characteristics one must have to be granted eternity besides Him in heaven, as He showed us.

Supremacy of Humility

All of those Virtues are required for a devout lifestyle, but one has a higher degree than the others, and that is HUMILITY, for the reasons I’ll explain forth.

We are created beings, consequently the Lord created us. As creation, we lack certain attributes that only the Creator possesses, therefore we are not perfect. Understanding that we are imperfect and accepting that our nature is of mistakes and "lackness" (as opposed to sufficient) is the core idea of the Virtue of Humility. With that, to be able to understand the importance of living by His will, one must be humble first, because only then one can notice that the imperfection that we have cannot be filled by ourselves, it is necessary His intervention.

In summary, we are created and we are imperfect because of it, our imperfections can only be corrected through Him. Knowing that, He showed us how to accomplish that, and He did so by showing the First Exalted the Virtues necessary to fulfill the plan He prepared for us. And from that we can comprehend how the Virtue of Humility takes precedent above all else, not by being subjectively more important, but by being the root of all other Virtues.

Going back to the aforementioned Virtues, important it is to demonstrate, logically, how Humility is the basis of all others.

  • to be faithful to His Word and holy works” and “to have faith in Him” requires a humbleness to understand that He completes our frail existence that we, alone, cannot do. While “to be humble” does not, necessarily, require faith;

  • to be charitable in worldly possessions” requires a humbleness to understand that material possessions are decayable and that only His will is eternal. While “to be humble” does not require, necessarily, charity;

  • to be temperate in their pleasures and actions” requires humbleness to understand that indulging our vices does not complete our imperfections. While “to be humble” does not require, necessarily, temperance;

  • to be diligent in His, through us, works” requires humbleness to understand that He who has created us wishes our love, so we are to demonstrate it to Him by doing His will. While “to be humble” does not require, necessarily, diligence;

  • to be patient to His will” requires a humbleness to understand that we understand nothing, and that He provides for us when He knows it best. While “to be humble” does not require, necessarily, patience.

How the Lord’s worst enemy helps us

Furthermore, the importance of Humility is made extremely clear when we understand the Lord's worst enemy, Iblees. The Scroll of Gospel, sent from the Lord to Exalted Godfrey, teaches us that:

But among all the Daemons, the chiefest was Iblees, and he was very proud to reign over his kind. And he doubted GOD’s strength, for it was given to the Daemons to rule what is not. And Iblees desired to rule without the Lord.” (Gospel 1:14-16)

And Iblees replied ‘For you name us as servants, and I shall devise of no virtue until I am your equal. And now my touch is the touch of the Void, and it is with all things in your creation.’ And GOD was furious, but Iblees would not repent. And he fled into the Void, for he hated the glory of GOD, and by his own will was shackled there from the Lord.” (Gospel 1:23-26)

Those passages demonstrate clearly that what Iblees lacked most was Humility, in his envy of the Lord, he forgot he is as much creation as us and tried to challenge his Creator, who punished him justly.

So, may we all take notice of Iblees' actions and learn from his mistakes, for the Lord is not to be doubted, envied or hated, nor He is to be denied our repentance. Above all, learn from Iblees that our sins will be forgiven if we are to repent, He knows, better than anyone our weaknesses and He, in his infinite mercy, does not deny those who truly seek Him.

Conclusion

Be humble, that is the Lord's plan to us, deny no Virtue its existence in yourself because of Pride, the vice of Iblees, act no other way than with the knowledge that you are imperfect, and that only Him can complete our lives. Be humble, for it precedes all other Virtues, guiding them to the Lord. When in doubt, act humbly, because you understand you are creation and deposit your faith in Him, for He is the way. In Humility, we truly understand ourselves and our Faith in the Lord, for we accept what is, and deny what is not.

At times of strife and uncertainty, the Cardinal was glad to have such dedicated students to the cloth. Their determined pursuit for the knowledge of the Faith is what kept him going. "Perhaps our future generations shall continue the teachings of our LORD."

Estevot smiled reading this. Good to know there were people who actually read and studied the scrolls in the Order right now. From recent experiences, it seemed people really needed to refresh themselves.
