LADY PALATINE

THE PATH TO WIELDING THE GOLDEN BULAVA HAS BEEN A LONG ONE, an aspiration I have dreamt of attaining since I was old enough to comprehend the importance and power such a thing meant to the Haeseni people. Left often to my own devices in Castle Morteskvan, my time was spent reading the histories of those formidable Palatin who came before–men and women of great prowess in the matters of governance and true leadership. The Princes of Bihar, who stepped in at a moment of great doubt to guide our ancestors through the troubled end of the Ottonian era in Atlas. The fearsome Prince Otto Alimar, known as the ‘Muldav Menace’, who forged a path that eventually led to our independence from imperial rule. My own forefather, Maric var Ruthern, who proved his ability in service to a much-maligned king. And Lady Marcella Barclay and Duchess Isabel Baruch, the first and second women to wield the powers of this ancient office. So many, with both successes and failures, but none not worth learning from. It was their legacies that led me to seek out the ability to affect meaningful and effective change, as a younger daughter who might have otherwise been easily forgotten in the annals of our histories.

Under the watch of my grandsire, Duke Viktor var Ruthern, I saw how the art of diplomacy could forge bonds and alliances that would last generations. As a ward to King Ivan VIII, I learned how to be firm in my desires and seek the best outcomes for Haense in all matters. I have seen in my lifetime the destruction of my city, the first regnant queen of Hanseti-Ruska, the onslaught of darkspawn and demonic magi, and the turmoil wrought by corrupt counsel within the realms of humanity–among many other things. All these experiences, great and small, have guided me over the years, always influencing my view of our world and the sometimes-tumultuous difficulties we’re made to face.

The resignation of Lord Erik Kortrevich has been known to me for some time, an intention he shared with me in the saint’s weeks prior. He has served this kingdom ably since the days of King Ivan VIII and Queen Nataliya I, to the point of giving his own good health in service to his countrymen. Under his tenure, he has overseen the transition from the dual-reign to the rule of King Marius III. Afterward, he spent much of his time dedicated to his interests in amendments to the Haurul Caezk and outlining more specifically the duties of the Crown’s vassals. However, many know that I did not sing Lord Kortrevich’s praises and offered criticism of his performance often. Our relations upon the Aulic Council had always been formal and cordial, but I disapproved of his lack of presence and his narrowed area of interests to the detriment of other matters within our realm. Despite this, he proved his wisdom to me by admitting these faults in earnest. I am grateful for his faith placed in my abilities, seeing past our differences and respecting what I have done for our kingdom in my time as Lady Emissar. I wish him well in his retirement.

So, as I ascend to the seat of Lady Palatine and take up the golden bulava, I make a promise to the people of Hanseti-Ruska that change is coming. For years now, the Aulic Council has proven nothing more than an invisible body–leading the Highlands with little presence or greater impact than words on parchment. Our coffers could be swelled greatly still, our traditions of old restored to more prominence after being allowed to diminish amidst the war in the Midlands. The nobility, be they ancient or within their infancy, shall see greater presence and desire for involvement in the matters of state. But, put more simply, you shall once again have a figure of stability in your Palatine. A familiar face, even if not always warm, who is prepared to answer the needs of her people at a moment’s notice.

Thus, I leave you with a personal creed, something I often repeat when questioned about actions taken in the name of our kingdom:

ALL I DO, I DO FOR THE HAESENI PEOPLE. NONE SHALL COME BEFORE THEM.
