Kyre’kium
Metal of the Deep
“where the sun cannot reach, we find the soul of the deep”

EfmnjQw.jpeg

Across the realm and spread through continents, the oceans stretch endlessly, vast and unknowingly. From the shores descendants always watch the endless shimmer under the light of sun and moon - and the power of the waves as they crash against the sandy shore moving the world with its might. Stories of the depths always echo and groan of what lies below the surface in the dark where many have failed to venture. It is however known that where no man lingers is a dark, lawless domain, where predatory sea creatures and ancient leviathans roam freely. These lands are only seen by that of the ancient Shuul who found domain in the depth of the waters.

Constantly for years were these ancient sea-folk at war with the very waves in which they resided- among one another and the beasts of the depths. The early Shuul began to scrape together rudimentary tools of bone and stone at the bottom of their home trench, but these tools could only take them so far. They would not scathe the hardy leather of the abyssal beasts nor mine away at the hardened sandstone and generational magma below the surface. It is now known that a great shaman of the Kth’Shuul decided to venture out to find his solution. . . for generations he was gone exploring the depths before one day a light could be seen reflecting in the dark; for he had returned and not with an empty hand. What he had found was  an Abyssal Ore hidden within the ocean’s deepest cracks - one that would be the solution to their generational peril.

It came to religious beliefs that the abyssal ore had been sent to the Shuul from prayers to the Dweller himself, known as the master and creator of the Shuul species. A material sent so that they could cater to his whims; For there is no beast in the sea larger than the Dweller, as the Order preaches, and so it must be appeased.

Material Name and Description (Raw Form)

Though many are unlikely to ever lay eyes upon Kyre’kium in its raw form unless granted by the shuul, it had been described as haunting. Similarly to a lantern-fish the metal itself is pitch black though it possesses veins and streaks of a bioluminescent blue, glowing within the darkness. The raw metal can only be found within the hadal zone or hadalpelagic zone of oceans reaching depths from around 6,000 meters to the ocean floor.  Since the ore is only found in the deepest trenches of the ocean, the ore is as heavy as the pressure of the deep, almost impossible to extract without the most precise methods requiring special equiptment.

In its unrefined form Kyre’kium is exceptionally dense, almost unnaturally heavy for its size due to the conditions in which the metal is found. While still in this form the metal nearly impervious to crushing or warping under external forces unable to be easily destroyed, thus the same raw veins can be harvested for many many years before the Shuul must move on. Given the ores density in its raw form it is rendered fully useless - unable to be put to use until it goes through a refining method to turn it from a raw ore to refined metal.

Harvesting Method

Since the ore is only found in the deepest trenches of the ocean, the ore is as heavy as the pressure of the deep, almost impossible to extract without the most precise methods. Thus the shuul developed their own complex way of harvesting the metal which involves mining veins in the rock around the abyssal ore. Followed by alchemical means to plug these veins with warm gasses eventually displacing the ore -  to weaken and crack the surrounding rock without damaging the ore.

REDLINES:

  • Kyre’kium must be ST Signed
  • The Raw Material has no use beyond ‘rock’.
  • In the materials current state - the raw form cannot be found by descendants without the help of Shuul. Given the Shuuls religious belief in connection to the metal it is extremely rare for one to give it out unless bestowing the highest honor upon someone for assistance or protection.

Refinement

Given the shuuls civilizations residing underwater where fire cannot be sustained, the refining method for this ore is extremely unique having been granted the name Cryo-Tempering. The shuul having created a forging mething of their own and places of refinement called Cryo-Forges—specialized forges located near natural deep-sea cold spots, such as the edges of glacial trenches or near icy ocean currents that flow from the polar regions.

This process must be done over a bucket or mold to catch refined droplets. The raw metal only melts in temperatures of cold reaching below 30°F. Once reaching these cold temperatures, the raw ore is then combined with a mixture of concentrated salts. During this phase, the extreme cold causes the metal’s impurities to crystallize and separate, effectively "freezing out" imperfections that cannot survive at such low temperatures. Finally, the metal - given its more dense than water is able to sink down into a mold and harden once brought back to tempature. This metal is unable to be fully melted a second time once refined, however can be reshaped using the method below.

At this stage, the Kyre’kium is partially refined but still needs to be shaped into usable forms. During the forging process the metal is placed on an anvil within these cold temperatures and similarly to hot forging; exposure to the cold creates a malleability in the metal making one able to hammer away and create its shape.

 Kyre’kium (Refined Form)

Refined Kyre’kium glimmers with a deep black hue having vibrant azure and silvery veins upon its surface. Its surface is smooth and extremely reflective, thus under sunlight it always seems to have a light glow despite its dark color. Refined Kyre’kium holds immense significance within the culture of the Shuul, and because of that- not many possess or know of its methods to be harvested or refined. Should one possess this knowledge, or the metal themselves it typically grants the wielder respect among the sea--folk. They know those seeking to learn this refinement method must immerse themselves in the ancient customs of the Shuul.

Refined Kyre’kium is exceptionally effective against sea beasts and other fish-folk. The metal's origin allows it to slice through water with the same ease that a Ferrum blade slices through air. This quality makes the weapon feel lighter and more responsive underwater. However the trade off is that upon land one would find it heavier than ferrum making it harder to swing and wield (as if swinging a Ferrum blade through the water). The refined metal is akin to the strength of Ferrum and extremely hydro-phobic. No substance can adhere to it, making it impervious to stains or alchemical treatments. Blood, oil, or any other liquid simply rolls off the surface, leaving the weapon clean.

The most useful and perhaps unique property of the metal is that because its melting temperature is at such cold depths, refined Kyre’kium is immune to the effects of fire and extreme heat. The metal rather becomes malleable and easier to break under cold temperatures of any kind. Frost Witches and cold-based creatures possess a notable advantage over this metal, exploiting its weakness to shatter or reshape it.

REDLINES:

  • Refined Kyre’kium must be ST Signed
  • This refinement method is not known publicly, considered sacred to the Shuul one would need to learn their ways to be granted the refining method - or learn from another who knows it.
    • A Thanium forge could be used to refine Kyre’kium on land
  • Refined Kyre’kium is extremely effective against beasts of the sea, as well as slashes and slices through water as a Ferrum blade would through air. This is granted by the metal being hydro-phobic causing water to avoid its surface.
    • Upon land one would find it heavier than Ferrum making it harder to swing and wield (as if swinging a Ferrum blade through the water)
  • Refined  Kyre’kium does not rust.
  • Refined Kyre’kium on land is about the same weight as High Density Boomsteel
  • Kyre’kium could not be alchemically treated or stained by any means, as liquid does not adhere to its surface.
  • Fire does not have any effect on the metal - however extreme cold temperatures both underwater and on land will cause it to be malleable and easier to break.
    • This means Frost Witches and beasts or magic involving the cold would be strong against this metal, however fire will have no effect, unable to cause it to warp or melt.
  • Given that the metal is heavier - wearing full plate made from Kyre’kium would cause one's movements to be cut in half on land.

sort of following onto what kunuk’s saying interactions w dragonsflame should be listed as well as its feasibility for armor wear
